opinion on Wilton variable speed drill press

well i posted the auction but since i only have today to decide, thought i repost with a better subject heading. so here are the diff models available in this auction. would appreciate if anyone knows these models and can tell me if they are worthwhile. i am mostly interested in model 2010 due to low speed to allow metal work.

here is the link for auction. if you load their app you can search on drill press and quickly see all pics.

Re: Thinking of a combo machine #hammer #whatmachinetobuy

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I think I¡¯m leaning towards the saw-shaper combo as some have pointed out getting access from both sides. ?The machine width is similar but the B3 can stay against the wall. ?If it were to come out 3 feet to use the jointer planer on the C3, I¡¯d be interfering with anything along the opposite wall (currently where my miter saw is set up) ?I may have to break down the slider fence. ?Machine 3 feet off the wall would put me at about 8 feet from the saw blade to the opposite wall (14 foot dimension), I¡¯d have to move the miter saw to get to 8.

if I redo my miter saw station and raise it up a bit I could stash the A3 underneath it.?

Re: Thinking of a combo machine #hammer #whatmachinetobuy

Jonathan,

Correct, template routing does not need a power feeder. I should have stated that.

That totally depends on what you do. If you use the shaper for template
work with a guide bearing a PF does not help you. With proper jigs and
holding you can perfectly do without a power feeder provided you can
live with the feed rate fluctuations. Most of the time a little elbow
grease and some sandpaper will do away with them as well.

Well made jigs bring more to safety than a power feeder, unless you only
use the shaper for straight line profiling or tenoning only IMHO.

Kind regards,

Jonathan

Referring to James comment? re ¡°only using a router spindle¡± etc, I beg to differ

?

I have had my Felder gear for 15 years now, very happy traveler. I do have the router spindle and I have a Felder power feeder, still in the box unused

I use the moulder spindle all the time, edging, table top edge splaying, chamfering, but the use I love is template work

By this I mean curved, tapered legs, shaped chair rails- the list goes on

I can make a template at warp speed, cheaply( 18 mm mdf) with stock restraints made from hex headed teck screws biting thru cleats ?into a strong rear spine support( with cleats mostly canabalised off a previous set up) .Cleats have a strip of 60# paper glued to them for extra grip. Much stronger than those rubber tipped metal clamps you see. Driven into a eucalypt spine with a Hilti impact driver they are super quick and super stong with no rubber tip to flex and allow the cutter to dig in.

?

The template is created, band sawn, spokeshaved ,filed or drum sanded to what is required. It then forms the template to mark up the stock, which is bandsawn to about +2mm- so the moulder/shaper doesn¡¯t have meat to bite into. I use a Felder template following cutter, about 80x100mm, and a curved guard. Sold here as a Felder accessory/std item. I think it may be Aigner in origin, may be called a Bow Moulder?

?

I never use mouldings- doesn¡¯t seem the norm here- that would be different

?

I have a crude triple router base, two permanent for dovetails, one for simple roundovers etc. I only use the Felder router spindle when the bit is +60mm wide and wont fit my tables. Rare.

?

A crucial shaper tool- the 45 degree cutter. I f you use this with the shaper tilt you have a infinite choice of shallow splays for table tops

?

So it all depends on what you want to do in the end

?

Regarding the combo vs individuals, I have an AD741 and a KF700 ?moulder/saw and I find for a single? user this works well- I am regularly flicking from saw to planer to thicknesser . Mostly I can cope OK with the saw /moulder changeovers without too many bad words

?

Just my experiences, hope it offers another pov.

Sorry about mm, moulder, shaper, mouldings- Oz terms are different to other countries.

Re: AD 741 Belt Tension

Gary Copus

Thank you Colin.? I will look tomorrow and see what kind of mount. I am pretty sure it is the face mount you have
described. Now knowing the belt should not be overly tight, I may actually be in tolerance. Thanks.?

Re: AD 741 Belt Tension

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Gary, not sure if Felder has changed motor mount from face to foot mount, if it is still face mount then motor gets its movement up and down by way of slots cut into machine body once 4 retaining bolts loosened then free movement to adjust up and down is gained.

If you say motor has bottomed out, I would block under motor to stop it falling and then remove retaining plate completely and see if indeed there is no more adjustment in elongated holes in machine body. If it is bottomed out and you still can move belt with a finger say an inch lets say then you may have wrong belt or its over stretched and you will have to get new or right belt.

As for tightening belt I usually tighten until I can get about ? to ? inch movement with one finger in one direction, never overtighten.

I have attached belt tightening and belt replacement pages from my 2002 CF741 user manual, which doesn¡¯t give a value, just says do not overtighten and tighten till you get sufficient drive.

Hope this helps

Colin

Re: [felder-woodworking] Install gas spring assistance for the tilt-away bracket for KF700

Jeff,

I assume you are asking me.

Loosen the bolts circled and the lower nuts in the following pictures, That let the bracket lift up enough to attach the shock. Then tighten it back down. There is no need to compress the gas spring using your manpower.

After installing the gas spring, then install the power feeder.?

Thanks. I'm having trouble visualizing how to tie the spring down in a way that the string won't slip off and also won't block the top and bottom mounting holes.?

Marty,

Carl Knapp from Felder USA sent me the brilliant instruction and pictures below on how to install the gas strut, and I was done in 5 minutes!!! Felder tech from Mississauga asked me to try the ratchet strap, I simply cannot get it work.?

I do not have the F48 on the bracket. I know it would be very difficult and dangerous to have it on the bracket while installing the gas strut.

The gas strut made in Germany is rated at 1600N, no wonder I cannot push it down using my manpower :)

From Carl Knapp:??loosening the bolts circled and the lower nuts, That let the bracket lift up enough to attach the shock. Then I tighten it back down.?

James, I had the same problem when I installed mine. I can't remember exactly what I did. I seem to recall that I left the two bottom nuts that attach the bracket down low on the side of the machine off. Then you can tilt the bracket up enough to get the pin in. Then you have some leverage to push the bracket down and install those two nuts.?

It looks like you have the stock feeder already installed on the bracket. I would remove it until you get the strut pinned and the bracket installed correctly.

I wish I could remember exactly how I did it but you don't have a defective part as I had the same issue. Just ignore the funky Felder instructions and be creative. It is doable.
Brian's advice is sound also.?

Good luck, Marty

Back to March, I got the Felder gas spring assistance, but life gets in the way. Today, I finally have time to install it.

I have difficulty to attach the metal bracket to the head of the gas strut. See attached pictures.

I tilt the base, the gas strut is just a few millimeters longer, and I am not able to push down the gas strut using my manpower?to align the holes for the bolt connecting them together.

Any advice?

Thanks,
James

Do not sell your power feeder.?

I had trouble installing the tilt away bracket on my KF700sp after I bought it.?

Carl Knapp from Felder USA helped me out. Let me find the thread.

Re: AD 741 Belt Tension

The machine works just fine although? I have not ran very much material. The drive belt seems loose and I cannot tighten the belt anymore
as the motor is already bottomed out on the adjustment brackets.? When I run the thicknesser rotor speed at 12 mps the belt flops around a bit and seems very noisy. Could anyone tell me how to determine if the belt is tight enough? Just?
by feel or some other way?
Also, has anyone had problems with getting the thickness roller speed to 6 meters per minute?? I was not able to pull the lever out far enough
to engage in the right indent/slot.? I had a Felder Tech assist me in loosening one of the springs and now seems to work but still somewhat?
difficult to pull out far enough.?
