David,

This quote: "You can't overpay for the right machine.? I've spent a lot of money proving that point." , along with the one about specializing in boring repetitive tasks are the stuff of a follow on career in comedy (the niche may be a bit slim...).

Great article.? Lots of interesting articles on game theory and how to bid too.? The last one I read suggested not putting in your max bid as that site shows if it was a proxy increase or a bid. ??That sander is a 2004 build.? New it’s $29K.? I decided I’d rather buy used at up to $10K over a new but lesser machine.? I had been assuming I’d come across a Kundig Uniq and without the belt feed it’s a lot cheaper than the Unique S.? But this one showed up and amazingly my max was the winning number. It should get here for right at my max with tax.

FWIW, just got an email from CPO listing Bosch refurbished cross hair red laser for $49. i looked up the power spec and it is <1.5mW. i looked up a dewalt and it listed similar power.

so i am pretty sure all of these pen type lasers on ebay with listed power of 50mW, 100mW or 200mW is incorrect specification. maybe it is the power supply power as opposed to laser power consumption.

Thanks for the boom pic. I could not connect text to the previous pic. BTW, you found the same orientation best as I did. Locating laser on the saw guard made it faint 10ft away and really bright near blade. I ended up mounting midway along the length of slider on the wall. I do not see any power rating of laser on amazon, does the unit list wattage? From my experience, keep it within reach so it is easy to align and all should be fine.

David Davies - the Frame Press is a Soukup FP32.21 from Soukup America, contact through Greg Godbout at Rangate for inquiries - I received it earlier this year and I cant express the extent of"better" it has made for me since transitioning to a one man operation in the Covid era.

Imran - this photo should better illustrate the issue of needing a boom arm. I just rigged up a metal stud for concept and locating. Final fit would ideally be a tripod mount that can telescope and lock adjustments, but I bet I just find an old piece of scrap square tube or unistrut once I find it sitting in some dark corner of the shop lol.

Re: Screws

think the first q is what is the load carried by each screw.
load can be shear or tension, or a combination of those.
tension capacity of wood screw is typically based on length of thread engaged in the supporting member, typically x lbs per inch of thread.
shear capacity can be limited by the screw or the substrate, eg.,? ?soft woods?= lower shear? , steel plates = higher.

Once the shear and tension capacity for the screw?and the materials is defined, then if more than one fastener is required, a group is necessary.? then minimum spacing requirements?come into play,?and in case of bending moments, the load in fasteners farthest from the center of bending is highest..??

like so many things, not simple

another solution?is to mock up and test.

i hope i am remembering this correctly. wish i could find the source. obviously just a basic rule with many caveats.

I was looking for either.? This particular one has the feed built in but you can only work on one side.? The Kundig Uniq is two sided.? One side set for calibrated sanding, even sanding lacquer between coats.? The other side is like a regular edge sander.? If it was a Kundig I would have paid the same.

Love that book.? In 1970 when I was 8 years old my dad got that book from the Reader’s Digest book club and he used it to learn how to build kitchen cabinets.? As the oldest I was the shop help and the shop was an unheated poorly sealed 80 year old garage with a dirt floor in rural Iowa. We built the kitchen cabinets with a 1940s Craftsman table saw and did the profiling with a table saw molding head with steel cutters and the panel raising as a bevel cut with the saw.? All sanding was by hand.? Dad didn’t have much money.? The Ash came from a tree that he had sawn up.? He bought and old 24” Parks planer with a square cutterhead driven by a 24HP gas engine.?
?
I’ve given away several of those books over the years.? Great stuff

Hi Imran
Thanks for sharing that link the book looks really useful. One of my go to books for problem-solving is the Encyclopaedia of Furniture Making by Ernest Joyce, updated by Alan Peters. There is a chapter on carcass building that refers to the Design Manual for Cabinet Furniture published by Furniture Development Council. I suspect that this book was published a very long time ago and I’m not even sure that the so-called Furniture Council still exists. But it sounds like a really useful guide to the structural design of cabinets for stiffness and longevity. I tried to track it down but can’t find a trace of it has anybody heard of this book?
