news slider table recommendations
Hey everybody I was wondering if y’all could help me out with recommendations on a new slider. I am torn between what machine to get. ? I am 29 years old and simply a hobbyist who would like to upgrade to nice slider that I could have for a very long time (currently running a PM2200). I live below Washington DC and about 2 hours from felder in Delaware so I was able to look at some of the machines they have to offer. I originally was thinking about getting a K3 but then I got to play with the x-roll table and lets just say i wish I didn’t because now i feel like I want to step it up to the felder line. I just got done building a 30x40 garage which I use as my workshop so I don’t have a space issue. ? My first thought was “I want a slider that could straight line rip a 8’ sheet” which led me to a k500 with a bigger slider or the k500s but after being on the phone with my sales rep for an hour he basically made the recommendation towards the 500 professional since his justification was “if your not ripping 8’ sheets all the time I wouldn’t worry about it” he said their was a trimming shoe that I could buy to rip 8’ sheets on the occasion. Im not quite sure though how that works so im confused there. He quoted me that the package deal on the larger k3w was $5,900, the 500p was about $7000, and the 500s was about $9200. ? So my thought was if im gonna take the plunge and spend $5900 on a new saw then I could stomach another $1100 for the xroll but honestly the 500s seems out of reach for me. ? I also considered the KF500 and B3 comfort as options but im not sure If I want a stand alone shaper or deal with the conversion. The biggest turn off is flipping up a power feeder when I want it. Another issue I have with the felder shaper is the spindle size I have a huge collection of freeborn cutters I picked up on CL from someone for basically free but they are ?”. I did think about the option to mill a spare spindle down to ?”. Im currently looking at the laguna 5 hp shaper. ? All feedback and recommendations are welcome. |
Re: Wixey digital fence on K500 rip fence - feedback
In fact, it is related,
I started with the link on the forum for a K3, but I do have a K500 and was asking if anyone did the same on a K500 or can give more information about this K3 solution. I am very happy with all the information I received so far. In my case, and I repeat, in my case, I am more interested in the Fiama solution than the wixey's one because of the way I use use my rip fence. I believe the thread is great as many different solutions have been proposed and discussed with pros and cons. Bill |
Re: Wixey digital fence on K500 rip fence - feedback
开云体育Suppose I am not getting how a magnetic strip that sticks on the extrusion in a slot that is existing (on the k700 anyways) and then using the existing hole on top of the head of the rip fence which is also there for the sole purpose of feeding the wire of the read out, mounting the readout to the top of said head and making a simple L bracket (and I do mean simple) is anymore complicated than installing a dro with an encoder rail that requires you to mount the rail below the rip fence, maybe some pictures would help.Just not sure how an encoder rail system less complicated it has more parts, requires more installation hacks and is more constrained. I don’t know maybe i am not reading all this correctly. Also you can use an encoder rail on the xcut, i did 20+ years ago with my accurate technology dro On an scm slider. You just mount it on the face of the extrusion, however you then cannot use the fence in the other position which I never do anyways. Much to messy for me know but at the time it was what I had and only interested in making money building which is futile but i digress... Regards, Mark |
Re: Wixey digital fence on K500 rip fence - feedback
I know there are other solutions to the DRO besides the Wixey but before everyone starts to look at big money and complication let me say that over 6 years of use the simple system that Wixey is has been 100% reliable in that time and I have never had it not work due to dust and debris. Sure an all in one solution that fits in the current fence would be nice and from memory without going to check the mag strip housing in the K series fence is 12mm wide on my saw. I already had the Wixey from my old cabinet saw so I used that and have never regretted it. If I ws to put a different system by the time I imported it and had it on the saw it would be the thick end of 1000AUD so that won't happen any time in the near future.??
All that applies to the CC fence at the infeed end of the slider and not on the outrigger on the K3 and not a Felder saw which is where this discussion seems to be going. The CC fence on the K3 outrigger offers no other feasible options than a mag strip and believe me I have been up and down and all around on this problem and as has someone else I know and the mag strip is it end of story. Sure it couId be done but it won't? be pretty or very user friendly so the idea got the flick. have also looked at fitting a Felder fence to my K3 but not seriously though that option may become available for me in the not too distant future and if so I will then take a long hard look at the whole thing to see if it is possible.? I have just measured the fence extrusion on my K3 and the rip fence tape is 19mm wide and the CC fence is 12mm.? |
Re: Wixey digital fence on K500 rip fence - feedback
开云体育Well, I know that European machines definitely get specc’ed with a smaller fence, but at least some of the machines are coming to the USA with the larger fence… I know it can be done, was told this by Felder sales directly.

Re: Wixey digital fence on K500 rip fence - feedback
Strange,
I measured my cross cut fence when you came up with your solution last year or a couple of months ago and I was sure mine did not fit the measurements on your web site. Will measure again, we never know, I might have been drunk with too much water drinking, or Felder changed their K500 fence this past year, mine is now one year old since delivery, or you were told a beautiful story :). Re: Wixey digital fence on K500 rip fence - feedback
开云体育Not really, at least I don’t see any real discounts. I think you would have to be up in the 20+ units (all the same) to even start to see a small discount.

Re: Wixey digital fence on K500 rip fence - feedback
开云体育Imran, the guy that gave me the info said that pricing was a discounted rate for FOG members. Might be worth checking directly with him as there are show discounts as well and pricing he gave me for 3 units was less than oneRegards, Mark |

开云体育Thanks Brian. From your experience if we did a group buy of Fiama parts would there be some discount? Imran On Jun 16, 2020, at 7:01 PM, Brian Lamb <blamb11@...> wrote:
?No, crosscut fence only... you guys can make your own rip fence situation, there just isn’t enough money in it to inventory $400 worth of Fiama stuff to sell a $50 bracket (if I could even charge that much).

Re: Wixey digital fence on K500 rip fence - feedback
开云体育Brian, You mean the DRO you use on the xcut fence will work on the 500/700 rip fence or are you offering A kit/product for rip fences? Imran On Jun 16, 2020, at 4:14 PM, Brian Lamb <blamb11@...> wrote:

Re: Wixey digital fence on K500 rip fence - feedback
开云体育Bill, Watch this if you have not. I am not sure how close your rip fence is to K700 but should give you a good idea of what is involved. Imran On Jun 16, 2020, at 12:27 PM, Bill James via groups.io <xxrb2010@...> wrote:
?Thanks a lot, I believe I got it. With the fiama unit you just have to replace the measure scale on the rip guide with the magnetic strip from Fiama and find a way to attach their sensor on the rip fence housing with a L bracket as Brian mentioned. I will contact the local Fiama distributor/seller and see what I will get. I know that Brian has a DRO retrofit for K700 outrigger fence (large extrusion), does anyone know of some fiama units that can work the for a K500 outrigger (small extrusion) as a DRO? Bill |

Re: Wixey digital fence on K500 rip fence - feedback
开云体育The mag strip versions are much less sensitive to mounting and alignment issues. With the Felder machines already having extrusions that accept the magnetic strips, it would be smart to go that way. If it wasn’t so easy to use the Fiama units on the rip fence, we would offer the kit… but it’s a simple L-bracket and easily done by the user.
