Doing a soak of evapo rust can also help, but you will need the scotchbrite treatment to clean the black residue. It is safe but takes some time and works better when warm.

I have done the same method as Aaron mentioned however for heavier staining I use BarKeepers Friend instead of WD40. BKF was recommended here.
I taped the vac hose outlet on the ROS shut to minimize any liquid pickup. If you do not remove all of the BKF it will stain cast iron yellow (happened to me despite best efforts) however a subsequent application of BKF removed the yellow stain.

?I have had a lot of results using green Scotchbrite pad mounted on a random orbit sander AT LOW SPEED with WD40 as a lubricant (you can use high speed if you want WD40 spraying everywhere, lol).? Don't press down hard or you will scratch the cast iron.? Just let the Scotchbrite/WD40 do the work.
