Re: 16" 4 knife cutter block

Dave,?
Thanks for the idea, I hadn't considered it as an option.

It is a very early machine running the twin Z section vee belts rather than the J9 Poly-vee belts so my options to change the cutter head pulley may be limited.
Changing the motor pulley is likely to be an expensive piece of engineering work.

I am looking at converting it to a variable feed set up as the machine wasn't originally fitted with it so may be able to solve the issue that way.

I have to finish the other two machines before i can start the planner so there is plenty of time for research.

Regards

Paul

If you don't find a head, consider swapping a pulley to speed up the two knife some.? People run 4 knife heads with blanks on only two knives, often with carbide so changes are few.? Two knife heads were very common with rpms in the 6000 range in Euro machines.? Dave

I know I am probably better off going searching for either a unicorn or the loch ness monster but nothing ventured is nothing gained.

If anyone has gone down the road of fitting a spiral head to a 16"? 6 or 7 series planner or combo and has the original 4 knife cutter head lurking on a shelf somewhere,
then I would be interested in a sensible discussion about purchasing this from you.

I finally found a cheap (relative term given its condition (but not beyond saving)) 16" planner in the UK and while I have it stripped down to every last nut and bolt,
I?am minded to add changing out the 2 knife cutter head to the long list of things that I am going to do to it.

Yes, I have considered going down the spiral head route until I worked out the actual cost of the Shelix or Sheartak head with the shipping, Value added tax and Import duty!!!
Unfortunately, that will have to remain a wish list upgrade.

Paul
