Fairlane History

Hi, I don't know If this is the right place to ask this question; I was wondering if someone could tell me some history on the 68-69 body style, like who was the main designer on the car, and who redesigned the Fairlane badge for 68-69? Thanks in advance.?

The switch/proportioning valve contact surface looked like the plastic switch had been over torque at some time in its life and that may be the reason it was loose when I remove it and why the light would go on when the switch was snugged up.? I put a 0.009" thick mylar washer in the switch/proportioning valve?contact?surface area and that kept the light from coming on when snugged up.? Hopefully, that is not just overriding a non-centered valve.

When I had the switch out, I did some ohm resistance testing to determine if the switch was working properly and get an idea of how it functions.? I found the pin in the switch is also the ground as well as the switch actuator.? When the pin is extended it is an open circuit.? Once the pin is pushed in far enough, the switch makes contact, and the circuit is completed to ground to activate the light.? What I don't understand is the basically zero resistance between terminals going to the wires of the switch.? I am not sure why that is unless it is a redundant feature in case one wire circuit fails. Then again, it could be part of the parking brake circuit to activate the light.

I will keep an eye on things to see if they function as they should.

I really don't want to take the valve apart but can do that as a last resort. That is probably something I will do if I have to remove the master cylinder for rebuild or replacement. I usually look up 69 Mustang for these parts. That what I did for mine. My car had 49000 original miles and I needed to take it apart the proportioning valve, ?and rebuilt it to fix mine. Get some flair nut sockets they work good in tight locations.?

Re: Centering proportioning valve

When I got my '68, I had the same problem. Now that is a drum brake car and it was 20+ years ago, so my memory may be off a bit.

From memory:

My mechanic said that used to happen all the time. When there is a brake problem, the sensor in the proportioning valve can get pushed so far to one side that it gets stuck and doesn't come back on it's own.

You can take the proportioning valve apart and recenter it by hand.

What he did was to slightly loosen the bleeder valve on one side and then stand on the brake pedal to force the proportioning valve mechanism to go to the side where the valve was open. He literally stood on the pedal, coming up off the seat. The problem is if you don't know which side it is stuck on.

When he found the right combination, there was a loud "bang" and the light went out. I haven't had a problem since. (Of course, I am assuming that the proportioning valve survived this and still works. <grin>)

Any brake issues must be fixed before doing this, or it will probably just recur.

Take this with however many grains of salt it deserves.

Although I am still in Florida for a few more days, i had a nice chat with David Hadley when he called to check on me. He had heard on the news that a twister was spotted near State College. He was unaware that we had moved from the State College area to Washington, PA in August.
It was disheartening to learn that he is suffering much back pain from a recent fall, so please add him to your prayer list.
