Re: '69 Fairlane sheet metal, again

I have some update pics of my project; in case anyone is interested. I have the inner rockers welded in and a damaged left A pillar replaced. I found out the guy that made the rocker parts, made them about 3/16" undersized on the side where the floors connect, so I have some creative sheet metal work to do on the floors. That's ok, because the floor pans are for a coupe and have to be massaged for a convertible anyway. After I get all the floor structure welded, and some additional brackets made, I can start on cowl repair and installing floors.

Hello Steve,

First I have to say that you are awefully ambitious to do that work wthout ?a 'spot welder' if that
means you don't have a 'welder' at all. If you just mean you don't have a dedicated spot welder,
then you don't need that. Pop some holes with a drill or punch in your new panel and then fill
them with a mig welder. That is how the majority of the world does it.

As for panel bonding, nope Nope NOPE.. Not this guy. ?The are great and they work wonderful
for some amount of time, but they were never designed to last long term. ?In 2010 a shop that
was fixing my F350 told me my one bed side was going to have to be replaced. I knew their reputation
and told them "Sure, do it at long as you weld it 100%" ?They welded the top edge and the front
edge but used panel bond everywhere else and I was not happy. Five years later the back of the?
panel started flapping in the wind while driving. ?I had to scrape it all out, clay it up, and the spot
weld while doing heat mitigation to save the paint. ?To years later the filler panel that goes?
between the bed and bed site, that the tailgate hangs on, let go and my tailgate fell and hung
from the cables. Damaged my bedsite and tailgate.

Just weld it. ?That is where I stand.

? I asked quite some time ago about inner rocker availability for a convertible, and thought I'd revisit the subject. I called several suppliers, and not only are they not making the inner rocker pieces, but have no plans to do so. I finally found someone locally that will reproduce the metal for me, but have to bring him the original pieces to use as templates. Well, most of it is gone, but I've finally got all three pieces on one side out and will drop them off tomorrow. I had to weld bracing on to one because it was just the outside edge, and broken apart in several places. The shop is going to duplicate one set, then do a mirror image for the other side.
? I have two questions. First, if my custom made repops work out, does anyone else need any? I can ask the shop if they want to do a limited run if there is interest. Second, since I don't own a spot welder, I was thinking of using one of the new structural adhesives for putting the new pieces back in. Has anyone had any experience with them, pro's/con's, and does anyone see any reason it wouldn't work as well as spot welding?
