Price Increase Coming on April 1 for Alaska Endurance Trail Run
Just a reminder: Prices go up a bit on April 1 (no foolin'!) for the 2025 Alaska Endurance Trail Run. If you're thinking about participating, prices will never be lower than right now! https://www.alaskaendurancetrailrun.org/registration/ If you're not going to run it (or even if you are!), would you consider taking a volunteer slot or two? Come out and support the amazing people who are pushing the limits of endurance. It's fun, exciting, and very rewarding! (And the overnight shifts are magical.) https://www.alaskaendurancetrailrun.org/volunteers/ Finally, we're starting to explore sponsorship opportunities. If you're interested, please contact me. Thank you! Don

Alaska Endurance Trail Run - June 6-7, 2025
Registration is open for the 2025 edition of the Alaska Endurance Trail Run - June 6 to 7, 2025. AETR is a 6-, 12-, and 24-hour timed race on the UAF West Ridge Trails. All the details are on the AETR website. Sign up soon, because the registration fees go up on April 1, and registration closes on Monday, 6/2/2025 at midnight. We'd love to have you run or walk any of the races, but if that won't happen this year would you consider volunteering? It takes a lot of people to put on a 24-hour race, and you get to be up close and personal with some incredible athletes from all over Alaska and North America. You can see all the possibilities on the Volunteer page. And even if you can't volunteer, make a note on your calendar to stop by during the weekend and cheer on the runners! It's amazing for them to get cheered at 2 in the morning. Or anytime! Thanks, everyone. The community support for the event is what makes it happen! Don don@...

Lake Ice Hazard Map for Fairbanks Area
Folks, I attended a very interesting Zoom session last week about a new online map of lake hazards in the greater Fairbanks area. This is an incredible resource that you can use to locate lakes and ponds that likely have unsafe conditions due to weakened ice due to trapped methane gas and open holes from methane seeps. And in many cases where they are likely to be on each lake. Take a look at the map: Go to Lake Ice Methane Monitoring Network webpage at UAF and click the blue Fairbanks area lake ice gas hazard map button, then drill down into the map. You might remember this article in the News-Miner in 2019 by Sam Friedman (behind a paywall, sorry), which was in part about Stan Justice's obsession :-) with lighting methane flares on lakes: Blowing (up) bubbles: The rich Alaska tradition of igniting methane gas for fun I had no idea that those bubbles could make lake travel unsafe. But now I know. And I want this map for the rest of Alaska! The webinar was lightly attended, but very interesting. They kindly let me share the link for the video: Lake Ice Hazard Map Briefing. They talked about the causes of all the methane and its effects and the development of the map. It's well worth a watch if you travel outside around Fairbanks. Be safe out there! Don

Last 1st Tuesday social fun hike of the season! October 1st 6:00 PM
3
When: Tuesday, October 1st, 6:30-8:30PM Where: Meet at the parking area at the base of the bluff. From Fairbanks head south on the Richardson, through North Pole and over the flood control bridge, just after crossing the railroad tracks look for a turn off to the left. The bluff is a large cliff with graffiti all over it. This moderate hike is about 2 hours and goes through forested areas over the bluff with some great views. Dog and kid friendly. There may be bugs, so bring your favorite Alaskan perfume. Parts of the trail can be muddy so plan foot wear accordingly.. The sun will be setting at about 7:15 this evening. Civil Twilight will last until about 8:15 but it still is a good idea to add a headlamp or flashlight to your pack. The weather forecast calls for partly cloudy and cooler weather, so we may get some awesome sunset views! John
