Lake Ice Hazard Map for Fairbanks Area

Folks,

I attended a very interesting Zoom session last week about a new online map of lake hazards in the greater Fairbanks area. This is an incredible resource that you can use to locate lakes and ponds that likely have unsafe conditions due to weakened ice due to trapped methane gas and open holes from methane seeps. And in many cases where they are likely to be on each lake.

Take a look at the map: Go to??at UAF and click the blue?Fairbanks area lake ice gas hazard map button,?then drill down into the map.

You might remember this article in the News-Miner in 2019 by Sam Friedman (behind a paywall, sorry), which was in part about Stan Justice's obsession :-) with lighting methane flares on lakes:?

I had no idea that those bubbles could make lake travel unsafe. But now I know. And I want this map for the rest of Alaska!

The webinar was lightly attended, but very interesting. They kindly let me share the link for the video: . They talked about the causes of all the methane and its effects and the development of the map. It's well worth a watch if you travel outside around?Fairbanks.

Be safe out there!
