I know it’s very late notice, but is anyone interested in walking around UAF to check out the trails tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6:30 pm. If they are wet, we may walk on a combination of sidewalks and bike paths. We will meet in the parking lot at West Valley High School near the running track. Plan about 1.5-2 hrs. Please RSVP. Alaska Endurance Trail Run - June 6-7, 2025
Registration is open for the 2025 edition of the Alaska Endurance Trail Run - June 6 to 7, 2025. AETR is a 6-, 12-, and 24-hour timed race on the UAF West Ridge Trails.
All the details are on the . Sign up soon, because the registration fees go up on April 1, and registration closes on Monday, 6/2/2025 at midnight. We'd love to have you run or walk any of the races, but if that won't happen this year would you consider volunteering? It takes a lot of people to put on a 24-hour race, and you get to be up close and personal with some incredible athletes from all over Alaska and North America. You can see all the possibilities on the . And even if you can't volunteer, make a note on your calendar to stop by during the weekend and cheer on the runners! Lake Ice Hazard Map for Fairbanks Area
Folks, I attended a very interesting Zoom session last week about a new online map of lake hazards in the greater Fairbanks area. This is an incredible resource that you can use to locate lakes and ponds that likely have unsafe conditions due to weakened ice due to trapped methane gas and open holes from methane seeps. And in many cases where they are likely to be on each lake. Take a look at the map: Go to??at UAF and click the blue?Fairbanks area lake ice gas hazard map button,?then drill down into the map. You might remember this article in the News-Miner in 2019 by Sam Friedman (behind a paywall, sorry), which was in part about Stan Justice's obsession :-) with lighting methane flares on lakes:? I had no idea that those bubbles could make lake travel unsafe. But now I know. And I want this map for the rest of Alaska! The webinar was lightly attended, but very interesting. They kindly let me share the link for the video: . They talked about the causes of all the methane and its effects and the development of the map.
