Ikebana: a virtual retreat 4 #facilitation
If you would like to start September fresh and connected with peers, exploring different territories of being a Present, Powerwise and Playful facilitator, I would love to welcome you to *Ikebana: a virtual retreat for advanced facilitators*. Ikebana is the Japanese modern art of arranging flowers, of harmonizing humanity and the (natural) world. A living art which changes and is informed by the culture and the times. I chose this term for the retreat because facilitation to be is like a search of balance between different elements, in and outside the room. A while ago I shared this article ( https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/coming-closer-together-thanks-distance-sara-huang-%E9%BB%83%E8%A9%A9%E6%83%A0-/ ) on the need for creating boundaries so spaces for more autonomy and freedom can become possible. This mash-up of concepts from the East and the West has pushed me even further me in creating a learning journey like this for the advanced facilitators. Please sign-up here: https://gggykvsx7te.typeform.com/to/PygboSrd With gratitude, Sara *Crafting transformative spaces online, on site and in between* www.bureautwist.nl/english ( http://www.bureautwist.nl/english )

call for participants: Timely Methods for Novel Times 11 February 2022 online event.
Timely methods for novel times! We need different times, but do we have the methods to unfold them? Human life and organization need to be fundamentally transformed to support more inclusive and sustainable worlds. This requires attention to a key foundation of shared life and agency: time and temporality. While rational, instrumental, and typically short-term agency is a taken-for-granted structure in late modern society, this has impeded an understanding of the complexity of ecosystems, of social change and of the inter-relations between individuals, people and their worlds. Changing temporal habits and orientations requires experimentation, reflection, collaboration, and methods for researching the complexity of time with and across collectives. Research on time and temporality abounds across a range of disciplines and sites. Alongside this thematic interest, is an interest in how we go about this research, with adaptations of traditional methods such as time use studies, mapping exercises and new approaches such as artistic research. The particular focus for this event is to bring together those interested in working with time in groups and communities, and explore processes and methods to collectively understand the pressures and possibilities of time. We invite you to join the Timely Methods for Novel Times workshop that will explore approaches to discussing, communicating and questioning time with others and ask the question ‘we need different times, but do we have the methods to unfold them?’ We invite you to join us to ask more questions and offer provocations. These could be along the lines of: How can we provide opportunities for groups, communities and individuals to reflect on their experiences of time, and the experiences of those around them? In a context of the climate crisis, what ways do we have to engage with human and non-human times? How do we initiate conversations that go beyond clock-time and worries of speed-up to talk about the complexities of everyday time? How can we create thicker relations with what is around us and go into deep nows? How do we engage in and with the complex networks of life in a world whose institutions work on the basis of linearity and efficiency? How do we bring these times into practice? How do we mediate across and with different pasts, presents and futures? This workshop will provide an opportunity for attendees to share their approaches, raise thorny problems, learn about cutting edge techniques, and connect with others interested in researching and/or practicing alternative orientations to time. All approaches to these questions are welcome! Workshop details Timely Methods for Novel Times will take place on Friday February 11, 2022 at 10.00am - 13.30pm Central European Time. This free online workshop will be facilitated by Improbable Theatre who use the Open Space format via the Qiqochat platform. We are supported by the Centre for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities, University of Bergen; the ERC funded CALENDARS project; and the Research Council of Norway funded Lifetimes project at the University of Oslo. Open Space is a dynamic and informal way for groups to think, talk and take action together. There are no limits to the number of participants, we can be 5 or 1000. This will be a relaxed and accessible event. Please make sure to let us know of any access requirements when registering to the event so we can ensure that we can support you to have a full experience. Feedback from people trainers? 3
Hello f4c community, Would any trainers- employee training, corporate training, sales training, any people training- or facilitators that work with trainers be willing to hop on a short call so I could pick your brain? We're recently in market with VoiceVoice, our new video platform for people training and community engagement without the need for a live trainer or host. It's showing early signs of traction within the training market but I'd love to get more feedback from more trainers on what we've built and how the training segment perceives the unique value proposition (scale your training efforts + host more training sessions across time zones and geographic regions without needing to hire more trainers). Let me know if anyone would be up to chat for 15-30 minutes and/or could you connect me with trainers you know. My email is julian@.... Many thanks in advance! -Julian Martinez Co-Founder @ VoiceVoice LinkedIn

Scary conversations! Our October Monthly Community Dialogue for Listening Beyond Division.
Our Halloween special edition of our monthly community call invites us to reflect on conversations that are scary to have. How can we interact with someone on the opposite side of a heated issue? How do we tell the truth in a difficult conversation? What are we thinking and feeling inside as the conversation gets heated? What strategies and shifts have we been able to make to keep a personal connection or to remember that it's not personal!? We believe this is a critical skill to learn these days for the health and sanity of our communities. Let's practice together. This event will be co-hosted in circle, storytelling format, by Diana Claire Douglas and Kara Stonehouse, core team members of the Spirit of Canada Dialogue Project. We can all share our journeys and inspirations in a 'brave space' of deep listening to the whole. The event is 2 hours long without a break, so take care of your body before the call! Attend on Thursday October 14th at this Zoom link https://zoom.us/j/94893565333/ 3:00pm EST - 5:00pm EST Save to your calendar Is there a difficult or taboo issue you wish we could have better dialogue on in Canada? Come join or even get brave enough to host a monthly community dialogue with us! Kara Stonehouse +33 (0)774 25 58 39 karastonehouse@...

Apps to turn chat into a Wordle/word wall 7
Hello! This may be an unrealistic request, but I am looking for an app that will allow us to convert responses in zoom in the chat box to a word wall or wordle - so in other words have the chat responses appear in larger type, in color etc. on the screen. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!! Catherine

Interactive Science Meeting-platforms or ideas? 12 #events
Hi All! I'm suddenly assisting an international group of scientists who hate Zoom to salvage a meeting they wanted to have in person. They will use Topia (spelling?) for presenting posters, so that will help. Any other ideas to help introverted scientists simulate an in-person conference? Of course, they don't want to be online any longer than necessary. I'm thinking if I could intrigue them with a cool platform or gadget, they might be willing to play! Thanks in advance. I've been on this list serve for a long while and I notice the emails about #events are from 2020. Maybe there a some new ideas now. Leilani

Organizational Learning in International NGOs/Non-profits working in Sustainability 5
Hello everyone, I am a Switzerland-based Certified Professional Facilitator who is in the midst of a PhD (Erasmus University, The Netherlands) that ultimately connects organizational learning (OL) and facilitation. I have written here before asking about published research into this topic for my literature review and you kindly shared some great resources on this site. Now, in addition to my facilitation work, I am working on my first PhD article which examines organizational learning practices in international NGOs/non-profits working on sustainable development issues (broadly speaking). I am trying to get a wide range of responses from organizations in different parts of the world. This is for the first of four academic articles, the third article is on the support that facilitators can provide to these organizations in their OL work. For data collection, I have launched an online survey that takes 10-15 minutes and would be happy to share it, with the cover note, to anyone here who has clients that fit this description (or if you are an internal facilitator in one of these). It is for both staff and Executive/Advisory Board members of these organizations. So if you are a Board member, I would be happy to hear from you too! If you would like to have a link to the survey to fill in or to share with organizations that you know, I would really appreciate that and be happy to send it. Those that piloted the survey said the found it interesting and short (all multiple choice and 3 short open answers). You can contact me here, or on my email: Gillian@... and I can send you the information or answer any questions. I don't have an extensive network of non-profits n North America and Canada, so any help would be much appreciated (and all other parts of the world most welcome!) with kind regards, Gillian Martin Mehers Bright Green Learning @ Atadore SARL

Rates? 20
Hi folks - I'm a long-time fan, first time contributor. Thanks for all the insights from more frequent contributors! I'm bidding to facilitate a board retreat for a local organization. While I've facilitated similar meetings, most of my facilitation practice has been in the context of an organizing or political campaign. Usually, I design and facilitate training or lead strategy and planning meetings related to a particular campaign. My experience bidding on stand-alone meetings is limited, so I'm having trouble figuring out a pricing structure. If anyone feels comfortable sharing your rate structure or system, I'd appreciate your insights. For folks who have something to say but prefer to remain anonymous on this particular question, drop your answer in this Google doc. Anything about hourly rates, full-project rates, etc. would be helpful. Mira WeinsteinOrganizingtowin.netmira@...

DOMINANCE - September's Listening Beyond Division
Hi Guys! I know a few of us are interested in these dialogues! Check it out! In a world that feels increasingly divided and isolating, how do we turn towards the complex, the difficult and the taboo? The Spirit of Canada Dialogue Project (SpoCan) holds a space once a month called ‘Listening Beyond Division’. We explore difficult topics with the aim of wiser dialogue and actions in Canada. We are curious about what breaks our hearts and what breaks us open to healing and to expanded possibilities as a complex nation of lands and peoples. This month Richard Schultz, Kara Stonehouse, Pamela Schreiner and Diana-Claire Douglas are hosting an exploration of Dominance as a broad pattern behind so many divisive conversations about race, vaccines, politics and personal relationships. Date: September 9th, 2021 (Join us the second Thursday of each month) Time: 3:00 - 5:00pm Eastern Standard Time Please Register: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/listening-beyond-division-dominance-tickets-167794037483 We look forward to exploring with you in our growing community of brave souls ready to lean into difficult topics with love to find more clarity and peace in our world. Tools for Doing Equity and Privilege Activities Online
We are doing some basic awareness level work with some staff, but due to the restrictions in our area we have to do this work online. Do to budget restrictions we have only two sessions and staff can select which date they would like to participate. 103 staff will participate in total, but we do not know how many will choose to be on each day. We would like to do some common face-to-face activities like the Privilege Walk (take a step forward if...) and are looking for some tools to do this with. I came across this, which works pretty well, except that the no answers get a red mark and the work "incorrect". Here are the types of tools I'm thinking of...and they need to be a) simple, b) easy for tech novices, c) not expensive, d) can manage 50+ people without difficulty, and e) not cumbersome when used in combination with Zoom (like multiple browser windows/tabs). - "leaderboard" type display that can be morphed to show more or less privilege - matrix display where information can be clustered under topics - marked by the participants - continuum display where people can adjust their marker in response to new questions (they need to be able to track their marker amongst 50+ people I know that Mural and the Zoom whiteboard can be used for some of these, but I am concerned about the numbers of participants managing their markers in those kinds of displays. I am very open to other ideas as well...what have you done to help large groups increase their awareness of privilege in online activities? Thanks!!

Workshop Break tool combo? countdown + YouTube + image 4
Help? I'm looking to up my game for a remote workshop break next week. I've been using BigTimer for the countdown and YouTube for music videos, and then using the Zoom option to share just a part of my screen, so they both show neatly in a frame. But now I need to add a little text - or, ideally, a pretty image of that text. Is there an elegant way to integrate all of these - countdown timer + YouTube video + image - where I can just set something up, click go, and then have it run, while also not having it monopolize most of one of my screens? I tried on Miro, but I can't find a big timer, and there seems to not be an option to embed an entire YouTube playlist, just one video, so I'd have to advance to each embedded video manually - not possible for my multi-tasking busy self. Current set-up attempt below - functional but challenging to set up correctly in the moment and anything but elegant. Thanks for sharing your brilliant hacks and tools! Emergent goal setting processes that push intersectional/new thinking 5
Hi all, from a mostly-lurker who has learned a lot from all of you! I'm working with a group on developing their high level goals. They have a mission and vision. What they know is that some of the goals will be similar to what they've done before, and some will be new and outside current expertise. There is also a desire by the board of the organization to break out of the old program "silos" and work in a more intersectional way. The process is going to be primarily staff driven with board input at intervals. It definitely needs to engage current staff (many of whom have narrow expertise that is not intersectional) and potentially some other external voices TBD. I would love to engage a large number of the staff in the process if possible, without taking up a ton of their time, though we could also have it be leadership driven. Even better if it can allow for asynchronous work for people in different time zones. I'm new to this (thus the lurking!). Does anyone have a place I can go to get started looking at methods for pushing the group to think in new ways about what new and more intersectional goals could be, in a liberating structures kind of way? I looked at Keith McCandless and Johannes Schartau's piece on Liberating Strategy which seems potentially relevant. What other methods am I missing? Thanks for any thoughts or good questions or anything else... with appreciation.
