Wiring for trailer
#electrical
I have a1999 EVC and am attempting to wire the harness for towing a trailer. I have it all connected to the passenger side rear tail light wires, following the color coded wires from the wiring diagram in the manual. It is connected to the house battery in the rear right compartment by the right rear tail light. My problem is that do not get 12 volts at the 4 pin connector that connects to the trailer.?
Any help would be appreciated.? Ian Bullock |
开云体育You really should get a trailer light converter. The problem with wiring the trailer lights to the van lights directly is that now you have doubled the current draw from the flasher. The flasher rate will then slow down considerably. Look up a trailer light converter on Amazon or Autozone. I have mine stuffed behind the rear reflector- much easier and quicker.

They draw so little current compared to tungsten lights that the flasher doesn't notice the difference, so the flashing rate is the same. Lee Hart -- Knowledge is better than belief. David,? ? ? ? Thanks - I actually found this post and printed your file (trailer wiring) - I followed it pretty much exactly?- did have one question though. You say about the 7 pin connector? that you used all the connections. on pin 3 and pin 4 (left turn tail and turn - you say "via 5-pin". Does that mean you connected to the wires on the 5 -pin or did you still connect on the 7 - pin? Thanks in advance Ian On Sat, Aug 27, 2022 at 7:30 PM David <dsh1705@...> wrote: I don't have an answer for you, but the wiring breakout I have on my post might be helpful in your troubleshooting:? |
Any way - I have connected to the 5-pin for the left side but I am still getting nothing when connected to the trailer.? I had a similar issue back when I owned a 1985 Vanagon Westy. It was just weird. I finally ripped everything apart and discovered no less than 3 (three!) different trailer wire attachments had been made in the life of the van - using those crappy "splice" connectors which try to cut through the insulation but not the underlying wire.

If you aren't the first owner, I would recommend you pull both tail lights and go over them carefully to look for prior attempts which may be confusing things. On Aug 25, 2022, at 6:02 AM, ianrbullock@... wrote: |
So should I not be connecting to the 7 pin that plugs into the tail light at all? Ian On Sun, Aug 28, 2022 at 11:15 PM David <dsh1705@...> wrote: The 7 pin has the aux power. |
