Gowesty EVC mattress topper?

Gowesty is having a weekend sale which would bring the cost of the EVC mattress topper and cover to under $200. I’m wondering if it will fit on top of the upper mattress with the top down. It’s 2in and most folks seem to recommend d 1.5 in to fit.?

?

We just returned from a month camping as volunteers at the Malheur refuge. My hip couldn’t take the upper mattress for that long (we had to crash with a friend who had an extra bedroom for the last week.) But we prefer to sleep upstairs. And we often travel with a tandem bike inside so storage space is at a premium!

?

It’s a weekend sale and GoWestys customer service is closed for the weekend!?

?

Thanks for any assistance!

I tossed the old camper van top mattress years ago and replaced it with a 4” custom mattress, 2” hard foam & 2” memory foam, from Custom Mattress and never slept better. I had to lower the locking roof rods a couple of turns and the roof closes fine.?

Thanks Darin. What do you mean by lowering the locking roof rods a couple of turns??

Hi Bailey,

I have thought about this topic a lot. Several years ago I purchased the mattress topper from GoWesty. It definitely made a difference, sleep wise, just giving a little more cushion on what was already a pretty old and tired mattress which was kind of skinny from the beginning. I don't think you will have trouble closing the roof with the topper, at least I didn't in my '95 EVC. I do want to comment, though, on Darin's post. I think that constructing an entire new mattress (there are some really good options for purchasing foam - here's one:?) is a really smart idea. For one thing consider that your existing mattress is at least 20 years old and for another, who knows what quality WInnebago put into it in the first place? I have been a little bit (really just a little) annoyed at having "one extra thing" which, in this case, is the mattress topper to stow and worry about. Darin's idea does away with this problem. Maybe you could fit an upgraded mattress into the supplied mattress coverings? That would save some expense. Or you could do what I have done and just enjoy the little extra cushion that the topper provides.

Hope this helps,
Louis

Thank you Louis! I agree-a very good idea. We just recently replaced the mattress with new hard foam. We like a firm mattress but apparently it’s too firm—so the topper is my best option! Thanks for letting me know it fits ok.?

We went with an IKEA memory foam topper that has both a cool and warm side as wife sleeps on the warm side. Was skeptical at first but there is a very noticeable difference. Purchased the full size and tested in the living room for a few nights and passed.? Then pulled out the memory foam from the enclosure and cut the width down to fit? and put back into the enclosure. It folds/rolls and sits on top of the original foam topper in the back . Super comfortable and semi-easy to deploy. We have done three major trips of 30 nights each and never missed our home bed. Below is a link.

There are cheaper options if the cool gel is not needed. I considered the go west.option but wasn't comfortable purchasing without a trial test to confirm desired comfort and ability to return at minimal/no cost. Best of luck!

Here's a thread about mattresses including the Exped Megamat, which I love:

I don't think this addresses your concern exactly but will add in my solution to the mix for others who are deciding what to do for a topper.

First of all,? I like the cover that Gowesty sells but did not want memory foam and did not want to pay GW's higher prices either. It was coming up to $300?
before?shipping and was not on sale at the time.?
?
?
GW sells the custom cover solo without the foam, so I bought that during a free shipping sale and then ordered the highest quality and most appropriate (denser and harder for us) foam online at foambymail.com and cut it down to fit the tri-fold cover from GoWesty.
?
Best of both worlds.? Custom cover, high quality fabric, matching color tri-fold.? No sewing to be done.? Foam I wanted.? About $170 total shipped adding up the two orders. Depends on which foam you choose; it could be cheaper but best to go with the dense stuff.
?
Amanda at Foambymail (aka foamfactory) is super helpful for choosing your foam by the way.??

Thanks much!! I went ahead with the topper yesterday since we had just gotten new mattress foam. But the Exped REI is appealing at 20% off for members!?

Early in our volunteer stint I mentioned the uncomfortable mattress to a visitor who told me about this brand. He and his wife both recommended it. The price and inflatable were strong negatives. But REI is a strong positive! Crossing my fingers!?

Thanks!!

I echo the recommendations for the Exped Megamat. ?We have a few of them, and they work great for the camper or for houseguests. ?(or when I'm in the doghouse...). I bought one at REI on with the 20% member coupon and one from Campsaver. ?. ?They are pricey but they are very durable. ?I've gone through the REI sleeping mats and the glue breaks down. ?

Here is an alternative. I have been satisfied with it on top of the old mattress. You have to inflate it, but it takes up little space in storage.
