I think it could be-- I saw a van with a extra carrier on top and he said he
made extra props to use on the inside to hold the top up. Bobbie

We are considering purchasing an EVC, but we are concerned about the
fact that we will have to keep taking off our canoe every time we
lift the pop-top. Are there any ways around this? My husband was
wondering if anyone had come up with a device which permitted you to
actually leave the canoe on the top when it is lifted.

Any ideas?

Laurie:

I don't see what the problem is with raising the pop top with canoe still
on - however; you might have a problem in both raising the pop-top and
raising the rear hatch at the same time - I use quik&easy mounting system
with 2X2 cross bars and this works OK

Thanks Hank!

Is weight not an issue? I don't know what the lifting mechanism is,
but I wasn't sure it could handle the weight of the canoe.

As I recall someone on this list reported using ski
poles to hold the top up when they carried a canoe.

I've carried canoes and I've carried a Rocket Box on top and yes, you can
still pop the top. A caveat, though - my top is now skewed and I
occasionally have to really smack it to open it. Fortunately, it hasn't
cracked, as has been some other owners' experience.

If you loaded boats in the center and were very very careful about opening
and closing it .... maybe. Otherwise (and even then), I'd expect trouble
with it at some point.

And the expandable shower curtain rods that are sold at the hardware are
just about the right height to hold the top open.
