Advice on 1993 MV
We are considering purchasing a 1993 MV from a Chevy dealer. The van
has 72K miles on it and is an automatic transmission. We would purchase it to use it for transporting our son in his wheelchair; we'd add a lift off the side. Does anyone have any experience with using it for this purpose and any general words of advice about buying this van? We live near a number of VW dealers. Also, any thoughts on whether it is worth it to pay an extra $700 for a one year extended warranty. The lemon laws in our state require that the dealer already provide a 2,500 mile or 90 day warranty. Thanks for any guidance. |

I have a 93 MV with a weekender package with 85K miles
and like it very much. Last fall, I talked with a couple who also has a 93 EV and who has two teenaged children in wheelchairs. The couple says the van works fine for them. The van has a lot of headroom inside with a level floor. It is not garaged and they bought it new. One other thing, are you sure the van has 72k miles not 172K miles? Hey, what's the matter with a '93 EV w/ 72k miles? I have a '93 with 71k, and I'm the original owner. I know there's at least one other list member that's got a '93 with way less miles than me... On the subject of wheelchair lifts and the EV, VW touted a program back in 92/93 that you could get an EV and put a lift in for handicap access (I don't know what the fine details are). More recently, our esteemed former listmemeber Dr. xxxxx had a child with a disability and specifically purchased the EV for the purpose of transporting said child. Unfortunately, he had greater problems that we could not help him with... Norman '93 EV MV ______________________________________________________ |

Also, any thoughts on whether it is worth it to pay an extra $700 for a$700 sounds a little high...there may be places on the web (Warranty Gold?) that may have a lower-priced, same-coverage deal. I think there's a 100% markup on those extended warranties...you may be able to offer them $350 on the warranty as your final offer. The Eurovan can have some problems, so the warranty is probably a good idea. I own a '93 GL...we really like it, though it's no Jap vehicle as far as repairs go...still, not too bad. -- Bill Salopek Let's meet in Margaritaville... ICQ: 20536257 |

I was able to track down the original owner who traded in her '93 EV for a Chevy. I called her and asked where she had it serviced and the reason why she traded it in. She told me she was sorry she did it as she hated her new Chevy. She traded in the EV after the VW dealer wrote up about $3000 in repairs and pm. I called the dealer and he looked up the records in the computer. Aside from the cracked windshield (already replaced by dealer) I was able to determine that most of the repairs were unnecessary, or I could do them myself. Now for the warranty. Most of these won't cover the likely things that will or could go wrong. They will only cover failure of internally lubricated parts, or have such a high deductible, you won't be able to get much if any of most repairs covered. They won't cover your tires, brakes, exhaust, battery, electrical system, air conditioning, or radiator. I've even seen where they won't cover "exotic" vehicles, which the EuroVan may be one of. Carefully check what they cover and how much the deductible will cost you. Linda,
Does the van have any paperwork on work done to the van? @ 60K miles the timing belt, etc needs to be replaced. If there is no evidence that this has been done, try to get ~$150 off to cover this (1/2 of the cost). Get the extended warranty. Its cheap insurance - even if its $600. I'd read the fine print. It should cover all of the mechanical its. Also note what the deductable amount is. I think your son will like the van. It has great headroom and space to move around. Along time ago, a gentleman (doug hardekopf, dhardekop@...) was selling a 93 GL with a wheelchair lift. You might try emailing him and asking him how it worked out. If I were you, I'd attend to the following: 1. Make sure the tranny is in good working order and not already marginal, or on the way out. 2. Make sure the timing & serpentine belts have recently been changed. 3. Assume that you'll be replacing the engine & tranny mounts soon. If engine compression is still good and these 3 items are satisfactorily addressed, it should be a pretty dependable vehicle. Regards. Kit Linda C. Freeman wrote:
