coil and other codes, 99 euro running rough and wont start sometimes.

for the past few months car has been running rough when ideling. and a
few times over the winter it would do it only after a hard rain. last
week it wouldnt start, new battery, just wouldnt turn over. after some
rest it started took it to VW. had codes PO400 EGR bad they think that
is the solenoid. PO300 and PO302 misfires. needs coil plugs and wires.
I am going to do the coil first as I have had that code in the past,
arcing. just dont have money to do all. also possiable speed sensor?
The car always started for them. but has done it on me 2 more times
while waiting for coil.

Question: Does the primary problem sound like it would be the
coil/plugs. Or would You try something else first. Check engine light
has come on and off for 6+ months, started only after rain then off
when dry now on after this problem 90% of time.....thanks for your
help....todd R.I. via Oregon

When you say it wouldn't turn over, do you mean you turn the key and nothing happens? The starter doesn't turn the engine?

Maybe a bad starter, or bad ignition switch?

There are so many problems that can cause misfires. I have been fighting this on my '99 GLS for around 8 months now.

If you have a bad speed sensor it should throw a code, and you will have problems with your speedometer. I replaced mine recently as the speedometer would stop working sometimes while going down the road. It was very easy to replace.

Use a spray bottle and mist the coil with the engine running and see if you get your rough running to return. You can also mist each plug wire.

Hi Todd,

If the starter doesn't go when you turn the key, that's most likely a
totally different problem than if the starter goes but the motor
doesn't start.

"No starter" is usually a relatively simple thing to figure out...
- not in Park or Neutral (I have seen this more times than you'd think!)
- weak battery (try a boost start?)
- poor (dirty) battery connections
- poor connections in small wire to solenoid
- bad ignition switch
- bad neutral safety switch (try starting in Neutral)
- bad starter or starter solenoid

Turn the headlights on... they should be turned off automatically when
you turn the key to start. If not, that suggests something in the key
switch or related wiring.

I have sometimes connected 12v from the battery to the small wire on
the starter solenoid. If it cranks, starter is OK, problem is
somewhere in the circuit from the battery to the key to the starter
solenoid.

Can't comment on the CEL and coil... I have the old 5 cyl motor which
is very different.

That's the BIG clue, right there. If your battery went dead and you
put in a new battery... and, subsequently you did get the engine
started, but are lamenting that you have a rough engine... and then
spend all kinds of money at a dealership. Slow down a second!!

Did you perform a throttle body adaption after your battery install?

If you didn't, you very well could have a very rough engine.

But, you can fix it yourself (if that's the problem) without much
fuss and certainly no expense. Just do the throttle body procedure
and see if that doesn't clear up the rough engine.

This response is very interesting because it does seem the rough
ideling started just after I put a new battery in. How can I find out
how to do the throttle body adaption? I am suppose to be bringing the
van in today for the new coil 1200$. although that code has been
going on for many months so I proably should do that too? thanks for
all the help

Disconnect battery again, reconnect.

Turn ignition on but do not start car. Let it sit w/the ignition on for a few minutes. Done.

I had the new coil plugs and wires put in yesterday and they reset it
for me and it seems to be ideling better, thanks for the rest info
though. I actually had lots of transmision problems last fall , spent
500 dollars in diagnostic tests with no fix and someone told me that
trick here. 20 sec. and problem gone.

So after 1200 dolars yesterday for coil etc. the vw would not start
for them, which is why I brought it in, in the first place. they are
saying I need a new speed sensor. I have no problems with the
speedometer. Does this sound realistc?

Does what sound realistic? That you keep bringing your van to these
bozos or that they want to sell you a new speed sensor?

I replaced my speed sensor a few weeks ago. The symptoms were no speedometer, or the needle would swing wildly.

It would also throw a CEL code when it stopped working. I never had an issue with the van not starting.

Are you sure they didn't say cam position sensor? This would make more sense to me. Both would throw a code though.
