Cracked Exhaust Manifold-no part availability!
Hi all,
I have a 2002 Weekender with 65,000 miles. I started hearing a new sound from the engine recently, and took it in to my trusted mechanic, Lusti Motors, here in San Diego. They diagnosed a cracked exhaust manifold. Needless to say, I'm getting ready for an $800+ repair job. The only thing is, there are no manifolds available. Lusti tells me they're on backorder at VW HQ and they have no way of knowing when they'll get one. They offered to attempt a weld, but couldn't guarantee a fix, in which case I'd be on the hook for two manifold jobs. Anyone here know of a secret source for this part. I don't want to drive with this leak for too much longer. Thanks. |
I would just get it Professionally TIG welded. The weld itself would be
stronger than the metal, if done right. However, here is part that is often not done and will probably cause a problem in the future. Bring it to a machine shop and have the exhaust flanges machined down to make sure it is not warp. You are looking at max 150 max not including labor. Any performance shop can tig weld. If you are local, I would have tig welded it for you for the price of the welding gas...20 bucks. |

I looked these up through my sources and I found one manifold in stock in the US. It is the manifold that does cylinders 4-6. The manifold is in two parts. One half does cylinder 1-3 and the other does cylinders 4-6. Do you know which of these two you need? It is hard for me to imagine that both manifolds would be bad at the same time. The other manifold does seem to be unavailable at the moment. However I have another source that can do a red order for something like this as long as it is available in Germany for about another $20 onto the price. The manifolds are selling for $369 each. Let me know if you want my help securing this for you.

Thanks Ken. I'll check with the mechanic on the particular manifold in question. By the

way, I've never been in the position where I've had to bring my own part to a mechanic and have them install it. Do they get perturbed that they can't secure the part themselves and add their markup? What's protocol here? --- In ev_update@..., Ken Wilford <Kenwilfy@...> wrote:

You should ask them first. If they can't get the part and you can they probably won't care. However if you show up with a box of parts

that you bought from someone else and then demand that they install them, they will probably tell you to take a hike. Hope this helps, Ken Wilford John 3:16 www.vanagain.com foosnews wrote:

Thanks Ken. I'll check with the mechanic on the particular manifold in question. By theit's been my experience that fluid they usually will let you bring in since people often have preferences w/fluids. parts generally no, however... 1. I have had mechanics, even a VW dealer, let me do that if it was something I was truly stuck with...like doing a brake job but couldn't get the rotors off...if they see that I tried and I was in a bind they were nice enough to finish off the job for me w/o giving me grief about the parts. 2. If they do let you bring your own parts, they probably will not honor a warranty regarding the part (that is, usually if it's their parts, you get 12 months/12K miles usually on the part but if you bring your own, no warranty). |
