Checking transmission fluid in V6?

My auto transmission in my 99 EVC makes a humming sound for the first 1/2
mile or so after a cold start. I suspect the fluid may be low. I have located
the filler cap on top of the transmission, but no dip stick. How is the
level checked ? Does Bentley offer any help on this? Thanks for any help.

There is no dipstick. The factory book shows opening a plug where the
dipstick used to be and hooking up the VAG 1551 scanner and when the
fluid dribbles out the plug hole the level is right.

It sounds like a really dumb thing to not have a trans dipstick and
have to use a scanner just to check a fluid level!

I suspect that you could do this without the scanner, just make sure
that the fluid is warmed up fully. But the book also says that the
plug is destroyed when it is removed so you will need a new one.

Be clean clean clean!
Any crud that falls in the ATF can trash your trans!

Thanks Donald for your reply. My 99 auto transmission has the fill plug in
the top of a tube about 2 inches above the pan area. I suppose that that is
to set the proper level when it dribbles out. I wonder why they would need
to hook up the VAG 1551 scanner while filling. The plug has double O rings
and looks as though it it is reusable. It also has a red safety band to
prevent the plug from popping out. Since mine is noisy when cold I suppose I
should top it off. I was just worried about overfilling. Thanks again
