Aux Battery

I still have a problem charging my aux. battery. The 3 post solenoid
is OK. The small wire that goes to the center post does not get 12v
when the engine is running. I have traced it through the firewall to
a black wire with a blue stripe on a 12 pin connector on the back of
the fuse panel. The wire does not ever get 12 volts.

1. What am I missing?

2. Can the wire to the solenoid center post go to any switched 12v
connection?

I don't know if this is the case on your EV, but my '74 Westy receives power
from the voltage regulator and only when the main battery is charging. At
idle, I will not get any voltage across this wire. This about drove me crazy
trying to figure this out.

Try stepping on the gas a bit while you check the voltage.

Last 3 weeks I spent time trying to track down a simmilar problem.
After checking all the possible probs (solenoid, both batteries,
alternator), I tried charging my battery while it was out of the
vehicle with a standard $40 trickle charger from Autozone. It did not
hold a charge. Took the battery back to Autozone (deep cycle
Duralast) and they replaced it for free. It was less than one year
old.

After talking to alot of people on this subject I came to the
conclusion that ALWAYS look at the battery 1st, they fail more often
than the rest of the system.

You're very, very close. You have two choices: Figure out why 12V
isn't reaching that wire, or connect the solenoid to another switched
12V connection. To do the first, it would be easiest if you had a
wiring diagram for your year's EV. I'd start looking in the Bently
manual. But it sounds like you're thinking about the second option.

I don't see why not. It will draw very little current. Of course, it
must be a switched circuit that is not energized when the engine is
off. For safety's sake, the solenoid should take its power from
something DOWNSTREAM of a fuse, so that the fuse will protect you if
there's ever a short circuit in the solenoid.

Which brings up the point -- it wouldn't hurt to check your fuses for
continuity, on the off chance that a blown fuse is causing your
trouble. Offhand, I'm not sure which circuit that solenoid is powered
from, though.
