I visited my hometown of Laconia, NH, this weekend and stopped by the
local EVC dealer to take a look at the 2000 models. As usual, there were two
on the lot, one of which was sold. The dealer was closed (Sunday), so I was
limited to "window shopping" for these vehicles with a $36,976 sticker price.
I could see the new drawer replacing part of the large cupboard under the
sink. The redesigned medicine cabinet area, where the utensil drawer was
removed, looks like the stock was originally cut for the older design, and
the utensil drawer opening was filled in with a block and faced with the
darker grey trim, contrasting with the rest of the cabinet. The new mirror
is recessed in the door, which would be more secure than just gluing it to a
flat surface.
The small piece of counter space in front of where the utensil draw was
has two recessed cup holders. Since my two person family would normally not
have a passenger on the rear bench during transit, these holders are not as
useful to me as a flat surface. Has anyone tried to cover up these holes? I
am also wondering if these cup holders protrude into the top of the drop down
cabinet area where some listees have installed a CD changer.
The upholstery is still grey, but has a pattern of 3 inch high "1"'s and
"0"s on it. I can only guess that this binary design is Winnebago's attempt
to enter the digital age. :>) If I had a choice, I suppose I would not
select this pattern over the earlier designs.
I also verified Ray Cooke's comments about the wheel wells. Most modern
vehicles have a synthetic shell snapped into the wheel well to protect the
metal body. The EVC has the metal work covered with a rustprofing material,
and no snap in shell. I agree with Ray; it looks like this area is going to
take a beating from ice and snow, as well as stones thrown from the tire
threads. There are also delicate looking struts running through the area,
and the horns and some other items are exposed to the underneath. Does the
EV GLS or the older EVC have a synthetic shell for protection?
Finally, I checked out the "secret" folding feature of the side mirrors,
and verified that YUP, they sure do creak. Regardless of the noise, this
feature will get me about 6 inches closer to the door jamb when shoehorning
an EVC into my small garage.
