Re: Battery powered soldering iron
I've tried many battery powered soldering irons, all failed in less then a year.
I now use a Weller butane soldering iron, it is about 40 years old, works great, came with a wide selection of

Battery powered soldering iron
Looking for good recommendations on a battery powered soldering iron.
Precision work is a requirement, doesn't need to work for hours on end,
1/2 hour every now and then is enough.
Any

Re: Guitar string danger (actually any thin string from a guitar, banjo or ukulele.)
The problem with that is right-angle plugs. Instead of the wire trailing down the wall on its way to wherever it's going, you end up with the wire exiting the plug in an upward direction, which can

Guitar string danger (actually any thin string from a guitar, banjo or ukulele.)
Strictly speaking this isn't electronics but I've noticed many people who are into electronics also play guitar (and conversely, many people who play guitar are into electronics.)
I've "played"

Re: How do you measure really high voltage...like for a spark plug.
The advantage of an electrostatic voltmeter is there is no load on the power source after the capacitor charges, for high voltage power supplies for things like nite scopes (starlight scopes), these

Re: How do you measure really high voltage...like for a spark plug.
Maybe the Porsche had more air flow across the ignition coil and kept it cooler. All I know is I went through 4 coils in VW bugs and my wife put 50K on the transporter with no coil problems. Fuel pump

Re: How do you measure really high voltage...like for a spark plug.
What amazes me is ignition systems like the 1998 ZX2 with one "plug pack' for each of the 2 pairs of spark plugs, the high voltage winding wasn't grounded and one end fed each spark plug.
So one

Re: How do you measure really high voltage...like for a spark plug.
I remember spinning plates, not any bear. Could never see the point of them. 1960 was quite the year, but I'd rather not go back there...
Lots of stupid stuff out there on the 'net. YT doesn't

Re: How do you measure really high voltage...like for a spark plug.
1 - I agree that suggesting connecting mains through a resistive divider to an MCU input is nearly criminal. But I also remember, as a young lad, connecting the line voltage through a diode bridge to

I was going through a cluttered computer subdirectory and found the original program SDRplay used as the basis for their SDRuno software.

Too bad this isn't 1960 and the Ed Sullivan show was on Sunday nights because the presenter is a much better comedian then engineer. His escapades would go over quite well with dancing bears and guys

Re: How do you measure really high voltage...like for a spark plug.
I'll extract the coil to spark plug wiring for the 1998 Ford ZX2 so you can see what I meant.
File shall be named "ZX2 Ignition.doc", a word document with embedded graphic.

Re: How do you measure really high voltage...like for a spark plug.
1 - the Freon also provided insulation for the voltage divider resistors. When the Freon eventually leaked away, you could see the corona on the internal connections.
2 - the polarity of the spark

Re: How do you measure really high voltage...like for a spark plug.
A potential problem is the voltage also has to have enough current when the cylinder is at the top of the compression cycle and a voltage reading under "no load" might not indicate the voltage when

I’m not sure after all this time if the group rules allow posting links to Amazon site. So I’ll just tell you to go to Amazon and search for “spark plug voltage tester”. You

Re: How do you measure really high voltage...like for a spark plug.
Somehow the idea of using a HV probe that requires Freon cooling is a bit beyond the pale even for me!

Re: How do you measure really high voltage...like for a spark plug.
Back when I was doing automotive ignition system system development, we used a Tektronix HV probe, quite similar to https://www.bellnw.com/products/tektronix-p6015a It required a Freon charge inside
