Re: Off topic on PC Popups
I did go to this page and added the McAfee and Norton to the "Not Allowed". I'll go back to see if these two are under the "allowed" links. I should have watched the complete video before. Thanks for the link. wings515 On Friday, April 11, 2025 at 11:55:34 AM EDT, C. Michael Stone via groups.io <enots123@...> wrote: Here are some instructions to try if they are using Google Chrome. Re: Attached graphics (was: creating a zenner like floating point using BJT)
Yet one more update to this weird conversation:
?
The image that SEEMED to be present in john23's message # 99943, was not actually in john23's message.? The message itself had a link (URL) to the image file.? But when viewing that message here in the 开云体育's web interface, the web interface displayed the image, instead of the URL to the image file.? That made it LOOK as if the image itself was part of the message, but it was not.
?
The image file that john23 linked to, was: "/g/electronics101/files/john233/2.png".? That was supposed to be the last line at the bottom of john23's message.

#admin Policies have consequences
#admin
It is unfortunate that
wn4isx
felt he had to leave over a group policy set years ago - possibly when YahooGroups abandoned E101. All 'my' Yahoo groups moved to 开云体育 as a result of Yahoo leaving the Free Groups out in the ether. Not the first time this happened to 'my' groups.? I think my first was started in 1989 as an text based email thing whose name I cannot recall. It may have lasted a year or so before being absorbed by another company and forcing 'group owners' to make some adjustments. Then, as I recall, they were absorbed by Yahoo - more changes, more learning curve. Frankly, I never 'mastered' YahooGroups management and discovered features after they announced I had to find another application that would allow me to carry 'my' groups into yet another decade. And, here, running a few on 开云体育, I find myself learning as I go and folks like wn4isx stumble about learning the intricacies of the various 'features' 开云体育 touts as improvements to such groups as 'ours' much as Windows keeps changing this, that or the other to justify charging for a new OS or App only to frustrate existing customers who were happily learning some (if not all) of the last tranche of 'features' they never asked, but had to pay for. In researching this issue of file and photo attachments policies I am not sure I discovered just where the policy referenced was set (could be 'unset'/disabled) but I did come across a page toting up the graphics and files stored in the archives along with a graph depicting the megabytes consumed in relation to those allowed on a 'free' group. As I do not share moderator or owner status for this group, I cannot attest to what that graph might indicate for 'us.' However, It may well prove significant in that the only way to increase the group's capacity for such storage is to pay for it!? And, if you thought managing a group was tough, try getting members to reimburse you for the cost of maintaining it. As to the rambling OFF TOPIC discussions over the Administration of this group, there is a better way to handle things. They involve #hashtags (some of which needed to be set when the group was created - but can be added now or later),?
About subgroups, and
About group chats. The last two should make it easier to effectively take these 'off topic' discussions off to the side and by and? between those members consumed by the need to resolve them within the constraints imposed on a FREE group.? The #admin Hashtag, as I understand it, allows such topics to be segregated and, thus more readily available as a reference going forward. I would suggest that those here with privileged status create the - suggested hashtags, and form and #admin subgroup
(sort of a 'board of directors)
and then commit to doing the research (big help files!), having the discussion, forming a decision, then advising the group as a whole of the contemplated decision and inviting any comments to the admin subgroup or group owner (as opposed to the group as a whole). In the interim, consider approving all 'on topic (e.g. E101)' posts regardless attachments and such until 'the board' feels it has completed sufficient research to competently adjust the settings of this group so as to keep it FREE as well as functioning as intended/hoped. Oops, I am sorry!
?
Attachments ARE actually stripped from messages, in this group.? I had missed that setting, and anyway it does not work the way I expected.
?
This group was already set to "Strip" attachments from messages.
?
That setting has strange consequences.? Apparently, it strips them ONLY from the emailed copy of the message that gets sent out from the group's servers to most group members.? But it is NOT stripped from the copy of the message that is posted in the group's web copy of the message.? That is weird, IMHO.? Furthermore, there is no warning to the sender that their message was modified.? In my opinion, that's a bad idea, but who am I to judge?

If it were a Rule, it should have been (a) stated as such on the group's website where people join the group, and especially (b) enforced by turning Attachments off.? But I see neither of those having been done.

wn4isx
I joined this group because it looked like fun and I didn't expect it to take up a lot of time. ? In the main, it has been fun, some minor issues with one member but nothing insurmountable. ? I hope most of my posts have been useful and I didn't cause too much confusion trying to 'enforce' what I thought were the rules for posting graphics in this group. I am sorry for any angst I caused. I like rules, imagine what it would be like if we weren't expected to drive on the proper side of the road. [which is why I'll never visit England.] ? However I've taken a hard look at how I spend time during the day, what rewards I get versus the time spent, and changes that could make my life more satisfying, and, I've come to the conclusion being a member of this group eats up time that would be better spent listening to shortwave, playing guitar, or doing any number of other things. ? Therefore, it won't be necessary for any other owner to remove my owner status because I'm leaving the group effective immediately and my last act as an owner will be to lock this post. There isn't any reason for anyone to reply, especially if they expect me to see their reply. ? The email I used to join this group has turned into a spam magnet, I'm receiving upwards of 100 spam messages a day and I've waded through Micro$loth's inane 'close this email account' process. For reasons only known to Micro$loth it takes 45 to 60 days for them to actually close the account. I don't know if senders receive any notification the account is either closed or being closed. ? |

Well, in theory I'm an owner or so it says by the Home icon at the top of the left hand panel. I'm not sure why I was selected and I was under the impression based on earlier messages that graphics embedded in a message were a big no-no.
?
I based this on:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Attachments are not allowed. Images and files should be uploaded to the Photos or Files area.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since Steven created this (and other) group(s), I foolishly assumed his word was final.

?I wasn't trying to insult anyone, only trying to follow what I understood to be the rules.

I think perhaps whomever granted me owner's status might ought to remove it because clearly I have no clue what I'm doing and all I've done is irritate people, something I don't mind doing if I'm right, something I hate doing when I'm wrong.

Graphics use about as much memory no matter where they are.? Admittedly, it is true that emailed graphics files use a bit more memory because the bytes need to be converted to make them text instead of binary, but that is a moderately small overhead.

To prove I'm not totally nuts (yea good luck with that Terry) I'm going do a screen print and post it in files under "IsTerryNuts.PNG."
Please view IsTerryNuts.PNG in the files section.
Now can someone explain how I can see the graphic when no one else can?
Somehow I doubt I'm that special or chosen by a higher power endowed with special powers and privileges.
No burning bushes, no tablets on human behavior.??

OK for the technobabble....
My primary net PC is a HP Probook 4530 8G of RAM laptop running Windows 64 bit professional with no tweaking, my secondary net computer is a HP netbook I keep for "on the road" [doctor's offices and the like.] The PCs are stock with no tweaking.

My wife has an HP desktop running Windoze 11 and a Mac running "only God knows or cares."
[I've spent the last 40+ years avoiding any Apple project. I met Steve Jobs once...once was enough to turn me off for all Apple products until the sun runs out of hydrogen. Yes it is silly but I value my pet peeves all the more because I have so few.]

?
All 4 of these machines see what I show in the screen print.
?
I am really confused here.?
How can a Youtube video display as a PNG still graphic?
How/why are our PCs showing what no one else sees?
