I've seen some stuff out there that puts a cap across rectifier diodes, sometimes just two out of the four, not sure why they'd do that. I also used to see a cap across the AC line, or a series-connected pair of them. Nowadays it's commonly part of an EMI filter, with multiple parts, common mode choke, etc.
Speaking of which, I threw a bunch of that stuff into a box I've labeled "line filters". They seem to use a lot of different values for caps, and I have no idea how to determine what's a reasonable amount of current you can put through one of those coils. Any thoughts on that?
