PWM

OK all you tech. guys (I'm NOT).? Has anyone done a test with controlled inputs and readings for the benefit of PWM (pulse width modulation) trolling motors?? All I know is that they run much longer (as advertised) with the same battery.? I'm fixing to start using one (36V. 1.3 KW) for aux. on my HA18 Catboat.? Trying to figure how much battery I need?? YES, I know the standard answer, "All I can afford".? thanks,? Glenn H.

Interesting.? I wonder if it's a moot point and basically anything you would get today is going to be PWM?

Dan, That answer is no as far as "trolling motors".? Everything with 5/2 speeds is Pot/Resistance controlled.? Motors sold as "variable" speed are usually PWM. and more expensive of course.? Since the "magic" is in the controller, perhaps most new, separate, board type controllers are PWM?? Glenn

I use a Minn-Kota Endura Max with standard prop on my 19' O'Day Mariner. The trolling motor is six years old and has PWM. It's remarkable how efficient it is at low speeds.

I separated the control head to achieve remote operation and did not suffer any losses nor have I noticed interference with other electronics on board.

For returning to the marina in calm water, power is adequate. But if there is chop or wakes from powerboats, I often feel underpowered.

Thanks Walter, Is that a 12,24, 0r 36v. motor? And what do you have for batteries? Glenn

That model is 12V. I have two 100Ah 12V AGM batteries with On-Off-Both selector. Had plans to go to Torqeedo Cruise 2.0 someday if the boat satisfied my needs, but have not make the move yet. I could get the 24V for that with these batteries and upgrade to Lithium in yet another $$ move.

Correction - That should be 1, 2, Both selector switch..
