Pontoon Boats?

dano900_2000

I have a 18' pontoon boat and I'm very interested
in putting together a system for use in lakes here
in Ohio that don't allow gas engins. Has anyone put
together a electric drive on a pontoon or can lead me in
the right direction to get this going?

I think your best option would be to look for a
45-60 pound thrust trolling motor. All of the sporting
goods magazines and stores aways have sales on. You
might also pick up something in the local swapper
papers at the convenient stores in your area. I saw a
rig like that at the Electric Boat Meet in St.
Michaels, MD last year. The two older fellows and their dog
had a ball with it. It would probably be 24 or 36
volt. Good Luck, Zinger

I'd try to find an old outboard lower end with a
10 x10 or 12 x 12 prop. Next I'd buy a Scott 2 HP PM
motor and a curtis controller from either KTA or
WildeEV or any other EV dealer. given these component I'd
retrofit the outboard (plans are avaible from Glenn-L.com.
Next I'd buy some good deep cycle sealed lead acid
batteries from Optima or Hawker. The whole package would
run less than $2000 including battery charger and any
misc parts. You'd have an effective max speed of about
8 kts and a nice 4 or 5 hr hour cruising speed of
about 5 kts.

Just my $02 worth.

Don Baer

Don:

I am always seeing new things here. Tell me more about a Scott 2HP PM motor. Do they make a larger one, 3or 4 HP?

Bill

Bill,
Scott motors is part of Imperial
motors. The Scott factory is in, of all places
Alamagordo,NM.
They make permenant magnet DC motors 24-48 Volts up to
and including 4 HP. They are sending me motor curves
etc on all of their 1750 and 1150 RPM designs 2-4 Hp.
I'll be glad to pass on whatever else I find out. They
appeal to me for a number of reasons, the first is there
a perminant magnet design and should have higher
effeciency than the Advanced Motors especialy at lower
speeds. They also are a US manufacturer so they should be
easier to deal with than Lynch who also make PM motors
of this size. I was refered to them by Ken Kotch of
KTA, a dealer of components for EV's. He was kind
enough to put me in touch with them.
