Too many engineers
Ah, I don't know how to put this politely, but
there's been lotsa discussion about hull speed and
horsepower calculations, and while none of it has been
outright wrong (except for that one website

Re: Help - Just about to buy new boat!!
You don't necessarily have to get power run to
your dock, if you're willing to buy a small portable
electric generator, cost you about $500 or so, and
recharge your batteries from that. (Of course,

Depending on how often you use the boat, solar
panels might keep it pretty well charged up.

Thank you so much for the reply!! I will look
into the route you talked about. It's just a real

Another Online Calculator-much better!
Here's another calculator from the discussion
over at rec.boats.building. It makes a simple hull
drawing you can view by moving your mouse.

You really did misunderstand the part about
recharging--there's no way the boat could charge herself while
underway, and therefore not need charging. Not only ain't

I agree--that website's formula is really wacky.
I just asked it for the hull speed of the Elco 30,
which I designed for Elco in 1987--a classic fantail

As I said, I dont vouch for the accuracy of what
I found out. I do note however, that one advantage
of the shunt wound is that you can control the shunt
instead of the armature and thereby use a ca 10

Marvin, It would almost apear that this is to
good of a deal to pass up. The problem is that most of
the less expensive speed controls use resistors in
series with the motor to drop the voltage. While

Re: Online Hull Speed and Hp Calculator
I got a questionable result for my 34' Columbia
sailboat.... 8 kts and 34.6 hp. Both seem high to me, the
Palmer M60 gas engine (now defunct) pushed the boat to
5.5 kts, and was rated at 22 hp (max)
