Re: [Electric Boats] Re: house boat + hybrid
Wouldn't there be a few advantages? Less moving parts, so less maintenance. Solar bank could charge the battery bank. It is quieter. More Torque at low RPM's. No Diesel smell. Stay Cool Aaron Costic

Re: house boat + hybrid
To me, a houseboat would be a poor application for hybrid technology. Since the ICE would typically be run at one speed, you don't need the batteries for acceleration or range, so therefore, they have

In Little's book he showed a houseboat with it's roof covered in solar panels for charging.

According to the article in either Pop Sci or Pop Mech cost was the reason the HS kids were using super-caps (can't remember if alone or to augment batteries) instead of the large Li-ion batteries the

Re: [Electric Boats] Advice on repowering a Cal 29
David, You're correct, 30nm at 5 knots is not something that is normally accomplished with the electric motor and battery bank alone. You would need some type of alternate power to put a charge back

I understand that Nissan is working on a hybrid auto using supercapacitors instead of batteries.? In that application it might work very well, lots of power, quick recharge etc.? In a PLANING

I'd think long and hard before installing an AIRcooled engine in the belly of a sailboat...? Adequate ventilation might be a challenge.

Charlie, We are also in the beginning stages of planning a battery powered houseboat 16' x 60'. We are hoping the auto industry will lead the way & make this possible Stay Cool Aaron Costic Elegant

Re: [Electric Boats] Advice on repowering a Cal 29
Hatz makes a nice aircooled diesel, about 10hp, the changfa (185=9HP, 195=13.38HP, 1115= 22HP) is a better solution. Steve Spence Renewable energy and self sufficiency http://www.green-trust.org

Advice on repowering a Cal 29
I have a 1973 Cal 29 that I own with a partner. It has a 1 cyl Farymann 12 hp diesel that works, but needs lots of attention. We both agree that we should replace it to get more power and less

All I know is it is a Chinese design. Have you seen the Ray Electric? They've been around for 30 years. I believe their largest design is 5hp.

Re: super battery
Do a Web search for super-capacitor. In an electric car comp against MIT, VA Tech, Stanford and the like, some high school kids won with a Factory Five car kit and using super-capacitors. :-)

Re: house boat + hybrid
Charlie, Not me, but there are some big industry, big dollar efforts playing with marine hybrids. The reasonable target: more fuel efficient planing. It makes sense to use both motors (oil & electric)
