Hi,

Power or sail, Size, Range expected would be helpful.

Although I think i saw one today on electricmarina.com.

Fair winds.

Subject: [electricboats] Looking to Purchase an Electric Boat

?

Hi, does anyone have any suggestions on where I can buy a used GOOD QUALITY electric boat for a good price?
Also open to hearing offers.
Thanks

You did not say what type of size boat you are looking for, but YachtWorld now has a FuelType of electric in its advanced search setting. So it should be pretty easy to get a list of electric boats for sale, once you enter In your other requirements :?

Re: Proper propellor

(Real quick, I think that Bryan at Valley prop)

For anyone looking to match a prop for your boat, check out and there is a link for calculators.? Fill in your boat's features (Thunderstruck 10k RPM max is 2400) and 13HP.? This will get you close.? I don't know what exactly we would change on this calculation to be more of a match for the electric motor but it uses the horsepower, gear ratio and rpm (I believe) to arrive at Total available torque ft/lbs at the engine, power loss at the gear and Total horsepower at the propeller and torque ft/lbs at the propeller.? I assume they did their formula?based on a combustion engine and it does not ask that question.? It also assumes the desired speed should be achieved at 90% of the throttle in that combustion engine.??

For all you electric motor guys what are your thoughts on what the difference would be for the electric motor and how it would effect these calculations?? Electric motors are supposed to have more torque right?? Would that mean a propeller better adapted would have a 10% larger diameter for the same effect, a 5% higher pitch or the opposite?? Is it better economy in amps to spin the motor slower with more resistance or higher with less resistance or is it a wash and either way exerts the same energy?? Seems like if it's equal, slower would be less wear and tear on bearings etc.

I'm curious about what you have/had for prop size.? I've got a Catalina 27 that I'm converting to the 10KW kit from Thunderstruck and yesterday I pulled the boat for bottom work and took a look at the current prop from a Atomic4 setup.? Prop is a 2 blade and looks to be about 10 inches.? Its in sad shape and I'm considering replacing it.

As for a Gen set I am looking into hydrogen fuel cell solutions - while they currently struggle to deliver serious kW loads, performance is set to improve and the complete absence of fossil fuel use (and black water storage due to replacing the flush heads with composting ones) allows considerable onboard storage space to be repurposed ...

Ah, I take it the Thunderstruck ME1616 is rated at 10kW ... again, pretty much exactly what I plan to install in my own 34ft powercat conversion, although the make has not been decided yet (possibly Fischer Panda pod drives).

I am currently also looking into a way to install a dual function Flettner rotor sail and vertical axis wind turbine on the cabin roof. I know that sounds mad, but there is a small chance I may be able to make it work - some VAWT manufacturers are interested in the idea as VAWT alone don’t sell very well.

Re: 39' sloop conversion

Hello Matt and everyone else here. I have been a lurker for some time myself, mostly due to time constraints. My name is Ryan.?

I have been playing an old 24' aluminum cabin cruiser, a 1966 Lonestar cruisliner III for several years now. Aside from completely re working the hull and rebuilding/rewireing everything, I i also installed 2 qty ecology brand 100w 12v panels when I was about to put her in the water the first time 2 years ago. Originally, this was just to maintain the 12v house systems at anchor for lighting, ventilation, radio, ECT.?
I happened to bring a 42lb thrust 12v Minn kota on one of the first water trials and was happy to see that it would push my not-so-small boat around 3?
Miles an hour in mild wind conditions constantly in the presence of full sun. This is what inclined me to further my experimentation.?

I last year added another 2x 100w 12v modules, and designed and built a system to use them to charge a 48v bank of Grp 31 deep cycles in series to attain the voltage necessary to push an old Johnson 9.9 that I converted to electric using a kunray 2kw e-bike chaindrive motor kit.?

This means that I also had to put the solar array in series config to charge the bank, and use an appropriately rated charge controller. Because in parallel configuration, the solar modules' current are addative- so with a max current of around 5.5 amps per panel observed, thos panels in parallel did charge the 12v bank at a maximum of around 22 amps. But in series, the same array is limited by the maximum current that will pass through a single module, so I can only charge the 48v nominal bank at a max of 5.5a again. That means that my 48v array, consisting of 4x 12v 100w panels is actually only capable of producing around 315w. Still not too bad, but I recently purchased a pair of renology 24v 300w panels. These have a max current rating of 9.3 amps, and being that they are 24v, I only need 2 of them to get the 48v nominal to charge the aux propulsion bank. I have not yet had a chance to install them, but this is exiting to me because it should effectively almost double the duty cycle I can get out of the system.?
?I still needed to have 12v available for the house systems, so I installed an "intelligent" 30a 48v to 12v converter. This was the simplest solution I could think of to marry the 48 volt system I built for the auxiliary propulsion to the 12 volt house systems bank.?

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, the boat does around 5 statute mph with the motor controller drawing 30a (max rating is 32a), with a pirhana prop for the old Johnson mounting 5.5 pitch veins

I still have an old evinrude 140 that I converted the vro to a dual stack of standard pumps to run premix (I am a long time Mechanic and know better than to trust those vros). She'll do 35mph all day long on the 2 stroke, but unless I'm in a hurry or trying to outrun a storm, I prefer the quiet, leisurely, and economical pace of my electric conversion, as do my wife and children.?

Pleased to make everyone's acquaintance.?

-ryan

I'm just getting started on my complete conversion from sail to solar. I think I got the last ME1616 that Thunderstruck had in stock, sorry! I'm going with 57KWH of prismatics because, with a good bms to carefully manage SOC and balance, they will outlive me. The only issue is waiting for them to arrive from China. I am using the 4.8Kw of solar panels to charge the LiFePO4 battery and using TMS DC-DC for 12v house power. It's a 50a max inverter so there are 2 that work together to run the windlass. There are dual TMS2500 chargers for recharging from the grid when needed. There's no ICE generator. No fuel onboard at all. All above is per hull because the boat is a 34' Endeavour catamaran. My calculations theorize a 6kt continuous cruise speed with unlimited range on solar while charging and supplying house power needs.

Hi Randy - that sounds remarkably similar to what I am planning for a 34ft Broadblue 346 next year! What motors are you going to use?

Kind regards,

Kai Rabenstein?

Apologies - I meant what power rating the TS-ME1616 would be ...

Randy, that's an ambitious but pretty cool sounding project.? I'd love to hear how it turns out.? I imagine you must live somewhere there is lot's of sunshine!

Re: 39' sloop conversion

Matt, I have a 37ft sloop with the 10kW Thunderstruck kit and 16.8kWh LifePO4 CALB battery (48cells in 3P16S arrangement) and I love it.? I carry a portable 3.5kW generator in my lazarette as a range extender which I can lash to the deck if needed and run cords directly into the shore power receptacle.? It's a more?temporary sort of setup than yours but I'm mostly a day sailor and I have a so I rarely use it.? Looking at your plans I think they look good and probably what I would do.? What part of the PNW are you in (I am in Anacortes).

Re: Proper propellor

I got my prop from Olympic Propeller Co right here in Anacortes.?

Ask me how I know this :)

Prop, on my 28', currently running a 4 bladed 12x12.5 meant for a wakeboard boat. I started out with a 14x10 3 bladed. Imo, get rid of that 2 bladed prop.
