It sounds like a good project.<br><br>I bought a
22' sail boat w/trailer, sails, o/b and a lot of
other junk at a sherif's auction. It was VERY
resonable. I am selling the sails and o/b to help finance my
project.<br><br>I am converting it into a cuddy cabin, open
cockpit, 36 volt launch. I removed most of the cabin. I
did leave the v-birth and head. The v-birth sleeps to
persons very nicely. I am planning to have a flush deck
w/seats on each side to fit the curve of the hull. I will
be using a 2.5 hp, 36 volt golf cart motor, w/6 six
volt golf cart batteries. The boat weighed in around
1800# when I started. With everything stripped out it
now is around 800#. In the end it will probably be
close to the 1500#. I am expecting around 5-6 mph and
4-6 hours operating time. I am using a 2:1 reduction
on the motor and a 12x10 three blade prop. I also
removed the 500# center board and added a keel to the
bottom. <br><br>I think you could find a similar vessel
for $200 to $500 if you keep your eyes open. It would
sure be a lot cheaper then having one built. Used golf
cart equipment is readily avalible also.<br><br>Please
keep me posted with your progress. I hope to some day
get some pictures ready.

Plan to buy/build 18 to 22' fishing/work boat<br>
with cuddy cabin, possible overnighter. Need<br> info
on limitations regarding glass vs. aluminum,<br>
manufactured vs. custom built. Also, power <br>requirements,
i.e., single Ray vs. twin 24V<br>trolling motors. We've
got a lot to learn about <br>this, so any info/advice

This boat is the prototype I designed and built
with the intent of selling a few, however a change in
careers (back to school) forces me to sell it. Any

Bill,<br>Elco is right, an electric motor
computed to be about 3 hp will give you about the same
propulsion as an gas outboard rated at 8 hp. But you can get
an electric motor as big as you like. One propels
the QEII and many other huge seagoing
vessels.Electric motors are never the problem, but batteries can
present problems since their storage capabilities are
limited.<br>You can power the electric motor directly from a
generator,but you would probably want to have some batteries on
board and re-charge them from time to time with the
generator in a hybrid system. It's simple.<br>The
propulsion batteries -- or one or two of them producing 12
volts -- can be used for lights and other accessories,
but it's better to do that separately since it is
useful to keep all the propulsion batteries at the same
level.<br>Electric refrigeration is installed on some manufactured
boats and works well, but these are mostly day boats
used for cocktail cruises in small areas.
Refrigeration on a seagoing vessel would use a lot of battery
power, but if you have a generator on board, I guess it
doesn't matter.<br>The Electric Boat Association
publishes a Buyers' Guide every year that provies names of
companies which make stuff for electric boats. Others are

Bill - I don't have any experience with your
request, just some thoughts. It seems that you want your
electrical system to power a lot, refrig, etc. It would seem
to me that it sure would take a lot of batteries and
therefore weight that I don't think a 22 foot boat would
easily handle, along with a gas generator and fuel. But
then again, you would not have the weight of an
engine. You mention Elco - I think they are the best
source for answers to all of your questions. Paul

data you'd like to share with us. Crusing speed, top
speed range etc. I'm sure we'd all like to let you brag

I finially got some photos uploaded. I don't know
why they still say "0" by my album, but they are
there. These are in reference to my message # 20,
way-back last year. The hull and stopsides are awlgrip
paint. This spring I want to non-skid the decks anad add
some varnished teak trim. I just put it on a trailer
before Christmas and moved it home for the winter.
<br><br>It might interest some of you in knowing this is a
low budget yacht. I have less than $2,000 invested so
far, including a $300 trailer I had to purchase. It
took most of the summer getting it ready to use, but
it was worth it. My wife and i like leisurely
cruises down the Sassafras River. It fits us just
perfect.<br><br>My project over the winter is a 24 volt
go-cart.<br><br>Best wishes to everyone during the upcoming New
