Half Moon Bay is a disaster for EVs. As a tourist spot for people from the valley there should be way more DC fast chargers there, and there should also be a Tesla supercharger (but I won¡¯t hold my breath for that after this past week¡¯s news). At least there are more chargers in the Santa Cruz area¡

Half Moon Bay is yet another one of the reasons that I ended up buying a Kona, so I can drive all over the Bay Area without needing to recharge. After ten years of going to that town in my i-MiEV, it had again became an 'adventure', after years of reliable charging station availability there.
Even though there are many more stations listed in the town than in past years, their reliability sucks - just check out the PlugShare scores.
EA (by BofA) still shows their single CHAdeMO station inoperable, for months. EVgo used to be very reliable (and Mavericks restaurant has great crepes), but they've let that entire complex disintegrate in the last couple of years and are now showing everything is down. Each of the previously-reliable ChargePoint stations in town now has issues... and we now have more demand than ever... (sigh)
We're back to the old days, when venturing outside of one's round-trip range requires advance planning, with all options along the way identified. PlugShare is still our best friend.
Be sure to carry a portable EVSE with plenty of adapters, although I have yet to eat crow and approach a gas station with an extension cord in hand... ;-)

Tesla supercharger team axed
Tesla¡¯s roughly 58,000 Superchargers have set the standard for EV drivers the world over. Musk¡¯s decision to slow expansion will be felt most acutely in North America, where the network accounts for 74% of all ultra-fast chargers tracked by BloombergNEF. The company has consistently installed more ultra-fast chargers in North America than all other networks combined. The first quarter of the year was no exception: Tesla installed a record 3,680 Superchargers, while its competitors collectively installed fewer than half that number. Tesla¡¯s imminent slowdown may put a damper on the region¡¯s?. BNEF forecast in its?Long-Term Electric Vehicle?Outlook that there needs to be around 400,000 ultra-fast chargers in North America?to serve a fleet of 40 million battery-electric vehicles by 2030, and lay the foundation?for over 90 million EVs just five years later. Charging?is a??in Europe, where Tesla¡¯s slowdown won¡¯t be felt as strongly.?A total of 390 companies added more than 13,000 ultra-fast chargers in the first quarter, which was 11 times greater than Tesla¡¯s installations. Perhaps Musk is betting that the North American charging industry will look more like Europe¡¯s in the years to come, and isn¡¯t inclined to commit the capital required to keep growing the network at pace in an increasingly crowded market.

Making its stations suitable for non-Tesla EVs likely will necessitate installing longer cables for bigger pickups and SUVs. If Musk can realize his?robotaxi vision, stations may also need to integrate??or??technology. No matter what precipitated Musk¡¯s moves, the dialing back of Tesla¡¯s Supercharger ambitions adds to the already??around EVs in the?US. Automakers have no time to feel sorry for themselves having been left in the lurch soon after switching to Tesla¡¯s charging connector. The Ionna joint venture that??have set up to build at least 30,000 chargers needs?to get off the starting blocks quickly. And there are some reasons for optimism that new entrants can help fill the void, with more than 50 companies joining the sector after having won funding from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. Even if there may be some merit to streamlining in the face of increasing competition and in order to focus on robotaxis, the chaos surrounding Tesla¡¯s Supercharger operation is poised to ripple across the industry for months to come.

Tesla Charging Cable, Back-In Parking, and Charging Port Location
Back-in parking is far safer than going in forward into a parking spot. Many references, for example, randomly, -

It's a skill that all should have, and practice.
The length of the Tesla Supercharger cables is perfect for Teslas, even though I believe that Tesla was misguided in the charging port location because:
a) When at a curbside charging station the cable (if it even reaches) juts out into traffic and can be snagged by a bicycle and is a problem not just with Teslas but all cars that have their charging port on the driver's side.
b) Home charging means that the car has to be far enough from the wall for the driver's door to open, which consumes about three feet of unnecessary space in the garage, not to mention having to maneuver around the charge cord.
A charging port on the passenger side rear fender allows for easy curbside charging and a very short (3') charging cable to the EVSE at a home garage, and, most importantly, increases usable space between cars in a garage by about 3'. Ask me how I know.
How Tesla is going to deal with their short cables to support other cars without having adapters with cables will be 'interesting'.

I avoided
all of the technical discussion in my email reply to Max's

I would be happy to speak with you
about EV charging on Sunday.
While I don¡¯t have a Tesla, many of
our members do and I am familiar with their
charging network.? Several auto manufacturers have
agreed to participate with Tesla and make future
models compatible with the Tesla charging system
which is being branded as NACS (North America
Charging Standard).
Until those manufacturers start
integrating the NACS charging connector into their
EVs, there is an adapter that non-Tesla drivers
can use in the meanwhile.
It remains to be seen what other
charging station manufacturers will do.?
Eventually this will get sorted out just like the
VHS and Betamax video tape player conundrum did
several years ago.? Who knows, maybe in the future
NACS may become obsolete and replaced with a
wireless?charger system.
To further add to the current
confusing EV charging situation, there are 3
charging levels.
Level 1 uses the standard SAE J1772
plugs and delivers a slow and time consuming
charge from a 120 volt AC outlet.
Level 2 charging is significantly
faster and uses the same SAE connector from a 240
volt AC outlet.
Level 3 is completely different but
very fast.? It supplies DC power to the EV which
?can charge an EV in a mater of minutes.? However
while EV drivers can use a level 1 or level 2
charger at home, the huge amount of power used for
level 3 charging is only available at commercial
or industrial locations. ?
Also, to complicate matters further,
there are 3 somewhat incompatible Level 3 charging
standards.
Nissan uses the Chademo standard
although this ?is being phased out like Betamax
was.? Most other automakers like Ford, GM, VW,
Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota use the CCS standard.?
The third standard is Tesla. ?
Hopefully this brief tutorial will
give you some insight into the present situation
and why these multiple ¡°standards¡± make expansions
of the EV charging network a fairly complex and
challenging task.
While hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
are actually EVs, the price of the fuel and the
scarcity of fueling stations has turned this
alternative into a very small niche market,
despite the huge investment made by the state of
California to create the ¡°Hydrogen Highway¡±. ?
The internal combustion and diesel
vehicles are similarly challenged with 3 octane
levels and diesel - although drivers have become
accustomed to it over the years.
Other options for these vehicles
exist to a much smaller degree, such as natural
gas, propane, biodiesel and alcohol fuels like
ethanol and methanol.
So this comparison puts the multiple
EV charging standards into perspective.
The electric grid infrastructure
issue is a whole other bag of worms that I won¡¯t
get into here. ? There was an excellent article on
this topic I can send to you which is based on the
fact that Amazon has installed the largest
charging network in the United States - primary
for their own use. ? They discovered it was a lot
more expensive, difficult, and time consuming than
they expected.

I just had a Zoom meeting with Max Darrow who is a reporter from KPIX TV in San Francisco.? He contacted me through the "Contact Us" feature on our website requesting someone to comment on Gavin Newsom's recent announcement that the State of California will be investing a large amount of money to build up the public access EV Charging infrastructure.??

Max had several questions for me and he recorded the Zoom meeting.? Not sure what parts will actually be used for the interview that will be aired tonight 4-28-24 on KPIX TV News at 5 and 6 PM.
I avoided all of the technical discussion in my email reply to Max's original inquiry and kept it simple as Sybil advised.? I also mentioned the suggestion of "try before you buy" to encourage the EV curious viewers to contact a dealer or rental agency to test drive an EV to see if it would work for them.? Hopefully that message will survive the "cutting room floor".

Although your message re EV charging in general is very thorough and fascinating reading for me, ?I went back to your other email containing Max¡¯s specific question.
He basically wants a ¡°congratulations to Newsom - this will be a boon for current EV owners and help erase the range anxiety of those hesitant to purchase or lease a new or used EV
It will be the general public listening to/ watching CBS Bay Atea.? So hope you¡¯ll do the best sales pitch ever to get those ICE owners over to a GM, Ford, Hyundai or Kia dealer to test drive an EV!
Max will gain some detailed insights from your message to him, but keep it simple for the viewers
Make EV charging on the road sound easy and accessible - not complicated
Although mentioning that ___% on EV owners charge at home.? This extended system of EV chargers will benefit people traveling to go skiing, driving vacations, ?visiting distant relatives, etc

Thanks for contacting us. I would be happy to speak with you about EV charging on Sunday.
While I don¡¯t have a Tesla, many of our members do and I am familiar with their charging network.? Several auto manufacturers have agreed to participate with Tesla and make future models compatible with the Tesla charging system which is being branded as NACS (North America Charging Standard).
Until those manufacturers start integrating the NACS charging connector into their EVs, there is an adapter that non-Tesla drivers can use in the meanwhile.
It remains to be seen what other charging station manufacturers will do.? Eventually this will get sorted out just like the VHS and Betamax video tape player conundrum did several years ago.? Who knows, maybe in the future NACS may become obsolete and replaced with a wireless?charger system.
To further add to the current confusing EV charging situation, there are 3 charging levels.
Level 1 uses the standard SAE J1772 plugs and delivers a slow and time consuming charge from a 120 volt AC outlet.
Level 2 charging is significantly faster and uses the same SAE connector from a 240 volt AC outlet.
Level 3 is completely different but very fast.? It supplies DC power to the EV which ?can charge an EV in a mater of minutes.? However while EV drivers can use a level 1 or level 2 charger at home, the huge amount of power used for level 3 charging is only available at commercial or industrial locations. ?
Also, to complicate matters further, there are 3 somewhat incompatible Level 3 charging standards. Nissan uses the Chademo standard although this ?is being phased out like Betamax was.? Most other automakers like Ford, GM, VW, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota use the CCS standard.? The third standard is Tesla. ?
Hopefully this brief tutorial will give you some insight into the present situation and why these multiple ¡°standards¡± make expansions of the EV charging network a fairly complex and challenging task.
While hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are actually EVs, the price of the fuel and the scarcity of fueling stations has turned this alternative into a very small niche market, despite the huge investment made by the state of California to create the ¡°Hydrogen Highway¡±. ?
The internal combustion and diesel vehicles are similarly challenged with 3 octane levels and diesel - although drivers have become accustomed to it over the years.
Other options for these vehicles exist to a much smaller degree, such as natural gas, propane, biodiesel and alcohol fuels like ethanol and methanol.
So this comparison puts the multiple EV charging standards into perspective.
The electric grid infrastructure issue is a whole other bag of worms that I won¡¯t get into here. ? There was an excellent article on this topic I can send to you which is based on the fact that Amazon has installed the largest charging network in the United States - primary for their own use. ? They discovered it was a lot more expensive, difficult, and time consuming than they expected.
