Duncan, Hi and thanks. My unfamiliarity with my new MacBook has been overcome with your assistance.? PSUD2 (build 75) runs.? Hurray!? However, I cannot yet achieve usable results.? Mathematics is not my issue _ I have for example calculated the Vlaws and Vfacs for several non-listed diodes (but not confident to upload them to the data base.)?? I can still exceed rectifier max voltages!? Partly (maybe) because the programme as downloaded appears to allow only one rectifier block at a time e.g. i do not know how to simulate a CLC filter let alone display chained sections as shown elsewhere on the net. I'd have several 'rookie' questions to ask to make any further progress - but how much are you up for tutoring cats in the use of your programme? BTW do you have a pay-channel for your time and expertise and/or do you know of anyone who does the sort of design for monobloc PSU given a bunch of in /out parameters? (I may have said i have bought quite a lot of very expensive components over the years... transformer, ASC caps 10 and 50?F/1200V and the orginal design (Mr Walton Mk2) used the now truly discontinued Plitron 20H/400mA (!) and 10H/150mA for SE 8W 300B/6SN7. Hello Duncan (and everyone else),
great tool this PSUD2 - I have been using it for years.? ?Thanks for making it free! I have a query about swinging chokes.? ?One of the webpages (I think its home) you say: "Filter configurations: Simple C filter, C/R/C, C/L/C and LC (swinging choke)." Then in the Help pages, under "Program Limitations" - "Inductance" - it says: "The value of the inductor used in choke power supplies does not vary with DC current, all simulations use a static value. In a real world scenario, the value of the inductor would decrease as the current is increased." I can't find any way of making a choke "swinging" - so I presume this is a feature not yet available - but your intention is to add it at some point? thanks Richard |

Hi Richard,
It would certainly be possible to put something in, however making it suitable for public consumption would be a whole different story. Putting in a series of parameters to show the inductance variation with current takes it way outside the easy to use simple designer application. I'd consider a different tool for this purpose. For something like this (and I appreciate there is a need), I've used Magnetics Designer with SPICE software before. A link to the product is ->? Regards, Duncan |

Firstly I was merely pointing out the apparent contradiction on your Web pages, which you might want to correct.? And I wasn't sure if I was just not looking in the right place for swinging chokes....
Agreed about the extra complexity in the man/machine interface,? which might be unwelcome for some users.? However there is a further problem, which i have just discovered having been simulating a swinging choke supply using PSUD2.? Its a bit of a faff having to change the inductance for each change of load, but it is at least doable.
The difficulty I found is that data for swinging chokes does not appear to be available beyond two values of current and inductance.?? For instance,? 20/200mA, 20/5H.? The question then arises....what does the curve look like in between those two points?? Is it linear?? If not what is it?
I did a lot of Google searches, and turned up zilch.?? Modelling these chokes will be impossible without that data.
Plainly if you have a choke in your hands, you can, in principle,? measure the curve,? though the test rig could be tricky. But I want to design a supply before I go looking for parts.....

The curve isn't linear, but that's not even the worst part of the problem. As the choke core magnetises, there is some residual field which results in a different curve as the current is coming down again. There are a few references out there, however this looks like a good page to get an idea of the issue ->? If you have a look through that, you'll see why I've always been reluctant to pursue anything more than an idealised inductor. Regards, Duncan |

I just downloaded and installed this build 75 and on startup I get an error: Rectifier not found in TXMLRectList::RectObject(). Press OK to ignore and risk data corruption. Press Abort to kill the program. Pressing either kills the program. The old v2.0.2 build 41 works ok on the same pc, and the build 75 has installed to a different folder Thanks Simon |

As Windows security has tightened up, it was necessary to move the rectifiers and examples to the recommended area which is the user's appdata folder. If you are getting a message on startup, it means the rectifier cannot be loaded for the default PSU. Unless you have made changes to default.psu, this will be the 1N4007.? Using File Explorer, could you please navigate down from C:\Users to find the following folder ? ? ? Hi all Recently I installed version 2.20 build 74, which surprisingly was made simultaneously at the 4 users on my PC. My PSUD2 installation didn't work on the 3 ordinary users and gave exactly the same error message as Simon in every case (at startup). Duncan mentions the folder:? C:\Users\<yourname>\AppData\Roaming\psud\rectifiers The cause of the problem is that the mentioned "rectifiers" folder is empty under each of the 3 ordinary users.The rectifier files is located exclusively under the administrator version of the "rectifiers" folder.

I've carried out some changes to PSUD2 to fix issues with non-admin user installs, thanks for the input.
Instead of the installer trying to put example and rectifier files in the user's application data folder, it now installs them into the program files folder. When PSUD starts up, it checks the application data folder and populates it from the program area if the files are not there. I believe this now reflects correct installer and program behaviour within the current Windows model. The new build 76 is in the files area ->?/g/duncanampspsud/files/psud2_windows No new Mac build as the Mac is not affected by this installation issue. Regards, Duncan |

PSUD2 Build 77 (Mac) released
A revised Mac version has been released to address a user interface performance issue when operating Dark mode. This should now operate correctly, along with better handling of changes in theme.
