Re-4: [direwolf] Reporting to aprs-is shows no digipeaters?

Hello David,
?
direwolf is started by the SDR software OpenWebRX and is fed via the sdr, not via an audio device.?I have no influence on the start parameters. I can't check the entries in the log right now because I can't restart the SDR at the moment.
?
The process runs with the following parameters:
?
direwolf -c /tmp/openwebrx_direwolf_140086741222320.conf -r 48000 -t 0 -q d -q h
?
Content of the configuration file:
?
ACHANNELS 1
ADEVICE stdin null

CHANNEL 0
MYCALL DB0DAN
MODEM 1200

KISSPORT 35015
AGWPORT off

IGSERVER euro.aprs2.net

I just noticed the following in the log:

Hello Hiermur,

sry, I thought you meant I should post my concern here. Groups.io was not responding yesterday, hence the double post.

Ok.. got it.? Please close that Github issue as I highly doubt this is a bug in Direwolf but more of a misunderstanding or configuration error.

The receiver running Direwolf is DB0DAN. The receipt of DB0HWI was received from DB0DAN. I had mentioned the entry from the log as an example. The last entry of DB0HWI on aprs.fi is 03/06/2023. But this was still reported by ui-view32.

According to aprs.fi ( ) , DB0DAN is indeed running Direwolf yet it also shows Last status of "UI-View32 V2.03" which is odd.? Next, this aprs.fi page shows:

?? 2023-03-23 06:02:31 PDT (2d 4h42m ago)

That's two days ago which makes me think something is misconfigured on Direwolf or your audio levels for your sound device connected to your RX radio is not hearing any APRS packets.? Can you copy/paste into this email thread:

?? - the command line options of how your starting direwolf
?? - the startup output of Direwolf and say some of the additional log lines

Hello Hiermu,

You first created a Git issue ( ) asking this question which I responded to.? Then you have posted two separate emails to the Direwolf group asking the same question.? Here was my last response in that Git Issue thread:
--
As of 3/24/23 @ 8:00am PST, I do see your station on APRS.FI showing as a Digipeater:

Looking at the "raw" view, there are at least three other beacons being consistently received by your station and Igated to aprs.fi.
--

That said, can you elaborate on what detail is missing that you think should be there on aprs.fi?

I use direwolf under OpenWebRX and have a question about APRS reporting via aprs-is. In contrast to the previously used software (ui-view32), no digipeaters are reported. As a result, no more information is available for the VHF Propagation Map () :-(

For example, the following station was received by OpenWebRX:

DO0HWI>APMI04,DB0PCH,DM0ADA,WIDE2*:;DL0HWI *241058z5353.23N/01128.30EK145.225MHz t000 R10K DARC Clubstation OV V13

But it doesn't appear on aprs.fi and vhf.dxview.org. Mobile stations are reported.

Are there direwolf filters at work that suppress the reception of digipeaters?

Re: "APRS Telemetry Toolkit"

By The Way:
In the README.md:

pi@raspi1:~/Adafruit-Raspberry-Pi-Python-Code $ cat README.md
# Adafruit's Legacy Raspberry Pi Python Code Library

## What happened to all the Raspberry Pi Python code!?

In the past this repository held all of the Raspberry Pi related Python code
that Adafruit published.? For example code to talk to sensors like the BMP085,
TCS34725, and other hardware like character LCD plates.? Over time we found it
difficult to manage so much code in a single repository, and couldn't easily put
the code on Python's package index for simple installation.? Now we've broken out
all of the previous Python code into individual GitHub repositories, and we've
loaded all of these repositories on the [Python package index](https://pypi.python.org/pypi)
so they can be installed with `pip` (note that pip won't install example code so for most users
it's recommended to install from source).

## Where do I find the new Raspberry Pi Python code?

**All** of the Python libraries now support Python 3.x and a wide variety of Linux/Single Board Computers.

This library has been deprecated in favor of <a href="https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Blinka">our python3 Blinka library</a>. We have replaced all of the libraries that use this repo with CircuitPython libraries that are Python3 compatible, and support a <a href="https://circuitpython.org/blinka" rel="nofollow">wide variety of single board/linux computers</a>!</p>
<p>Visit <a href="https://circuitpython.org/blinka" rel="nofollow">https://circuitpython.org/blinka</a> for more information</p>
<p>CircuitPython has <a href="https://circuitpython.readthedocs.io/projects/bundle/en/latest/drivers.html" rel="nofollow">support for almost 200 different drivers</a>, and a? as well as <a href="https://learn.adafruit.com/circuitpython-on-any-computer-with-ft232h" rel="nofollow">FT232H support for Mac/Win/Linux</a>!</p>

## But I **need** the old code!? What can I do?

Don't worry the old Adafruit Raspberry-Pi Python code can be found in the
[legacy branch](https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-Raspberry-Pi-Python-Code/tree/legacy) of this repository.? This is a snapshot of the old code before it
was refactored into individual libraries. **Note this legacy code will not be
maintained!**

I can't download the file "git clone https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-Raspberry-Pi-Python-Code"

do you know why?

maybe I'm not the right path, I'm following the pdf procedure of APRS with a raspberry Pi I'm using

Re: CBEACON DTI error

Sounds easy enough, especially if you use the same time criteria.
If the script's 75 mile / 30 minute check returns "empty" (nothing heard in the last 30 minutes), delete the file.

Why make it more complicated than that?

Re: CBEACON DTI error

Thanks again Rob,

Yes, that is exactly the path I'm following.

I'm thinking I need to add in a routine to delete that file after n minutes (say 60) if no new DX heard.? Shouldn't be too difficult as the script is already filtering on stations over 75 miles heard within the last 30 minutes, so timediff is already determined.

Re: CBEACON DTI error

Glad you got it working.
As for the RF alert, have the DW log parser creating a file in the DW folder "if the 75 mile condition is met".
It could be as simple as creating/deleting the file in accordance with your conditions, or you could write content (for instance "call and distance" of the DX station).

The DW script would check for that file and append ' potential DX' (note leading space may be needed for formatting) to your beacon.
If the file contains call and distance, that could be part of the appended information: ' potential DX: {Call} heard xxx miles away'
If the file does not exist, nothing is appended.

Rob KB8RCO

Re: CBEACON DTI error

Thanks Rob, that worked.

I made a very dumb error in such a simple script that didn't help the situation, but rectified now!

I also passed a position packet for MM0NBW-2 so it's now on aprs.fi.

I've got another script working that parses the DW log every 5 minutes, filters out any stations over 75 miles, pastes that into an email and sends.? The next step I'm working on is triggering a status message on RF to alert to potential DX.

Thanks for your help.? Very much appreciated.

Re: Direwolf web dashboard

Yes, very interesting indeed. I look forward to its further development, such as populating the real-time monitor with most recent traffic at the top.

Re: CBEACON DTI error

Will do it tomorrow morning.? Thank you! ?

So, the first character was a lower case 't'.
Try something like: print(">test text") to see if the error goes away.

Re: CBEACON DTI error

Thanks Robert.

I'll have a look at the text string and see if I can make inroads there.

Best,
Craig - MM0NBW?

Re: CBEACON DTI error

Thanks all.

The python is as simple as print("test text")

Nothing more.??

It was sent from MM0NBW-2 with no location beacon, so won't appear on aprs.fi (as I understand it).? At this point I was solely concerned with getting text (which is not telemetry or WX info) out via RF.?

I'll give it another try tomorrow.?

Your help is very much appreciated!

Craig- MM0NBW

Re: CBEACON DTI error

You didn't post the actual text that was sent.
I didn't see it on aprs.fi under your callsign.? What SSID did you send it with?
?? I looked at -6 which said it was Direwolf, but packets in "raw"

The MOST important things about the infocmd is the first character in the field.
If you just start with text and the? first letter is A-S you should see this error.
Most of the toolkit examples start with a perl script that has "T#" and then the sequential number for telemetry data, then add more text.? The "T" indcates Telemetry, so it does not start with A-S.
If you aren't starting with a perl script, then you python script has to account for that.

Since your CBEACON doresn't appear to provide a position report, just the comment, I would consider this a status, the very first character should be a '>'
