Re: Direwolf and Vara HF

Thanks David.

That is what I had in mind to follow, but the more I am digging into this it just doesn't seem to be a good idea. I am also having considerable problems getting VARA HF to work in Wine or Crossover as well. Might have to find a way to bring up my spare HF rig to handle a VARA node.

Thank you sir!

Chris,

Are you intending to have two applications running and using the same soundcard?? One QSOs using one mode could go long and then the other mode might want to kick in for sending a beacon, make an outgoing connection, etc.

Next, I'm reading and while this seems like an interesting paper experiment, I don't see how this will work in the real world.? Every transmitter in the world isn't going to be perfectly on frequency.? Some stations will over-modulate and splatter beyond their frequency "slot".? There should be plenty of spectrum for different modes to have their own area but we all know getting global consensus and agreement is almost impossible.?
I fear everyone on these bands will suffer with co-channel interference from this "creative design" and trying to get people to "fix" or stop doing this will become very difficult.?

Re: Direwolf and Vara HF

Here is a writeup from Red PE1RRR on how he's configured his packet and VARA modems. He's using QtSoundmodem for packet, but the steps are basically the same. There are a number of stations running the same setup.

Hope that helps.

Direwolf and Vara HF

Hello Group!

I searched to see if this has already been answered without luck.
I have the Yaesu 710 and it handles two BPQ32 nodes on a linux server. The dial is set for 14.1023 USB/(14.105 LSB)
The direwolf channels are:

CHANNEL 2
MYCALL KO4YAW-7
MODEM 300 900:1100 D
TXDELAY 40
TXTAIL 40
PTT RIG 2 localhost:4534

and

CHANNEL 3
MYCALL KO4YAW-16
MODEM 300 1900:2100 D
TXDELAY 40
TXTAIL 40
PTT RIG 2 localhost:4534

I would like to setup a VARA HF node that uses the same frequency the radio is on but a different center. I read someplace that I could use the 'empty' space between the 1000 and the 2000 center.

Can anyone share any tips on how to set this up?

Thanks,
-Chris

Martin is correct and on that page, it links to a way to search all posts.? For your ask, search for the word "fonts":

I've searched Google, prior to posting here, and did see the "Text on Black" suggestion, but I don't see it in my version as per their suggestion. Maybe it moved or was eliminated?

Re: Setting up for HF

It works!? Figured it out.? Computer setting, my error of course.? Thanks again to all for the help.

Re: Setting up for HF

Once again, I am getting close!? When I press F1 it throws rig into Xmit, tho audio comes out of my computer speakers.? Here is what I am showing on startup.? I just have to figure out how to adjust Direwolf to only use the USB choices.? Thank you for your help!

Re: Setting up for HF

Yeah, COM6.? Somewhere in the Soundmodem PTT config it should also show what pin it's using on the comport, whether RTS, DTR, or both.? Here's Direwolf's PTT section, just adjust one of the lines accordingly and delete the # to enable it, or add a new line.? If the radio immediately goes into transmit when you start Direwolf, stop Direwolf and change the PTT line to what works.? I had one setup where that happened, so I had to use some variation of inverted RTS or DTR or something, but it worked.

Re: Setting up for HF

When I hit send, it indeed does put rig into transmit with Soundmodem.? PTT port is COM6 in Soundmodem.? Would I use that in Direwolf?? I tried Direwolf with aprs and when I monitor it sounds good,, just not throwing rig into transmit.? So, in my feeble mind, I feel I'm close....

OK, once again I think I am very close.? Making noise, putting rig into transmit, but nothing going out.? Have to configure speakers/mic.? I'll get it yet!

Thanks for help folks.

Re: Multiple Sound cards on Raspberry Pi 1200 / 9600.

Various action have been taken:

  1. Followed Jeff's recommendation and I am running two direwolf config and both work (vhf/uhf) at 1200 but it receive an error on the UHF direwolf:
    • Increasing the sample rate should improve decoder performance.
    • Using /dev/hidraw1 GPIO 3 for channel 0 PTT control.
    • Disabled AGW network client port.
    • Bind failed with error: 98
    • Address already in use
    • Some other application is probably already using port 8001.
    • Try using a different port number with KISSPORT in the configuration file.
    • Ready to accept KISS TCP client application 0 on port 8003 ...
  2. When UHF port is configure to 9600 the PTT would not work (not sure if its BPQ32 configuration) but if configure to 1200 will work fine.

Here are the config for the two instance of direwolf, as recommended by John only PTT CM108 and the -d no output of both vhf/uhf.

Re: RPi cron not working for me

Hi David

Here is the latest log as you suggested. This is the cron session at the one minute interval. Everything appears normal but I am no expert.? Direwolf is not running, since 'pidof direwolf' returns nothing.

Mar 01 13:01:01 aprs-digi CRON[5123]: pam_unix(cron:session): session opened for user btw(uid=1000) by (uid=0)
Mar 01 13:01:01 aprs-digi CRON[5124]: (btw) CMD (/home/btw/dw-start.sh >/dev/null 2>&1)
Mar 01 13:01:31 aprs-digi CRON[5123]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user btw

Re: Setting up for HF

Sorry, I meant RTS, not RTL :)

Re: Setting up for HF

That sounds normal for 1200-baud or even 300-baud transmission time, for an APRS beacon.? VARA is a lot longer by comparison (I have VARA APRS running here also). What method of PTT are you using with Soundmodem, maybe RTL or DTR on whichever comport?? Is sounds like Soundmodem is working like it should, but curious what it uses for PTT for your Yaesu.? If you do use Direwolf, I imagine you wouldn't need Hamlib, just the same RTL/DTR config as Soundmodem.

Re: Setting up for HF

3 seconds maybe when sending a beacon on aprs.? When using VARS it's more likely to be 8-10 seconds.? And no interface, direct from the computer USB port with the virtual comm ports.? (That's how I use VARS, Winlink, FT8, etc.)

Hello Benson,

When you say "sudo crontab", what are you thinking this command should do?? Are you trying to edit the tasks of things cron is supposed to do?? That would actually be done using the command "crontab -e" for your "abc" user and if you want to do it for the root user with root permissions, you'd do "sudo crontab -e".? Maybe you are expecting this command it will run all scheduled jobs right then and there?? That's not what it will do.

Maybe there are errors about starting the dw-start.sh script.? Look at the cron logs with:

?? sudo journalctl -u cron
