When I configure and run direwolf, I see packets being reported typically with audio levels = 2 to 4 ( e.g. 4(2/1). This is quite different from what is reported using the same Signalink and Windows 7 (typically audio level = 50 to 60). What's this mean? Is the Linux report different?

Well, every OS is different in it's mixer settings.? What radio are you using and how is the Signalink connected to that radio?? I assume the RX knob on the front of the Signalink is turned to 100% volume?
?The radio (FT-857D) is connected via the 6 pin DIN data port on the rear panel of the radio, same as in Win 7. The settings of the Signalink are the same as for the Windows 7 ?setup, i.e. the RX knob is midrange. I still ?do not understand the Linux audio levereport format. Is this supposed to be the same as the Win version or diffel rent?

I have set the playback (output) level using Alsamixer, but I cannot get alsamixer to show that the record capabilty exists, let alone adjust it,

It's been a long time since I've used a Signalink but I have a US Interface Navigator which is somewhat similar in that there isn't a Microphone level set via the electronic mixer.? The capture levels Is all controlled by the front knobs.? With that said, I believe alsamixer will show the microphone.? Try the following:

?? 1. Start up alsamixer
?? 2. Hit the F6 key and select the "CODEC [USB Audio CODEC]" soundcard
?? 3. Hit the F4 key to see the "capture" controls"

hiiting the F6 key does NOT make any recording setting available in Alsamixer.
?even though packets are clearly being received in direwolf. How can I know if the input audio level sensitivity is OK? How do I fix alsamixer?

If all else fails, you might want to check out the JP2 jumper on the Signalink:

If I want to add a second SDR dongle for UHF on 445.925Mhz. on the the same RPi for Rx-only Igate.

How do I set it up on sdr.conf?

Or should I run another instance of direwolf with a different sdr1.conf with CHANNEL 1 to select second dongle and use a different callsign SSID.

Re: Periodic audio device statistics

Great news. It's working!

I installed the Gnome Alsa Mixer as suggested by Patrick. I had to check the "Record" box and the audio level jumped up. I adjusted the audio level (was way too high) and it is now decoding.

There must be a way to change this setting from the command line? Maybe the documentation should include this.

Thanks very much to Patrick and David. I doubt I would have got it going on my own. I've been working on this for weeks, the bulk of the things I've tried (and didn't work) are not in this thread.

I'll restate how I corrected the original problem I posted of the Periodic Audio Statistics not showing in the terminal...

In my configuration file I had "ADEVICE - plughw:1,0". Once I removed the dash, as suggested by David, the statistics started showing. Also this changed the what Direwolf showed as my device for receive when it is started.

Thanks again to everybody for the help.

Randy

Re: Periodic audio device statistics

I loaded the Gnome ALSA mixer on my Pi, as I'm more comfortable with a GUI. Some of the input sliders have a check box marked "Rec." (Record). Perhaps that is cause of your issue.

Re: Periodic audio device statistics

David,

Okay. We're not there yet, but we're getting somewhere.

?

I removed the dash from the ADEVICE line and now the terminal indicates "Audio device for both receive and transmit: plughw:1,0 ?(channel 0)". I don't know where the dash came from. I thought all I did was remove the pound sign at the beginning of the line. Thanks for that tip. I wouldn't have found that in a million years.

?

Removing the dash also allowed the periodic audio statistics to work. I can now see that the audio level coming in to Direwolf always shows zero. I tried various audio levels with the squelch open and also with a capacitor in line. I have an audio isolation transformer I tried in addition. I tried playing the weather channel which also always indicated the audio level at zero.

?

Beatiful audio comes from the output port of the sound card. I can adjust the level of the audio using the mixer in Linux. I am using Alsamixer to adjust the level, so that was already in my Pi. There is no feedback in the audio at any level. I don't think the quality of the audio is a concern right now. More the complete lack of it reaching Direwolf.

?

I also modified the modem line as you suggested.

?

I am running "Raspbian Jessie With Pixel" dated 1/11/2017. It is what is currently on the Raspberry Pi web site.

?

I have a degree in electronics and over thirty years professional (and amateur) experience in that area. I designed and built my own 440 repeater controller from scratch using a basic stamp 2 as the microcontroller. I wrote my own code for the stamp. You can get as technical as you like about electronics and radios.

?

I would say I am more of a beginner in Linux, though I have worked with it occasionally over the years.

?

I have a pretty good parts supply so I can add the LED when I get a few minutes. I don't think that is a big deal if the audio level coming in is zero.

?

I had to click view source again to read your post but that's no big deal.

I was advised to include my call. You may have already seen it in my configuration file.

Re: Telemetry error msg

I'm responding to my own post for an update.... This is a portable telemetry system, so ended up getting recommended GPS unit.

So, now implement TBEACON with compressed location using COMMENTCMD. Shows up fine in findu.com raw data. I insert that data into my server database event_log table.

Looking in?symbol.c I see that Ambulance is the default?symbol with ssid="-1"? and no SYMBOL specified in the beacon config.

I gather there are a lot of QA issues with these also they are very picky with memory cards. I used a 32GB class 10 Integral brand with mine.?

I just wanted to try something different to a Pi!

Hi Dan,

I discovered that the GPIO pins are not the same as the Pi and have to be defined in a FEX file. I do have the GPIO working now by creating 4 GPIO ports then using GPIO3 for PTT on pin22 and GPIO4 for DCD on pin 15. So far I have it driving LED via a 2k2 resistor.

Here are my working notes -

Hello Randy,

?
I was finally able to see what you said by clicking "view source".

Yeah.. sorry about thast.? I think there is something wrong with the new K9 Email reader for Android.? Nice work about thinking to looking at the HTML source to see the plain text email!

6. Pulse audio should have been removed when I followed the above document. I wouldn't know how to confirm that.

What Linux distribution have you installed on your Raspberry Pi?? I would assume Rasbian Jessie version?? If so, it won't come with PulseAudio so you're ok there.

7. I'm using a radio shack scanner that performed perfectly as a receive only igate on my laptop PC for months.

If you connect it to another computer, can that computer record the audio like you'd expect?

8. As warned about in the document, I am not using a USB hub.

Ok.

9. When I put audio into the microphone jack on the sound card (using either a microphone or my scanner), it comes out the speaker jack of the sound card and it sounds very good. I can vary the volume levels using the mixer in Linux so the card is communicating with Linux on some level.

That doesn't sound right.? It shouldn't instantly and automatically play the sound it hears or you risk feedback.? Check your mixer settings using "alsamixer" from the "alsa-utils" package.? You can install that with:

?? apt-get update
?? apt-get install alsa-utils

11. I have attached my configuration file and the text copied from the Direwolf terminal when I start the program.

In your config file, you have:

ADEVICE - plughw:1,0

When you should have "ADEVICE? plughw:1,0"?? (notice the missing -"

--

Instead of having:

MODEM 1200

I recommend the following for the Raspberry Pi:

?? MODEM 1200 E+ /3

--

If you can manage to get an LED and a resistor, I highly recommend to setup a DCD indicator (lights up when Direwolf hears a packet):

#pin18 (GPIO 24) - (cathode) LED (anode) - 270ohm resistor - 3.3v
DCD GPIO 13

--

Unless you plan on using the TCP-KISS port or the AGWPE port, I would disable them with

AGWPORT 0
KISSPORT 0

--

One thing that is suspicious to me is that the Direwolf terminal shows "stdin" rather than my sound card as "device for receive".

This is due to the "-" in the ADEVICE line above.? Remove that as recommended above and I think you'll start hearing packets.

Re: Periodic audio device statistics

David,

I was finally able to see what you said by clicking "view source".

I have spent a lot of time on this and have read the documentation...over and over and over again. I have read many other threads. I've tried many things. I've exhaustively done my homework. I know how forums work. I wouldn't bother you but I don't know where else to look for an answer anymore. I'm here because I am desperate.

I have answered most of your questions previously in this thread. It seems like I'm just chasing my tail here. Not that I don't appreciate the help, the forum (Yahoo) just doesn't seem to be very efficient. I really don't feel like typing everything over again just to add more clutter to this thread...but here goes...

1. I am setting up a receive-only igate. No transmit.
2. I am using a Syba USB sound card. It indicates CMedia CM119 on the package. This sound card is recommended in the document I list here in #5.
3. I have tried putting an isolation transformer and also a capacitor to block the 5 volts at the sound card input, but it did not help.
4.? I am running version 1.3
5. I've been following what has been done before in the document at this link...

6. Pulse audio should have been removed when I followed the above document. I wouldn't know how to confirm that.
7. I'm using a radio shack scanner that performed perfectly as a receive only igate on my laptop PC for months.

10. When I type "arecord -l", it lists my C-Media card as "card 1".
11. I have attached my configuration file and the text copied from the Direwolf terminal when I start the program.

One thing that is suspicious to me is that the Direwolf terminal shows "stdin" rather than my sound card as "device for receive".

Again, thanks for your help.
