Yes, I am intimately familiar with the APRS message packet format.? The question was if anyone recalls what IGate software had a buggy version that was replacing the open curly brace with a null character.

An open curly bracket followed by 1-5 alphanumeric characters.?

The closing curly bracket would appear to be incorrect. So it may be a matter of implementation differences that cause some gateways to accept those messages and some to reject them.
