Dave: I never thought of doing a digipeater - much easier than 2 x PI and all the leads!?
But the fact that the Pac-comm wont bi-direction communicate with a known working PI+dirwolf+paracon (that talks to another of the same) suggests that my pac-comm unit is deaf - the PI can see my outgoing messages OK, but I cant see the generated replies being accepted.....
I need some free hours and the 'scope.? I will let you know how things go.
