To follow up this discussion about using inexpensive Chinese radios
for packet is *bad*, another user sent me these two excellent
articles giving empirical details of why using radios using the
RDA1846 radio chips won't work well:
??
? ? ? and
??
Please note that these documents are using asserted PTT.? Any packet
testing results using VOX would be substantially WORSE.

Scott,
Digipeating on the Baofeng is fast becoming a failed experiment
for me. Luckily my antenna is inside a building covered in stucco?
over wire. The signal is not heard very far and AFAICT, there are
no other repeaters functioning in the area. I am looking for a
replacement for the soundcard that will not require VOX or just
turn it into an igate. I would like to find out why I have have
packets out on beacon, but not digipeat.
Thanks for your input.

Please do not use Baofeng VOX on APRS (or any other digital
mode). The built-in VOX delay is not adjustable and is rather
long. This means when you transmit, once the data frame has
been sent, your TX will remain on the air for the delay. Other
stations will hear the end of your data frame and will then
transmit, but your station is still on the air, so it will
interfere with their data. This is a bad thing, and we hear it
all too often on APRS. I wish they would stop selling those
cables!
Also, Baofeng radios have notoriously bad turn around times
from TX to RX. They are very poor candidates for digital
operations. Some work OK, others do not work at all.?
