Back in the day, DIGIpeating and/or node hopping used intermediate stations to get to an end destination.? They were identified by their CALLSIGNs-SSIDs.? The fact (or maybe it was a change) that the CALLSIGN-SSID was not verified in any way (particularly format), gave options for non-CALLSIGNs or ALIASes.
At least that was how it was explained to me - way back when.

I thought it was treated as an ALIAS. WIDE* is not a callsign format. ?
