As a builder of products that interface to the Pi 2 and Pi 3 (and one that will go with the original Pi line), I have tried several boards that claim Pi 2 GPIO compatibility and they invariably fail.? The Pi 3 is pretty capable.?
Another thing to consider is whether amateur radio related packages are being actively ported and maintained for a given OS and hardware.? Many applications are dependent on the availability of hardware that may need OS support.
If you are a developer and comfortable modifying open source projects to your favorite hardware flavor of the day, this is a hobby for experimenters, so have at it and share your results with the rest of the community.
