Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
Here we are on the banjo end: Now I am looking for suggestions on how to mount the motor. This end seems friendlier to utilize I just need ideas for mounting the motor. Obviously I could add a pulley

Stepper size for small dividing head? #ESI
Hi, I¡¯m finishing up one copied digital project (Arduino-controlled lathe motor speed controller) and am nearly ready to wire up on another (wood lathe RELS), and have an extra, cheap Nano copy in

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
Actually now that you mention it I remember that is what it's called. My south bend gear box and gear assembly probably has one but I've never had to do anything there since the gear change levers do

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
If the term "banjo" is new to you, I have always known the pivoting slotted arm that the change wheels are mounted to as the "banjo". It may be a simple slotted pivoting bar or more but that is the

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
Basically yes. Replace the gear on the end of your leadscrew (or if you have one gearbox) with a timing belt pulley. Mount the stepper on the banjo and drive the screw. On my machine I drive 2:1. 3Nm

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
Richard, I do not understand what you are saying, are you referring to the gear box banjo? Just replacing a drive gear with a stepper motor? Ralph

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
I still question why the banjo is not an option Richard

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
Hi Charlie, Nice job on yours. Ralph's initial problem is finding a vertical surface on which to mount the motor that allow the motor shaft to be perfectly in line with the lead screw. Hence the

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
Thanks Charlie and John, now of course I am "thinking" about the bench top and "thinking" it would be a interesting project to build a concrete bench top. Hopefully I can contain myself and get my

Ralph, Of course, it all depends upon how much torque you need, but I direct-mounted mine on my 7 x 14 mini-lathe. -- Regards, Charlie New Jersey, USA *LAW OF ANNOYANCE: When working on a project, if

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
I am "thinking about building up the bench top. At least 3/4" if not 1-1/2". I do not know how thick/heavy the current bench top is possible 3/4". I grabbed the 72" cabinet from Lowes as a close out

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
With respect to your lathe I'd make 3 mounting posts. Say about 1" long. You will put them on the end casting in a rough triangle arrangement. You could use a counter bore to reference the holes in

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
At the moment my lathe is not fastened to the bench top, to use a off mounted motor the lathe would have to be fastened down to the bench top. Ralph [email protected]> wrote:

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
Thanks John, that is what I am looking for. No issues with mounting the motor off the lathe? I need to get a 3/4"-8 ACME bushing or pulley, don't know if right hand or left hand thread at the moment.

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
This is what I did with the Gingery Lathe. Been like that for 13 years I think. Pulley's are 1:1 with a 10 TPI ACME lead screw I made on the South Bend.

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
You have to look at the torque requirements of your system and then decide. Even pulleys with 1:1 do allow easier mounting but the costs are higher. I milled an adaptor that fit on the lead screw

Re: Suggestions for mounting stepper Z #MODS
Depends on your leadscrew pitch and the size of your stepper and the size of the machine. Which machine are you putting it on? I would suggest you put the banjo back on the lathe and take a look at

I was wondering about speed reduction from using pulleys. Would mounting direct to lead screw work? Might take some ugly mounting jig. Ralph
