Moonlight Serenade Dance January 14, 2023
#dinner
#dance
Our next Moonlight Serenade dance is January 14; one month away. Even though it is only the middle of December, if you are ready to commit to being at that dance, now would be a good time to advise your meal choices. I will be out of town between Christmas and New Years, so time will be tight to get all the seating arranged and orders in to the caterer by the 9th of January so they have time to work their magic. Anything done before then will move us further along and help accommodate your preferences. The entrée choices for this dance are Beef Short Ribs or Cod. Accompaniments for both entrees include parslied red potatoes and broccoli blend vegetable; salad of mixed greens & vegetables w/balsamic dressing; honey wheat rolls, and cheese cake dessert. Please remember to advise of any dietary restrictions. The music will be Sonoran Swing Band who we all enjoyed last March. The theme will be Out of Africa, and it’s always exciting to see how Kathy Litzenberger decorates for these themes. The cost for guest couples is $85, and remember to advise guests that our formal/semi formal dress code is strictly enforced; jackets for men; jeans will be rejected at the door. Soft drinks are provided but it is BYOB for anything else. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. -- Moonlight Serenade Joy Kosterman, Membership Chair (360) 903-4930 1357 Leisure World, Mesa 85206 MoonlightserenadeLW@...

January ACJS Jazz Party, January 15th
RIVER ROAD RAMBLERS JAZZ BAND The Arizona Classic Jazz Society will be entertained by the River Road Ramblers Jazz Band from Tucson on Sunday, January 15, 1 - 4 p.m. The band is led by Trombonist Richard Cook, who will be accompanied by Zac Johnson (Clarinet), Denny Schreffler (Cornet), Evan Dain (Banjo), Marco Rosano (Bass), and Bob Kruse (Drums). Their jazzy style is always danceable. The band released a new CD of “Classic Ragtime” with music from 1905 - 1914 and many of the members have been playing at a new jazz venue in Tucson, the Century Room of Hotel Congress. The Trad Jazz series there is on Wednesdays. The Hotel itself makes a visit to Tucson worthwhile. A fire at the hotel in 1934 led to the arrest of John Dillinger. He was staying there under an assumed name but was recognized from a photograph. All ACJS events take place at the Crown Plaza Phoenix-Chandler Golf Resort (still affectionately referred to as the San Marcos by us old timers), One San Marcos Place, in Downtown Chandler. Cost is $15 for ACJS members; $20 non-members (become a new member on the 15th and get in free; yearly membership $35 couple, single $25). There will be two dance floors and seating with spacing to meet everybody’s wishes, with the choice of table or theater seating. Masks, gloves, Clorox wipes, and hand sanitizer will be available. For more information, go to www.azclassicjazz.org or call 480-620-3941. Also of great interest regarding ACJS’s educational efforts is the fact that Bart Salzman (leader of the once very active Sun Lakes Big Band) is now an ACJS Board member and in charge of school programs. He already has six school programs scheduled. Each program will include 150 - 200 third to fifth graders where they will be introduced to the American art form of traditional music. They will also be taught how to play the Jazz Kazoo and take a Kazoo home with them. Key messages for the students include the uniqueness of jazz as based on improvisation, its origination in New Orleans, and that trumpeter Louis Armstrong was considered the first jazz ambassador who took jazz all over the world. Each hour-long assembly will feature five musicians: Cheryl Thurston (keys), Bart Salzman (trumpet and leader), Steve McCarvel (reeds), Sean Brogan (upright bass), and Jim Banister (drums). ACJS is able to fund these programs through generous donations from the community. If this effort interests you, please call Helen Daley at 480-620-3941.

Loren "Pete" Peterburs
#obit
*We lost another beloved dancer, who will be missed. He was a Merrymaker for many years and faithful at the Towerpoint dances on Monday nights as well as many other dances in Mesa.* Loren "Pete" Peterburs passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 7, 2023. Loren was born on December 25, 1926 in Lismore, Minnesota. He was a farmer, businessman, teacher/professor, and renaissance man. He saw a lot of change in the world during his 96 years on earth: the Great Depression, served in the Army in WWII, married in 1952 to Terese Marie, and had 7 children: Margaret, Peggy, Patti, Scott, Brett, Pamela, and Pandi Sue; four grandchildren: Robinson, Elizabeth, Kara, and Olivia; and one great grandchild: Peter. Loren and Terese Marie met at a dance in early 1952 and danced their entire lives together. On November 18, 2022, they celebrated 70 years of marriage. Loren retired at age 56 and traveled with his best friend and sweetheart Terese Marie for 40 years. During that time they covered tens of thousands of miles with their trailer. They traveled all over the United States several times including driving to Alaska via Canada. They've been all the way up to the arctic circle and deep into Mexico. They've traveled internationally and explored the world together. The family will celebrate his life privately. Condolences can be sent to Terese Peterburs at terese6@... or 8216 E Meseto Av, Mesa, AZ 85209

Moonlight Serenade February 11, Dinner Dance
#dance
#dinner
January’s dance is behind us and February’s ball is looming ahead on February 11. The theme will be Chinese Year of the Rabbit. Please note that you are not required to wear rabbit costumes. Howard Schneider will be our orchestra and he’s one we always look forward to. The entrée choices on February 11, are Prime Rib or Glazed Salmon. Meal is rounded out with strawberry field salad; fingerling potatoes and green beans; sour dough boule bread; carrot cake dessert. Please choose your entrée and let me know no later than February 4, as the caterer has to get his meat order in well before the dance date. Last dance we wound up with no wiggle room on food. The caterer gives us leeway, but that gets used up fast. Don’t miss the meal. Also, please let me know if you have someone you want to sit with and I’ll make it happen if given advance notice. If you are going to invite friends, do it sooner rather than later if you want to sit together. If you are NOT going to attend, that’s also good information so I don’t keep wondering if I’m going to hear from you belatedly; did you get my e-mail or didn’t you, etc. ALSO, if your phone number or address is incorrect in our records, please advise. Members, check your info in the membership booklet. Some of our information is many years old. Guests are welcome at $85 per couple. We love guests, but remind them of our dress code: dressy cocktail dress for the ladies and tux or coats and ties for gentlemen. Again, it’s BYOB with setups provided. As always, your table assignments will await you at the table inside the front door of the dance hall. Any questions please feel free to phone or e-mail. See you soon. Mardi Gras time with ACJS
#jazz
#dance
Ways to help ACJS: attend our monthly events and pay membership dues. MARDI GRAS CELEBRATION Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) falls on February 21st this year. The words “Mardi Gras” or “Carnival” always bring to mind New Orleans, food, parades, beads, partying, music, dancing, costumes, and masks. It started as a pagan celebration of spring and fertility thousands of years ago. Christian leaders determined it was easier to adopt the tradition rather than forbid it. The Mardi Gras season, French for “Fat Tuesday,” officially begins every year on January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany, but its conclusion varies every year because it occurs exactly forty-seven days before Easter, which is the start of the Lenten season and falls on Tuesday, February 21st, this year. Party Hearty or Hardy for several weeks and then repent during Lent. Anyway, that is the theory. In current times, Mardi Gras-style parties are celebrated any time of year. The Arizona Classic Jazz Society will celebrate the fun part of Mardi Gras on Sunday, February 19th, 1 - 4 p.m., in the San Marcos Ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Phoenix-Chandler Golf Resort, One San Marcos Place, Chandler. The Mardi Gras Jazz Band will be led by Cheryl Thurston and jammers are welcome. Beads will be plentiful as will second-line parades and dancing. Mardi Gras has its own colors: purple (justice), green (faith), and gold (power). Masks and costumes are welcome. Cost is $20 per person, paid at the door (cash or check only). For more information go to www.azclassicjazz.org or call 480-620-3941.
