March Moonlight Dance

开云体育

From: Moonlight Serenade <moonlightserenadelw@...>

Final call for reserving your seat at the March 16, Moonlight Serenade last dance of the season.

?

Thank you to all who have responded to my previous requests for reservation information.? If you HAVE gotten a return response from me, you know I’ve received your reservation.? If you’ve NOT gotten a response from me, I didn’t hear from you.? We seem to be having trouble getting emails through.

?

If you have not responded with whether or not you are coming, please do so quickly.? The entrée choices this time are Chicken Piccata or Pork Osso Bucco.? Please choose one.

?

As you were advised at our last dance, our membership dues next year are $305.? That adds $3.75 to each of the 4 dances; hardly enough to cover our costs, but we are trying to keep the costs down.? Guest tickets will be raised to $100/couple.?

?

It would be great if you could bring next year’s dues to this last dance so we can start to work on next year’s budget through the long hot summer.?? Any leg up we get helps us prepare for the season.?

?

And again, thank you so much for the great support you’ve given this year and the enthusiasm you’ve all shown.? We’re looking forward to another successful season in 24/25.

ACJS Mardi Gras, February 11

开云体育

Sent from my T-Mobile Device

?
I've already been chastised for having a jazz event opposite the Super Bowl.? Hey, I booked this first.? Kickoff for the Super Bowl is 4:30 p.m. so you might only miss a few minutes of it - or you can DVR the game and not miss any of it.

Cheryl has booked a group of great musicians: ?Richard Bogen/banjo, Evan Dain/bass, Dan Reed/trumpet, Maureen Roen/drums (sister of Sheila Early), Richard Smith/Clarinet, Greg Varlotta/trombone, and Cheryl on piano.

One of the most exciting things about Mardi Gras as celebrated in New Orleans is the parades.? The second is hearing what is referred to as Traditional New Orleans-style jazz.? The first is much easier to find than the second.

Mardi Gras Day, or Fat Tuesday, is February 13.? The majority of parades take place during the 12 days before Mardi Gras but there are a few beginning on the official start date of the Carnival season, January 6.? They total 79 in all this year.? Many parades feature elaborate floats, the cost of which is paid by the sponsoring Krewe.? A Krewe is a social club that may also hold masked costume balls and support charities. ?

Each Krewe chooses the theme for their float and then contracts with a company to design and build it.? The themes range from satire aimed at current local government officials to racy, musical, educational, fairy tales, etc.? Krewe members purchase their own beads and other items to throw from the floats. ? ? ?

Blaine Kern, known as Mr. Mardi Gras, started designing and building floats in 1947 and passed away in 2020. Blaine Kern Studios now provides floats for theme parks and parades around the world and are responsible for about 80 per cent of the New Orleans floats.? The following year’s Mardi Gras designs start right after the current year’s parades are over.? Artists draw preliminary sketches and the drawings are completed in color.? Then carpenters and other craftsmen take over.? Many previous designs are modified for reuse.? New figurines are now made with styrofoam rather than the plaster of paris of years gone by.? During a visit to Mardi Gras World, we learned things like nobody can leave the floats once the parade has started so each one contains a porta potty.? There are ropes with hooks attached along the inside of the floats and Krewe members hook themselves on to make sure they don’t fall out while throwing beads to the crowds.

Many Carnival attendees wear the Mardi Gras colors of green (faith), gold (power) and purple (justice).

The Arizona Classic Jazz Society will not have a float but will present the music started in New Orleans a century ago.? There will also be many opportunities to march with an umbrella on Sunday, February 11, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., San Tan Ballroom, Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort, One San Marcos Place, Chandler.? The music will be great Traditional jazz provided by Cheryl's Mardi Gras Jazz Band.? Bring your own umbrella or use one of the many decorating the jazz party.? Beads will be provided.? We also have dance floors which many New Orleans jazz clubs don’t offer.? Cost is $20 per person.? Food and drink will be available for purchase in the hotel's bar.? For more information, contact Helen Daley at 480-620-3941 or? ? ? ?

February 10, Moonlight Serenade Dance

开云体育

Our February 10, Moonlight Serenade dance is rapidly approaching and it is time to make your dinner entrée selections.? This information needs to be turned in to our caterer at least 5 days before the event.? So please respond no later than February 3 to assure you have a chair and a meal.? The sooner the better for special seating requests.

?

The main course choices for this dance are Prime Rib or Salmon, each accompanied by fingerling potatoes and green beans, strawberry field salad, and carrot cake.? Please select either Prime Rib or Salmon and advise.? Also, please note dietary restrictions so we can alert the caterer in advance.? ?BYOB.??

?

We will be dancing to the Howard Schneider Orchestra with a theme of Chinese Year of the Dragon.? Expect another gala event with great music.

?

Doors at Rec 2 open at 5:00 (or before) and the music starts at 5:30.? Meals start being delivered to tables about 6:30.? The music ends at 9:30.? Our Southern Gate also locks down at 9:30.? Plan accordingly.??

?

If you make reservations and CANNOT attend, please let us know so we can fill those chairs.? If you cannot come but choose to pick up your meals to go, please also advise.?

?

Guests are welcome at $95/couple.? Invite your friends, but remind guests of our dress code:? gentlemen should arrive with coats and ties and ladies in evening wear.? This will be strictly enforced to maintain the elegance to which you have become accustomed and expect.?

Request to resume the weekly Tuesday 1 to 3 Senior's Social 'Tea Dances'

开云体育

Those of you who would like to see ballroom dancing return to Aster Mesa Downtown, please consider sending an email to sue miller<smuller@...>

Here is a sample: Long before the disruption from the Covid epidemic seniors used to gather weekly to participate at the Mesa south Senior Center for the fun and fitness of ballroom dancing. The attendance dwindled for a variety of reasons:? 'seniors' and younger were never encouraged to come, some of the most avid dancers passed away, no promotion by the management, and choice of the musical presentation.? Please try to return this to our Mesa community.?

Sincerely

Burial for Dee Goodman

开云体育

Since Rick is a veteran and wants to be buried in the?National Cemetery of AZ, Dee as his wife, can be buried there. When he dies, they will put him with her. There will only be a 30-minute get-together on Wednesday Jan 17th at 12:30 with her ashes at the cemetery under a shelter.? As his wife and not the veteran, the cemetery will not have any service for her. Anybody can attend. Mostly family, no program. If anyone wants to send flowers, they can send them to: All Options Funeral Home in Tempe, and they will forward them to Rick. Dee wanted a simple burial. Cards will do. At a later date there will be a dance in her memory at Granite Reef Senior Center, where they were married 6 years ago.

Ckydean "Dee" Ritchey Goodman #obit

开云体育

Many dance communities lost another dancer to pneumonia after a short illness on Jan 7th. Dee loved all kinds of dancing: ballroom, round, square, country western. She danced at many venues including Scottsdale Granite Reef Senior Center (where she & Rick were married almost 6 years ago), Merrymakers and Moonlight Serenade. Dee was also a competitor, having taken 6 first places at a recent competition.

Our condolences go out to Rick.

Arizona Classic Jazz in January

开云体育

ACJS will not be having a jazz party in January but Karen and Dabney Hopkins will be dancing for a program appearing at the Mesa Arts Center on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.? Dan Barrett is the musical director and there may be many faces in the orchestra that you will recognize from festivals.? If you call the Arts Center at 480-644-6500, noon - 5 p.m, Tuesday - Saturday, and give the promotion code LIVEJAZZ, you will receive 30% off the ticket price.? This would make a great Christmas present.

Dan Barrett is their music director so you know it will swing.? Here are quotes about the group:

"Travel back in time with Lizzy & The Triggermen, labeled "10-piece jazz sensations" by LA Weekly and acclaimed as "one of the hottest swing bands in LA" by Good Day LA, burst onto the So Cal music scene with their electrifying performances. Starting in an actual speakeasy LA club, they gained a rapid following due to their exceptional live shows and choreographed showgirl numbers, eventually headlining prestigious venues like the Wiltern, El Rey, and Troubadour. Led by the charismatic siren Lizzy, whose powerhouse vocals and femme fatale swagger bring a modern twist to the classic diva style, the band boasts a multi-generational dream team of musicians who've played with the likes of Wynton Marsalis and Benny Goodman. Their music, deeply rooted in the traditions of Basie and Ellington, is a fusion of various genres, showcasing their audacious and resonant approach in the music scene."

"Dubbed "10-piece jazz sensations" (LA Weekly) and "one of the hottest swing bands in LA" (Good Day LA), Lizzy & the Triggermen is forging a path like no other.?

"Underneath the old school glamour is a captivatingly modern band who is just as at home selling out legendary venues like the Troubadour as topping the jazz charts (#3 iTunes) alongside heavyweights like Miles Davis and Kamasi Washington.??

"Part of Lizzy & the Triggermen’s “time traveling genius” (Music Connection) is their ability to thrillingly marry the old with the new, simultaneously transporting the audience back in time, and forward. Like the great tunes of the 1930s which so inspire them, their music boldly tackles our modern troubles and turns them into killer dance songs that fill the audience with joy the way only a wailing horn section can. As their debut EP succinctly states: they make “Good Songs for Bad Times.”?

"At the helm is Lizzy: a charismatic siren with a searing wit and soaring voice. Her “powerhouse vocals” (Broadway World), forged singing opera, recall the great old divas while still sounding completely unique and new. Her songwriting, which Janis Ian likened to Leonard Cohen, is filled with the same biting humor she used to create TV comedies for HBO, Amazon, Legendary, CBS, and the History Channel, garnering multiple Emmy nominations.?

"But the star power doesn’t stop with Lizzy. It emanates through her entire incredible band, a multi-generational dream team of crushers who have played with everyone from Wynton Marsalis to Benny Goodman.?

While the band is deeply rooted in the sound and swagger of bands like Basie and Ellington, their music is infused with a myriad of unexpected influences: from R&B to Bebop to Broadway to Indie Rock to even Opera. As Lizzy and her musical director, Dan Barrett (who played with and arranged for Benny Goodman), decided from the jump: they weren’t going to pretend like the last 90 years of music hadn’t happened.?

"There is no doubt that what Lizzy & the Triggermen are doing is audaciously against the grain…but it is clearly resonating across an incredibly broad range of audiences.?

"It is a testament to how versatile and visceral their music is that they have not only toured with iconic rock band, Squeeze, to standing ovations and calls for encores, but also have been selected for top festivals (Tucson Jazz Festival, SXSW) and recently co-headlined Modernism Week alongside Samara Joy and Nancy Sinatra."

Hope to see you there and wishing you a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year,

Helen & the ACJS Board of Directors.?
