Re: TTS now Available on SensePlayer Dolphin Easy Reader

Dear Ray

I am not using the smart connect feature yet.
This is partly personal - I am in the midst of preparing to move to Devon from London and I do not want any extensions of frustrations I experienced with Smart connect in version 1 of the firmware.
Hopefully it will be a better experience when I try It again under version 2 in a few weeks.

Thanks David, perfectly clear to me now. It sounds most encouraging.

A second question to you then. How are you getting on using the Sense player to give keypad access to your iPhone? For me this could be another great attraction of the Sense player - and one would hope that keypad support would extend equally to Android phones.

Dear Ray
Tom is nothing to do with eSpeak - he is a Nuance voice, high quality human sounding. It is identical to the higher quality voices available for Jaws for example.

Previous to my installing eSpeak though it was impossible for me to download these high quality Nuance voices from within Dolphin Easy Reader.
The whole add voices section of the app was greyed out and not available.
After installing eSpeak though I found I could access the add voices dialogue and and download tom and indeed other voices from the Dolphin server.
After download these voices were available alongside the eSpeak voices, which is a relief as I am not sure I could have used eSpeak to listen to newspaper content.

Hope that is clearer.

David, I am not clear whether Tom is a varient of the eSpeak TTS. If Tom is another flavour of eSpeak then I really won't contimplate using that sort of speech engine for any sort of extended listening.

Also David, I think I've heard you say that the quality of recordings via Dolphin Easy Reader has left something to be desired, i.e. its not very good. Am I right on that?

All this said, or rather asked, it looks like a step forward to RNIB news content, and on another list some have wondered if local TN news could eventually be playable on the Sense player.

This is a copy of an email sent to another list but I think relevant here.
Last night I discovered that eSpeak was now available on the
SensePlayer app catalogue.
I installed this in the hope that this would add some TTS functionality in
Dolphin Easy Reader.
More importantly for me the installation of eSpeak seemed to unlock
something in the Audio Settings of Easy Reader and I was suddenly,
for the first time, able to download and install Nuance Voices from
within the Easy Reader app itself. Previously this add voices option
in audio settings was greyed out for me and not available on the SensePlayer.
The Easy Reader app cannot access SensePlayer inbuilt TTS to play content.

I cannot pretend the process was smooth but eventually in dolphin
Easy Reader Settings I was able then to change the voice from an
incomprehensible Foreign eSpeak variant to Vocaliser Tom. There seem
to be dozens of eSpeak variants but cursoring through the list of available voices eventually revealed Tom.

I am glad to say that I was able to then read as normal yesterday's
Independent newspaper from the RNIB eText service using Tom with perfect comprehension.
Prior to this pressing the play button only revealed silence.
I then switched to a book downloaded from Project Gutenberg in the
app, and I am glad to report that this, also, was read by the newly installed Tom TTS voice.

I think this is a major development, allowing RNIB eText Newsagent
and Online Project Gutenberg access to a Daisy Player for the first time.
It may be that there has been some background update to the Dolphin
TTS servers and installing eSpeak was not necessary but for whatever
reason I can now access TTS voices to read newspaper and eBook
contents from within Dolphin easy Reader on the SensePlayer.
