Field Day Set-Up
Hi Everyone. This is the final I guess Set-UP & Station Location Plan. I know probably things have changed some, As far as what a certain Station may end up using for an antenna, But try your best to work it all out with each-other. Below will be what the plans were the last that I knew of. Verticals are self explanatory. Mount them as needed. In the past with a 43 foot vertical, we used the park fence as it's radial system. It was quite effective! How do we know it worked well? One year we were having a terrible time making any contacts. CQing got us Nothing. S&P no-body would answer us. It was driving us crazy! The antenna worked Great in past years! 1 call & That's All! Then we discovered that we never connected the ground from the antenna to the fence. Once we did and BOOM! it works. Now of course don't make the same mistake that was made one year. Where multiple verticals all used the fence! This was a DISASTER! I don't know how no-one thought this through! I mean, all verticals, so same polarity, "No Isolation" then only like 10/20 feet apart from each-other! Then the biggest like What were we thinking!? They are all connected to the same ground wire radial system! They are literally electrically I mean dead short connected to each-other! OMG! So Someone with a Vertical, Please use this fence it works great! BUT only one station please! Wire Antennas! We have HUGE Trees! Many over 60 feet tall! USE THEM!!!!! Any wire antenna "Horizontally Polarized" Height above ground is the most important factor of how the antenna performs. That's why we have towers! There have been many Field Days where I have seen a station using one of these all the craze end fed half wave antennas. That's OK. BUT. it was set up like an inverted VEE. Also OK, BUT..... The two ends are like only 3 or 4 feet above the ground. and the center apex is run through the lowest branch of a 60 foot tall tree! It is lucky if it is 10 feet up! Being sooo close to the ground The ground absorption has to be extremely high. In addition what was not absorbed, is primarily radiated straight up! NOT where it is needed. So USE the Trees to their Maximum capability! I won't be at the FD site on Friday. I'll be chasing bonus points on Friday. Again attached is the list of possible bonus points we can earn! Can you do any of them? if so what one(s)? Actually attached is the "Rules" in there is the Bonus points. Anyway. At the next YTARC Club meeting I'll be dropping off with Matthew KD9DZT the Bow, Fiberglass Rod, and shooting line. He will bring them to the FD site on Friday. Anyone here with Archery Experience? I'm far from "Experienced" Yet this set up is extremely accurate! It has never failed me to send the rope exactly where i wanted it to go! I'll give a brief demo on how to use it at the meeting. Please anyone with a wire antenna PLEASE get your antennas as high up as possible! Now this has the shooting line. but it will NOT be the rope to support your antennas. Bring your rope as needed! This line will make the path for "Your" rope to be pulled up and over the tree top. But it is NOT strong enough to support your antenna. Plus won't be enough line anyway. So bring rope for your antennas! Locations and stuff. OK those that plan on setting up south of the park out in the open. Gain access to that area via the property owners driveway (Easy of the FD Site) and path to that open field. as seen here. The rest of you. This is what we had planned a while ago. Again things may have changed so so work together on it. From Right to left, W9PCK a vertical near his station and a wire up over the nearby tree and out across the field to the right for the far end anchor. KB9JMJ,, Vertical so no issues KD9YWQ Dipole stretched between the two trees as seen by the RED line. GOTA Station W9ET (WX4RAY) A vertical no issue, and a G5RV (RED LINE) strung from Tall tree south of station out towards the Road where there is a tall park sign can tie off to. KD9DZT Not sure at this moment what Matthew plans on using. he may surprise us all. he he he NQ9D Vertical no issues. and being

Arrival To FD Site On Friday?
4
I am looking for who will be getting to the Field Day site on the Friday. But also be at the next Yellow Thunder Club meeting. I want to know if anyone will be at both? Reason I want to have my bow system available for use on Friday to shoot ropes over the trees. As most know height is KING on HF. We got some nuce TALL trees, and those using wire antennas should take advantage of them for sure! I can give the stuff to someone at the YTARC Meeting and they can bring it to the FD site on Friday. I'll give a short instruction on how to use it. I won't be able to be at FD site on Friday, I'll be here getting some of the bonus points. So at least we have some of them done. So who will be at the YTARC meeting and Friday FD? Joe WB9SBD

Resources from 2025 ARRL Field Day PR Workshop Wow! What an amazing level of engagement from the ARRL public information volunteer community. You all really showed up for ham radio. We were blown away at how many people participated in the live workshop this week. The response was overwhelming, and we hit a limit we didn*t realize was in place on the Zoom account. Interest in this event was at levels we*ve not before encountered. I know many who had registered were unable to attend live. We are happy to provide you with this recording of the event as well as directly answer any questions you have. We*re going to make sure there is unlimited capacity for the next workshop. Here is the recording, which includes all the slides [YouTube] Here is the 2025 ARRL Field Day Public Relations Kit [PDF] The kit contains everything we went over in the workshop, and all the resources you need to promote your club*s Field Day activation including: Publicity tip sheet Sample media advisory and press release Sample proclamation Fact sheets Social media best practices The 2025 ARRL Field Day landing page contains a lot of useful assets, such as the logo and a publicity poster you can print out and customize for your event. www.arrl.org/FieldDay. Also, the full line of 2025 ARRL Field Day merch is available: www.arrl.org/shop/fieldday. We are excited for this year*s Field Day. The theme of Radio Connects underscores what amateur radio does. It connects us to our local areas and around the world, it connects us between generations, it connects us in person through ham radio clubs, and it connects the next generation of engineering leaders with a real-world application of hands-on STEM activities that will keep them engaged with radio and wireless technology. Radio Connects, and we are delighted to empower you to tell that story in your local community this ARRL Field Day! FD Call(s)
In the spirit of keeping this multi club effort as club neutral as possible, I first proposed W9ET, but Matthew KD9DZT said lets get a special event call! The response to that was overwhelming! So again wanted it as short as possible. In addition it's phonetic doesn't sound like any other letter so no confusion there. So the main call we will use will be N9N, November Nine November. Ray WX4RAY our GOTA station said his call is terrible here in Wisconsin, And asked if it was OK to use the W9ET since it was not going to be used. I had no problem, so the GOTA will use W9ET. Results FT-Challenge!
YES! Not bad for just a 40 Meter Vertical! KA9FOX was the only one that beat me in Wisconsin and 9 Land! So I took 2nd in Wisconsin 2nd in 9 Land 18th in the USA and 30th in the whole world! Fun Contest. Joe WB9SBD

Call...

Whats everyone think of Matthew's suggestion of a one by one call? I Like it! A one-by-one call sign consists of a single prefix letter (K, N, or W), the region number (0 to 9), and a single suffix letter (A to Z, except the letter X). There are 750 such call signs. so we would be something nine something I just digested their database and so far it's pretty open only calls used up so far are. So what do we want to use? I suggest we start with the November prefix N9? Of the N, W, K, "N" has the smallest weight. Next Decision....
2
Hi Y'all, OK, Now we got what Class we will be in for Field Day figured out. Well started, again only two have replied. Please make a decision. Now we need to decide on what call to use. The GOTA Station is simple, He can use his own call or any other that he wants to use. It just has to be a different call from the call the rest of us will be using. The Yellow Thunder Club has of course in the past always used their club call WB9FDZ Whiskey Bravo Nine Field Day Zombies They even had T-Shirts Made up for it! While Funny and Cutezy, Guys that actually tried using it on the air during Field Day, while it was fun, it was a total disaster! Using non standard un-official phonetics like the zombie one Instead of the official ones, Whiskey Bravo nine Fox-trot Delta Zulu, Like 50% of the calls were people asking for repeats! All this repeating consumed up a LOT of time. Often the amount of time used to get the call understood, was so long they could have made one or two more contacts! In addition, I have been trying my hardest to keep this group Field Day as "CLUB" neutral as possible! It's already leaning towards Yellow Thunder because of using their Field Day Site this year. So Using their call is pushing it even further. I don't feel that is fair to the other clubs. We want a call that is neutral to all the clubs. And good for Contesting. What makes a call good for Contesting? Look at these records. These are the winners over several years. What is common of ALL of them? It's the Calls! They are all SHORT! None are longer than 4 digits. Some only 3! There are many reasons for this but the two most important is Speed! And less digits to get across accurately. You have to admit the Call Papa three alfa is must faster to say than Whiskey Bravo nine Fox-trot Delta Zulu. And being only 3 digits long less to get copied. Or copied wrong! I propose we use the DZC Call W9ET. Say this out loud,,, Whiskey Bravo nine Fox-trot Delta Zulu Whiskey nine echo tango. Speed! FDZ has a Call weight of 80 ET is 41 it's roughly half the size! Yes W9ET is a "Club" Call, but not in the usual way. It is a special interest club call. A Contesting Club Call. DZC = "Driftless Zone Contesters" It is a special interest Contest club. it is NOT affiliated with any club. Like Baraboo, Richland Center, Watertown, Mauston etc. BUT there are members of those clubs that ARE members of DZC. DZC has members from about 20 different general interest clubs. From All of Wisconsin, 1/2 of Minnesota, 3/4 of Iowa, 1/2 of Illinois, 1/2 of Michigan. It's FAST on Phone, it's also FAST on CW! So I propose we use W9ET for the call. What do we want to use for the groups name? Don't want Yellow thunder or any other clubs name again. Driftless Area Field Day? Anyone got a good name? Thoughts on Call and name? Joe WB9SBD

Field Day Goals
15
Hello Everyone. I wanna get a feeling of whats everyone's Personal Goals for Field Day are. Not sure if the term "Goals" is the correct term, but Can't think of anything better. What Number best fits your personal wants for Field Day for you. Fractional numbers are also OK, like say you best fit as a 4.5 person. 5- It's a Contest! Make as many contacts as possible a personal or club challenge to rack up QSOs. Try to beat last years efforts. Or try to beat other clubs from all across the country. Yeah yeah the ARRL says it is NOT a contest, (Wink Wink) But if making contacts are worth "Points" and you publish "Results" of who made more points than others, Sorry, IT'S A CONTEST and I'm gonna try my best to make us the highest score possible! Improve personal skills 每 like logging speed, pileup management, antenna setup. Achieve a personal record 每 more QSOs than last year, trying a new mode, etc. Earn points for your club 每 most groups compete for top scores in their class. 4- Shit Hit The Fan! Test emergency communication skills 每 setting up and operating off-grid under simulated emergency conditions. Set up a portable station 每 practicing quick deployment of antennas, radios, power systems (solar, batteries, generators). 3- I've Never Done This Before! Try out different bands and modes 每 HF, VHF, digital, CW, voice, etc. Experiment with new equipment 每 antennas, radios, digital interfaces, logging software. Engage with club members 每 team-building, shared learning, and camaraderie. Elmer new operators 每 helping new or younger hams learn the ropes in a real-world scenario. Troubleshoot in the field 每 identifying weak spots in your setup and learning to fix them under pressure. 4- Hello John Q Public Promote ham radio to the public 每 Field Day often includes demonstrations for non-hams. Even try to get visitors to "GOTA" 5- I'm Here! I'm an extra Body. I will help anyway I can, but no specific duty or thing. I'm Here Just to have fun 每 it's all about the joy of being on the air, outdoors, and doing radio with others. And lastly, to get an idea of Who & When you will be at the site? When do you plan to arrive at the site? You Staying for the duration (Sunday afternoon) All your answers will be kept Confidential. Joe WB9SBD

Forgot For FT-8/4 Folk.....
2
I forgot some hints to make your FT-8/4 rates faster and more successful. Time: Make sure your computer clock is as dead on correct time as possible! Well Sorta...... It changes quickly! Last night at 10PM mine was 10 ms fast. But just now the morning checking it's quite a bit more fast. TOO Fast. I try to be between 50 and 100 ms fast. That may sound counter productive when all the paperwork says you should try to have your time be as close to dead on as possible. They say the further off from dead on the less chances of being decoded happens. And yes that is true. You get too far off from sync with everyone else and you percentage of being decoded drops off a cliff! I see some degradation at +100ms, but barely noticeable, and at +150ms, it seems rates drop like 50% and it gets really bad any higher! Of course all this timing also all depends on what the majority of people on the air what their timings are! If everyone else is running fast, then if you are dead on you end up being slow and that is VERY BAD!!!! Even just 50ms slow and you are lucky to get any answers to your calls at all! So watch the waterfall also. See how peoples signals are spacing with the timing lines? Adjust as needed, so you will be transmitting that 50 to 100 ms early. Now why would I want to do this? If I am on purpose loosing a small percentage of being decoded? It is all on how the software works. This of course mainly only applies to you answering someone's CQ. You CQing this does not apply. The software by default after it finishes CQing listens for callers. If you are the only caller and he hears ya, of course he works ya! But what happens if you end up being one of 20 calling him, and yes that's not uncommon. Who does he end up working if he is running his software in default mode which like 90% of people do. By default he answers to the First station he decoded. Ding Ding Ding Ding see the reason to be just a little faster than everyone else? If you end up being the first he decodes you will be who he calls. That's one way to increase your rate. Next, is a setting in your system. Say you are CQing, and people call you. again One person, no problem, you work him. But if again 20 called, Who do you answer? And remember you got seconds to decide. One thing I do is to activate this feature. Here you have three choices, Last Decoded:, where the last station you decoded is who it will answer. Distance: this one is great for contests that you get more points the further the station is away! And for Field Day or 99% of other contests or even every day to day operation, I use Signal Strength: Choose this and the strongest signal is who you will answer. Being the strongest obviously will help you make the complete contact with as few repeats as possible. How about when you are running S&P Search And Pounce where you are looking for people CQing and calling them. A cycle has ended and you are looking at this! Who do you choose to call? Remember you got like no seconds to waste. especially in FT-4, And you are using FT-4 right!? he he he. But honestly who do you choose to call? Remember first decoded usually wins the contact! Take too long to decide and you will loose being not first decoded. and have to wait for the next Chance to call them, at least then the computer will decide when to call, and hopefully be ahead of everyone else. I ignore That window! I use this one! Many things are happening in this window, First, each cycle this is populated with what it heard. AND In this case it is told to ONLY show me stations CQing! AND To ONLY show me stations I have not worked yet. do not show me any others. Or anyone NOT CQing. AND To sort them in order of signal strength strongest at the top. AND Color Code them. All here are in BLUE because I was using the Field Day parameters. There are no Mults in FD so all the stations are in BLUE. And good to work. But if this was a contest with mults, and say the station F4JRC is a new Mult, F4JRC, would be in RED, and you would click on him first! Simply clicking on his call starts the calling process. So when

FT-8/4 Strategies...
For you FT mode folk, For Field Day, Try to use FT-4 as much as possible. Use FT-4 until you run out of people to contact. Then switch to FT-8. Do FT-8 for like 30 minutes and then try FT-4 again. Reason? Really simple! You can make twice as many contacts for any given amount of time! BUT, BUT, BUT, FT-4 is not as sensitive as FT-8. While this is true, And FT-4 is about 4 db less sensitive than FT-8, and that is HUGE in the VHF/UHF world! Where you have quiet bands, and no interfering stations. 4 db is gigantic! Especially when you have a chance to get anywhere near the max sensitivity of those programs. But On the HF bands with a LOT of band noises, in addition Field Day with the kazillion of competing signals, you are not gonna get anywhere near the program sensitivity spec's anyway. And 4 db? it is not even 1 S unit. it is only 2/3rds of a S unit difference. During Field Day you are NOT gonna see this difference. If ya wanna get some awesome FT contest type of operating practice, every Thursday evening is a 30 minute sprint, that it's sole purpose is to make you a better FT contester! Details can be found here. https://www.ncccsprint.com/ft4ns.html Give it a try, it's kind of fun! Joe WB9SBD

Field Day Stations locations.
3
Evening everyone. I have been working off list with the station owners to see what we can do to make the best layout locations of all the stations. Just finished Today. Everyone, Including the Station Owners, Please go to the web site https://w9et.com And navigate to the Positions Page. I have two tasks for you all. Station Owners and the rest, look how we have the stations laid out at the site. If you think there might be a better layout TELL ME!!!! Now is when we want to make changes if any. NOT on Field Day Weekend!!! The other thing is OK we got Stations, locations, Now we need two more things! More operators other than the stations owners! They can't sit there for more than 24 hours non-stop! We need more Op's And Bonus stuff. Hardly anyone has come forward to say they will do any bonus points. There is a LOT of them! 100 bonus points which is the value for most of the bonus items is the same as making 100 phone contacts!!!! We earn say 3 of the bonus items thats like making 300 contacts!!! Check out the bonus things and see if you can take any of them on! Joe WB9SBD
