开云体育

Game 1 UGH 4 Comets 0 -- Vince Coleman doubled off Ben McDonald to lead off the game, and the Comets did not get another hit until Coleman singled in the top of the ninth. Meanwhile Craig Biggio drove in a couple of runs and Joe Girardi had three hits for UGH, including a double. Lance Johnson drove in a run with a single and also scored a run.?
Game 2 Comets 4 UGH 1-- Ron Darling gave up just one run on five hits in six innings of work for the Comets and turned the game over to the bullpen with a 4-1 lead. Mike Maddux, Rick Aguilera and Jay Howell did not allow in hit in three innings to close it out. The Comets offense came from an Albert Belle solo homer while Milt Thompson was 2 for 5 with a double, an RBI and two RS with Mike Sharperson driving him in both times.??
Game 3 UGH 3 Comets 2 (10 innings) -- Mike Devereaux doubled home pinch-runner Lenny Dykstra to end the game in the 10th to make a winner of Jesse Orosco. It was Devereaux's second RBI of the contest in which the Ghost Hunters had only 5 base hits. Milt Thompson and Ken Caminiti each had two of the Comets six hits. Mark McGwire hit a solo homer for Canton.?

Comets at Snappers

开云体育

Game 1 Snappers 7 Comets 1 -- The Snappers jumped on Dennis Martinez for four runs in the bottom of the first and the route was on. Shane Mack doubled to lead off and Brian Harper moved him to third. Ryne Sandberg tripled home Mack and scored on a Cecil Fielder single before Terry Pendleton capped the inning with a homerun. The Comets had a big opportunity to cut into the lead in the third when they loaded the bases with no outs on a couple of walks and a single but they could only get a sac fly and one run on the board. Cecil Fielder put an exclamation point on the game with a triple in the 8th to drive in a couple of unearned runs. Greg Swindell held the Comets to just four hits while striking out six. He did walk six in going the distance for the win.?
Game 2 Comets 2 Snappers 1 -- Vince Coleman led off the game for the Comets with a single followed by a steal of second. Mariano Duncan laid down a bunt but the play for Coleman at third failed putting runners at the corners. Dave Anderson lofted a fly ball that plated Coleman for one run. A ground out by Mark McGwire moved Duncan to second and he scored on a two-out single by Danny Tartabull. Cecil Fielder led off the bottom of the second with a titanic homerun off Tom Filer to cut the lead in half. Filer went five innings giving up just one more single and a couple of walks to leave with a 2-1 lead. Jim Corsi, Mike Maddux, Rick Aguilera and Jay Howell did the rest allowing just two hits in the last four frames. Bill Gullickson pitched brilliantly allowing just four singles the rest of the way but the Comets held on.?
Game 3 Comets 2 Snappers 0 -- Bill Swift of the Comets and Kevin Tapani of the Snappers matched zeroes through 8 innings but they went about it in far different manners. Swift allowed just 4 hits to the Snappers and walked just one, intentionally, in throwing the shutout. Tapani allowed six hits and two walks and his defense committed two errors through 8 but Tapani did not allow a run. The ninth started with a double by Danny Tartabull. Brian McRae came on as a pinch-runner and scored on a Jerry Browne single. Following an out, Milt Thompson singled to send Browne to second putting him position to score on Don Slaught's single. Swift put the Snappers down in order in the bottom of the ninth.??

End of a Dynasty?

Monday afternoon the Hoboken Zephyrs blew into Springfield for a set with the league-leading Isotopes, a squad many observers had characterized as "virtually unbeatable". After three closely-fought games, however, it was the Zephyrs who emerged with the 2 games to 1 series win, improving their season mark to 6-3. The Topes fell to 11-4.

Game 1 was a back and forth affair. Hoboken's Juan Gonzales and Springfield's Barry Bonds traded home runs early before Ricky Henderson's two-run single in the fourth gave the Zephyrs a 4-1 lead. The Fish scored four in the fifth, though, on Jack Clark's third HR of the season and Pudge LaVallier's two-run double. The Topes still led 5-4 in the ninth but Hoboken threatened, advancing the tying run to third with two outs. The visitors called upon Wally Joyner to deliver the game-tying hit, but pitcher Mike Perez induced a game ending fly out, notching his second save in the process. Pedro Astacio got the win (2-1, 2.86) while Mike Morgan (4.20)? dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

Although the final score may not reflect it, Game 2 was an old fashioned beat down. The 11-2 Fish must have been thinking their 12th was in the bag after Kent Hrbek launched a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give Springfield a 4-1 advantage. That was true for about half an inning, until Hoboken put up a four spot of their own in the top of the second, two of the runs coming on bases-loaded walks, to take the lead right back at 5-4. After four hits and five walks over two innings, Topes' starter Mike Moore hit the showers and was replaced by the equally ineffective Bryan Harvey, who also gave up four runs in his two innings of work, one coming via a bases-loaded walk. Fast forward to the top of the ninth inning, where we can find Springfield's fifth pitcher, Jeff Brantley, walking in another run with the bases loaded. At that point, Hoboken led 11-4, and three meaningless garbage time runs (11-7 final) doesn't change the fact that the Fish suffered their worst defeat of the season. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (4.24) got the W and?improved?to 1-1.

Desperate for a series win, the Fish handed the ball to their ace, Bob Tewksbury, in the rubber match. And Tewks turned in a game-winning performance, allowing just three hits in eight innings of work. Problem #1 - one of the hits was Dutch Daulton's two-run dinger in the fourth. Problem #2 - his opposite number, Pete Smith, was better. Smith was brilliant in his first start of the year, allowing three hits and zero runs in a complete game victory.

Homer Hounds at Comets

开云体育

Game 1 Hounds 3 Comets 1 -- Kevin Appier held the Comets to just 4 hits and the Canton defense committed 3 errors leading to a pair of unearned runs as the Hounds took game 1. Ken Griffey swatted three doubles, drove in a run and scored twice to lead the Homer attack. Albert Belle had two of the Comets' hits.?
Game 2 Hounds 4 Comets 2 -- Cal Eldred shut the Comets down and took a 4-0 lead to the 9th before Greg Gagne's error gave the home team life. Ken Caminiti hit a two-run homer to cut the lead in half and when Jerry Browne singled with one out, the tying run came to the plate. The Comets sent Mark McGwire up to pinch-hit while Duane Ward came out of the pen for the Hounds and shut the door on the comeback. Matt Williams put the Hounds up 1-0 in the second with an RBI triple and scored on a sac fly by Greg Gagne. Williams stroked a two-run single in the top of the 8th to make it 4-0.?
Game 3 Comets 10 Hounds 8 -- The Hounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI double by Ron Gant and it looked like a sweep was in the offing. But the Comets exploded in the bottom of the inning as Lenny Webster tied the game with a single and was aboard when Mark McGwire hit a tape-measure shot to center. Albert Belle and Ken Caminiti hit back-to-back singles and Danny Tartabull hit a three-run homer. The Hounds fought back and Robby Thompson homered to lead off the second to cut into the deficit. In the top of the sixth, still trailing 6-2, the Hounds exploded. Jeff Bagwell doubled home one run and Matt Williams hit a two-out, two-run homer to make it 6-5. Greg Gagne singled and stole second and scored to tie the game on Benito Santiago's single. Santiago came home on a Kirby Puckett double to give the Hounds the lead. Steve Howe relieved Zane Smith who was now in line for a win. Ken Caminiti led off with a single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases. But, Larry Andersen came on in relief of Howe and struck out Mike Bordick and Milt Thompson and induced a pop up from Mike Sharperson to keep the lead. Bagwell gave the Hounds an insurance tally with a homer off Jim Corsi to make the lead 8-6. McGwire hit a solo homer off Andersen in the bottom of the 7th to cut it to a one-run game. Belle bounced a ball up the middle for a hit and Tartabull singled with two-outs to put runners at the corners. Jerry Browne singled home the tying run and was aboard as Bordick greeted reliever Duane Ward with a double into the gap to give the home team a 10-8 lead. Rick Aguilera and Jay Howell pitched clean innings to close out the slugfest and salvage one game from the series.?

Mother's Day Fishing Trip

The Trailers went fishing in the cold waters surrounding the Appalachian Mountains on Mother's Day but, at the end of the day, must have been disappointed in their haul. After reeling in a whopper in Game 1, the Trailers had no luck the rest of the way. The Fish won their fourth consecutive series, two games to one.

The teams exchanged come from behind victories in Games 1 and 2. The Isotopes led the opener 3-1 on the strength of Todd Zeile's second home run of the year, but Reggie Jefferson's pinch hit single narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the sixth. Springfield lifted starting pitcher Jose Guzman to begin the seventh, a decision that did not pay off. With one on and one out, Appalachian's (AP) Ray Lankford ripped a two-run jack off Bryan Hickerson, the blast giving the home team a 4-3 lead. Three Trailer relievers made sure it ended that way.

For the Trailers, Game 2 was definitely the one that got away. They outhit the Topes, 11-6, plus the Fish committed two more errors, a troubling trend to start the season. The Trailers went wild on the bases, swiping five at the expense of Mike LaValliere. Perhaps the home team was too aggressive, though. Not once, but twice, Frank Thomas tried to score from second on a single to left field. And on each occasion, Daryl Boston gunned him out at the plate. Throw in a botched squeeze play (Steve Finley was the culprit), yet somehow the Trailers still led 3-2 entering Springfield's half of the eighth inning. For the second time in the game, Barry Bonds was drilled with a pitch, a not so subtle reminder that the slugging outfielder won't win a popularity contest anytime soon. Jack Clark showed he had his teammate's back, however, by drilling a go-ahead three run home run off of Game 1 winner Darren Holmes. The game ended Springfield 5, Appalachia 4. Bob Tewksbury improved to 3-0 with the improbable win.

At the moment, there is only one other hurler sporting a 3-0 mark in the Tiant Division - Tewks' teammate Curt Schilling. Schilling was dominant in Game 3, allowing just one hit through his first seven innings, and a total of four in his 6-2 complete game victory. Kent Hrbek provided the bulk of his offense, his two doubles plating four. Springfield is sitting pretty atop the Tiant division at 10-2, while the Trailers are at 6-5, surely thinking they should have one more W.

Springfield ace Bob Tewksbury improved to 2-0 on the season in the Topes' 4-2 Game 1 victory. The control artist gave up two runs, four hits and zero walks in eight masterful innings, getting the better of Balldog hurler Chris Bosio (1-1), who allowed three runs in six. Topes' third baseman Todd Zeile collected two hits and plated the game winning RBI. Meanwhile, Dave Winfield cracked his first home run of the year for the Dawgs.

It was probably going to happen at some point, but it still came as a shock to many when the Fish took their first L of the campaign in Game 2.?Randy Johnson threw a five-hit complete game, fanning eight, in Junk's 4-1 win. The Big Unit evened his record at 1-1 and can thank teammates John Olerud and Winfield (again!) for their contributions - each homered to provide all the offense Johnson would require. Pedro Astacio was tagged with the loss.

A first inning miscue by Springfield first baseman Kent Hrbek allowed the Dawgs to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the rubber match (the Fish committed five errors in the series, the Dawgs just one), but the Topes scored the next four runs, two of them on a pinch-hit double by Phil Clark. The Junk clawed back single runs in the seventh and eighth, and only trailed 4-3 heading into the final frame. With one out and the tying run at third and the winning run at second, closer Doug Jones induced a game-ending double-play off the bat of catcher Tom Pagnozzi, and that's all she wrote. Final score Springfield 4, Junk 3.?

Springfield sits atop the Tiant division at 8-1. The Dawgs, meanwhile, are solidly mid-pack at 5-4.
