d-rats gtk-3 progress
3
This weekend I discovered that the conversion of the ddt2.py and transport.py to use bytearrays in the master branch at https://github.com/maurizioandreotti/D-Rats broke a bunch of stuff. PRs have been submitted that fix Chat and file handling. Spent the time testing and fixing that, so did not get anything more ready of GTK-3 code for a published branch. Got a small bit more of the protocol documented. https://github.com/wb8tyw/D-Rats/wiki The GTK-3 code now seems to be working for receiving file transfer requests, and chat conversations. When I get time, I plan to try the message transfers next. Still lots of stuff does not work. * Some toolbars are blank. * Something is wrong with the widget for station list display, it mostly works, but I am getting a failure in the logs for related to it. * Lots of log noise in the GTK-3 version. * File transfer GUI not working the remote section. Need a way to simulate the various servers and devices that d-rats can connect to for testing that code. 73, -John, WB8TYW

Progress in the GTK-3 conversion
5
Some progress on the GTK-3 port. https://github.com/wb8tyw/D-Rats/wiki I have a question, the d-rats client sets up a SimpleXMLRPCServer on port 9100. Does anyone know why this port is used and what happens if a different port is used? I had to set it to use a floating port to allow running more than one d-rats client on the same system at the same time, and am planning on leaving it that way unless a reason can be found to use a fixed port. I am currently planning on using the version 4.0 for the python3 d-rats. I now have the a ratflector and one client running running using GTK-3 and connecting to a client running from the master of the upstream https://github.com/maurizioandreotti/D-Rats I have also been able to connect two d-rats clients through USB serial ports for testing with out needing a two radios. They are passing chat messages, and some of the RPC calls are working. I am going through the menus and trying everything that I can test in that configuration. I am also getting ready to setup a branch that others can access, but not sure when I will have that ready. One of the changes with GTK-3 is that they have deprecated all stock icons. So if someone wants to find or create a set to replace them, that would be helpful. Currently all my GTK3 toolbars items are displaying as blank. I have not had time to look into why they are not displaying the text titles. 73, -WB8TYW, John

Can't seem to reply to an ICS 213 form and have the reply appear in the bottom of the original ICS213. Anybody get this to.work? This is the way it works I'm FLDigi and how the form is designed to work.

Backing up of configuration.

On the raspberry pi, I backup the .config file so if I have to re-install or make a new setup, I do not have to retype everything in. Is there a similar file in Windows I can do the same with? thanks, danny

D_RATS on Pi keep alive
9
I have 2 local hams running a recently released image with D-RATS on it, they are both experiencing disconnect from the rat on what seems to a time setting. The only way to wake it back up is to ping twice then it will connect to the rat and go on till the next "TIME OUT" . We have already reset the wlan0 to not timeout, we have disabled the screen time out in the Pi, I have even tried port forwarding 9000 on one of them thinking that would keep the connection alive. What else is there to cause a timeout? Internet connection is available as normal, so what would cause D-RATS to disconnect? -- AL M KF5SMH

Feature Suggestion For The Similarly Paranoid
I'll look at finding the right place in github to make the suggestion, but I'll mention it here first on the chance that it will raise the discussion with the most effective audience/community. I understand that in an EMCOMM scenario, it of course makes sense that the... Preferences Paths File Transfer Path ...be one and only one directory. An Event HQ station may run with the presumption that any files needed at remote stations would be found in HQ's Shared directory, and furthermore that any remote station which has something to send that HQ and/or other remotes may need, can and should put it in HQ's Shared directory. However... let's be objective - isn't the majority of D-RATS use of a more casual/hobby nature? Sure, it's practice of practical knowledge, skill, equipment and whatnot, but we're also doing this because we enjoy it. It's a hobby. It should be fun. Some of us are leaving our stuff up and running 24x7 simply because we can. Therefore, are we not opening ourselves up to potential danger of M4LW4RE spreading by having our open-to-whomever Shared directory be the same directory for uploads and downloads? Yes, we hams are somewhat more tech savvy than the average bear. But we're not - as a group - infallible. When I tell you that I had a ham radio buddy a while back who just did not get it, and got his computer so infected that I shut off my WiFi before he brought it over to get my help with it, many of you had someone pop into your mind. Didn't you? Here's my point: I would prefer to choose the directory into which I download things. Distinctly, I would prefer to manage what is Shared from my station. (In my case, these would not be the same, except if I were involved in an emcom or organized event situation.) If someone uploaded something bad to my Shared dir, then someone else downloaded that bad thing from my Shared dir, and it caused harm, I would feel really bad about that. I'd much rather have the uploaded-to-me directory be treated as a quarantined, highly suspect, scan-it-thrice directory. I (and only I) will choose which of those things are then Shared with others from my station.

D-Rats Ubuntu 20.04
5
I am using Ubuntu 20.04. I was trying to get the new version running so that we can have wxgps-a information. I keep running into a lot of issues. If I run it on python2 I get the six.url error. If I run it on python3 I get a gtk error. What is the correct way to install and run this? I also have version of 16.04 and 18.04 and the same errors. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Weather
5
We have already experienced the sending of weather information from OpenWeather, our own station, do we have anything to do? Will we cheer up the group with this? Have you ever seen a weather station on D-Star? ... You may think, you don't see the information on D-Rats, but on a modern radio ... More, soon, we will continue to inform ...

D-Rats with Fldigi as backend modem ?
4
Hi everyone, I have connected D-Rats to Fldigi as a backend modem before and it just magically worked, using TCP port 7322 on 127.0.0.1 (start Fldigi first) Is there any interest in adding Fldigi as a menu-option in the D-Rats connection settings? Personally I would love to have this feature, but i'm really bad at GUI programming. Thanks, John KL4YFD

Morning Guys, I've only just discovered D-RATS so please excuse me if this has been asked before......are there any standalone programs to run D-RATS direct on a Mac (not using parallels) or is it solely windows (like Winlink)? 73, Paul 2E0OPV

FW: [d-rats] RF-only D-RATS

Simply connect a D-STAR radio to a serial port on the computer running the D-RATS repeater. In the D-RATS repeater, add a serial device and specify the COM port where the radio is connected. The port speed setting must match the setting in the radio (usually 4800 or 9600). Traffic on the radio will be sent to the network and vice-versa. RF-only D-RATS
8
Hi all, Just found out about D-RATS. I was wondering what it can, and can't, do with RF-only; no internet. Will it do message store-and-forward, file-transfer, chat, and ICS forms if all radios are D-STAR? And multiple connects? Thanks, 73

BPQ32 via Local network or tcp

I am wondering if there is an easy way to get this connected to my linbpq setup. It would be nice to be able to make this work through my repeater and get connected to the packet network.

Minor progress on gtk 3 / Python3.
4
Hello all, As I go along, it seems that I am finding more issues for Python 3 conversions. I locally have the formqui lxml conversion done and it seems to be passing unit tests. I think I have the code for map_sources but do not yet have a way of testing it. The Weather CAP stuff looks like something that may be better off being re-written to use one of the python CAP packages. I do not really have a way to test except on Linux at this time. Autostart d-rats and d-rats repeater on Rpi 4
2
I have been able to install the linux versions of d-rats and the d-rats repeaters on a Rpi 4. I can start each from a command prompt when the RPi has booted to a GUI but not directly from the GUI. And I am unable to make those 2 programs start at boot automatically when running headless and remotely. Any ideas? SFARES uses D-RATS extensively in our Emergency Communications System. Our deepest thanks go to the team that brought D-RATS alive again as a WL2K hotspot. 73 de N4VIP, Don Hinsman -- 73 de N4VIP, Don - SFARES Inc. Treasurer and Secretary

Has anyone had any luck getting D-Rats to run on Mac OS
7
I just started using a new iMac. The computer came with Mac OS Catalina and has since been upgraded to Mac OS 11 Big Sur. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in getting D-Rats to run on a Mac. When I download the Mac specific file from the Files along with the supporting package, I have been unable to get it to work. The machine says it is unable to run the program because it is either corrupt or incomplete. I cannot get the Linux version to compile on the system either. The machine will run DV-Tools, so I can use a DV-dongle with the machine under Mac OS and am able to run D-Rats on it in a Windows 10 virtual machine under Parallels but DV-Tools won't display properly under that software. I was hoping the machine could be used as an upgrade to my old Windows laptop which is slowing down and glitching more and more by the day, but so far no luck.

Install Problem- Windows 10
7
I am hoping this is a simple fix. When I am trying to install any version of d-rats program I am running into this error and the attached debug report. I am somewhat savvy when it comes to computers but when it comes to software issues. I can follow instructions pretty well, so if anyone has any idea what issues I am running into and how to resolve please let me know.

Problem with Errno 111 connection refused after installation of new modem and router from service provider
5
My ratflector is off-line right now after my service provider changed out my modem and router. I re-input the port forwarding for D-rats ports 9000 and 9500, but the program keeps on refusing connections to the ratflector. I can run the client mail and file server and it can connect outbound to all the other ratflectors but it cannot even connect to the ratflector running on the same machine unless I tell it to connect to localhost on 9000. That is the only way I can get it to connect, but that does not help anyone on the outside from using it. The swap was allowing an upgrade to the cable company's new service speeds which allows more bandwidth for all the other stuff the family is running. The new router has a stronger signal, which is good because it is refusing to work with the signal boosters I had in the house too. I have tried to tell the router to place the pi in the DMZ outside the router's firewall, Portforwarded the ports, but nothing has worked to allow the ratflector to talk to the outside world.

Email Reply

When you send actual internet email from D-Rats, it appends the "from" address with "do not reply". I seem to recall (may be wrong) that at one time you could reply to internet email which went back to a VIA station (this is how we use it here), then the "VIA" station saw the callsign in the address, saw if that callsign was active and forwarded via RF if so. That does not appear to be working now (I'm using .39 version). Am I mistaken about it working previously (if so, I have A LOT of detail in a false memory!!). This is a problem for D-Rats if an internet mail user has no way to reply. Thanks.
