Rasberry Pi Serial Port (was: Raspberry PI GURU NEEDED)

Thanks again Ed,

I had a MAX3232 chip and an RPi proto board so i wired up a homebrew interface.?I got the proto board so I could experiment a little with an RPi in at some future date.

I've also got some FTDI USB serial <--> USB cables () - I use them to make serial data CAT, CW ?and PTT cables for radios, but I only had RS-232 and 5V TTL level parts, no 3.3V cables.

Thanks again, I had no idea the IO pins included a serial port until you pointed it out!

Mike,
You are right, the voltage level out of the Pi's UART are 0-3.3V and need to be converted to RS232 levels to be useful.? .? RS232 Level converter kits using the Maxim max3232 chip can be found from a variety of sources, online, search "raspbery pi rs232".?
A ready to go cable assembly can be found on eBay:
I use a .? As you can see there are many ways to skin this cat.
Also the serial port needs to be configured and the user granted permission to use the hardware.? The covers the use of the UART.
