Nick, the DRATS signal is part of the transmission that includes voice.
Any DSTAR (and really any analog repeater) will pass the DSTAR signal. The radio must transmit the CTCSS tone if it’s not a DSTAR repeater. And it won’t sound nice to an analog user.
We’re using DRATS at a common RF mode here in Mid GA. RF ONLY, of the Mid GA Data network.

Fred,
D-Star modules are just a letter and there is no special
"dedication" for a D module on an XLX system. So basically you are
able to use any module you like.
But performance via a XLX repeater is poor at best since there is
no guard against UDP packet loss or packet reordering.
And just keep in mind that if you start doing data transmissions
on an XLX module without asking for permission first, there is a
black list in XLX and you will land in that list exceptionally
fast, either under your own callsign or as your local repeater,
souring the mash for all your fellow hams using that repeater.
Better use either D-Rats reflector or set up your own MMDVM/ircddb
hotspot which actually allows a d-rats data connection to a D-Rats
reflector.
Or, if there is an option available and interest in this, convince
your local D-Star repeater admin to ensure data connectivity to a
D-Rats reflector (if the repeater's "brain" is a ircddb system).
The D-Rats reflector connection uses TCP and provides a much
better user experience.

I have used the laptop to IC-91 for D-RATS via REF030B, but our preferred arrangement is RF direct. … type while you talk, or send a file while you talk.

in advance thank you Do you have the Windows program from Icom for configuring and controlling the Radio? It should have come with the cable from Icom. First get that working. My radio is too old to have a USB cable, but as I understand it, the cable is simply a serial to USB adapter. In your radio manual there should be a schematic for data port on the radio it plugs into. I do not know which USB driver that the cable requires. The software for configuring the radio should have that driver. You can see the com ports in device manager. One should show up when you plug in the USB cable for the Radio. If a com port does not show up, then you are missing the driver. Windows can find some USB serial port drivers on its own, but for others, you need a driver from a trusted source. Beware, that many sites claiming to offer downloads of drivers, software are counterfeit sites and not official sites, and instead of, or in addition to installing software will install malware, so make sure that you get the driver from the software a legitimate source. The setup of the control software should also tell you the baud-rate and other settings that the serial port needs to be set for your radio. D-Rats as installed from distribution knows nothing about radio models. It only knows the serial ports that it can see on the system. You have to add a radio in the configuration and specify which serial port and baud rate to use for the radio. It is also there where you give the radio configuration a name to be displayed for it. Currently d-rats does not know how to query or change the radio settings. It just sends and receives data for frequencies that the radio is currently set to. 73, -John, wb8tyw

in the config window on the left side, select the “radio" item,
My experience is that all ICOM radio are the same interface, using a DRATS USB cable to the radio data port. So the list may not show the “705”, just Icom.
I have used the IC-91, ID-51, and ID-5100 that way with the RTSystems programming cable (orange one).

latest status:? Yesterday, I was able to communicate between the ID51a Plus2 to my IC92ad using our dstar repeater.? Then I went back to using a simplex channel and the communication only went one way.? I shut everything down, the two laptops and the two radios.
I come back this morning and everything works perfect.? I cannot explain it.? It gets back to if one believes the settings are OK, either rebooting the laptop or restarting the DRATS program seems to fix things.? Obviously restarting DRATS only takes a few seconds.
The version of DRATS I'm using on both ends is 0.3.9. I'm not doing maps or email at this time. I understand that most of the new development has to do with mail or maps, therefore, should I stick with this version?

Just to make the water more muddy, I'm chatting on drats with a couple people over the local dstar repeater and it's WORKING. I've also moved cables around, too many variables.
I should probably go back and see if simplex works, I belong in the nut house, better be careful with what I say

When other drats stations send a text message, the 51 the message does not make it to drats.? The 51 is receiving, it's s meter pegs and there is a message on the radio screen from the calling station.
I've been through the 51's radio settings and don't see anything suspecious.?? I had a similiar problem a while back while setting up the 92ad.? I didn't know the baud rate absolutely had to be 38.5kb.? I was using 9600 and actually got some garbage on the screen, I said ah ha, that happens with the wrong baud rate.? I checked the specs and changed to 38.5 and it worked perfectly.
The problem is as if the comms between the radio and the laptop is the problem.? The laptop runs win7, using a usb to rs-232 converter, common control chip, proper drivers.? I've used different cables which worked elsewhere.
I wish I knew somebody else who had the same radio, or even had a RT Systems data file for this model I could try.
