Re: The process of setting up a Ratflector, help.

Well it would seem my issues have to do with IP addresses now.?
I'm working through them and getting closer to success. The struggle doesn't bother me because he helps me understand the processes involved.
Thanks for everyones guidence on here.

fldigi news

A new version of fldigi was released on December 25th, followed hours later by a bug fix. That prompted me to some more experimenting with D-RATS and fldigi. I already have D-RATS and fldigi set up on my desktop computer. (Add a network connection to D-RATS and set the address to 127.0.0.1, port 7322.) I set up a laptop computer with the same arrangement. I used two audio cables to cross-connect the line-in and line-out on the two computers. I selected BPSK250 as the modem in fldigi on both computers (this is about the same speed as 300 baud packet). I was able to send D-RATS text and messages between the two computers using fldigi as the transport medium. I have not, as yet, tried this on radios, but I am confident that I will, in the future, have it working. After I reached that point, I reasoned that the D-RATS repeater could also make a network connection to fldigi. Well, it works. I was able to make messages coming into a ratflector be re-transmitted by fldigi.

Did I mention I have a TNC running on a Ratflector too? I recently acquired a MFJ1270X, which is MFJ's version of the TNC-X. It's virtually plug and play. If you order the optional cable, it plugs into packet ready radios. There is only a transmit level control to adjust in the TNC. Mine is the USB version and it was recognized as a serial port device. Go to D-RATS preferences and add a connection to a KISS TNC. Plug in the COM port number and set the speed to 9600. Set the speed jumper in the TNC to match. This is where it gets complicated... There is a bug in the D-RATS software that puts the wrong data in the config file when connecting a TNC. You must manually edit the file to correct it. It is a hidden file, so you must first instruct you computer to show hidden files. Now search for d-rats.config for D-RATS, or repeater.config, for the repeater. Open it with a text editor. Look for a line like this:
True,<type 'type'>:COM3:0,9600,False,False,TNC
Delete the?<type 'type'> and insert tnc, like this:
True,tnc:COM3:0,9600,True,False,TNC
Save the file and re-start D-RATS.
I hope this will encourage D-RATS users to try it on radios, as it was intended.

Re: The process of setting up a Ratflector, help.

I haven't set up a radio with the Ratflector before, but looking at the settings it appears to be exactly the same as in D-RATS.

Re: The process of setting up a Ratflector, help.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone.
Some of the posts promp more questions.
I see that when I installed D-rats it installed the repeater program. Didn't know after using using D-rats for years even what that was. Big Duh on my part.

First question is to Mike n0so. How did you get a HTTP address for your ratflector? I'm familiar with setting up websites and I use CoreFTP to work on them.

Second question is to Chris ku7pdx. You said internet only. To add a radio, is setting up a radio in the repeater exe. the same as setting up a radio in the D-rats communications tool exe. ??

Re: The process of setting up a Ratflector, help.

Setting up a "Ratflector" can be easy or hard, depending on your situation. Run the D-RATS Repeater application that is included with the software download. The minimum you need to do is click the ON button. Now give the IP address to users so they may make a connection to your Ratflector. If the computer is behind a router, you may have to forward the port to the computer running the repeater application. You should also set up an instance of the D-RATS client on the same computer as the repeater. Give it the callsign of KC2ELG. Delete any existing connections in Preferences>Radio. Add a new network connection with the IP address of 127.0.0.1. Check the "Trust Local Host" box in the repeater application. This will now act as a file server and mail drop. If you have access to antennas where the Ratflector will be housed, consider connecting radios to your Ratflector. A D-STAR radio and a KISS TNC will easily connect to a D-RATS repeater.

Also check out the Skywarn reporting form in the files section of this group. Download and import it in to the D-RATS message function.

Re: The process of setting up a Ratflector, help.

Dear Keith and Chris,

Chris's recommendation is correct and a good one.? However, if you want to go one step further, you can also check "trust localhost" on the ratflector, start up an instance of d-rats on the same machine as your ratflector, name the d-rats instance as your ratflector name plus add "-R", and add a radio in preferences to localhost.? Then anyone connecting to your ratflector will also see in the Stations Panel your instance of D-RATS (name would be W5MPZ-R for example).? Anyone could then connect to your instance of d-rats-R, and upload and download files.? SFARES does this to store all our resource files.? This is another valuable use of d-rats.

Hi Keith,

Looking at?, if you want to run an internet-only Ratflector it is as basic as running the?d-rats_repeater.exe server, check the "Accept incoming connections" box and entering a port number.

After you've done that, it is a matter of directing users to connect to this over the internet and unfortunately this is the most variable part of it. Depending on your internet configuration, routers, firewalls and etc, this could be simple or very complicated.

If your server has a dedicated IP address and you use port 9000, you would just give this IP address and port to users.

Hello Keith,

?

Have a look here:

?

There is also a PDF document in the files section of this group that has a few more details:

If that doesn’t help then e-mail me and I’ll do my best to help get you started.

FYI: d-rats_repeater runs very well on some of the small, single board computers that run Linux such as a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone.

The RSS and CAP feeds seem to be hit or miss. The feeds from the National Weather Service don't always work. This one seems to work every time:

I'm guessing it has to do with the way they are formatted.

Re: Has anyone come up with a way to send forms via winlink?

Mike

The only way I have been able to send NTS message via Winlink is to use OUTPOST. There's a check that enables you to send NTS message as a private message. There are NTS Target station on HF. I've been able to forward NTS using BPQ32 software from my BPq32 Mail forwarding to NTS Target station.

Hope this doesn't confuse you.

Re: Com Port issue

Hello All,

I may be all wet, but I suspect that what is the problem is a Windows 7 setting in the Sounds
setting section of the Control Panel. Or possibly, a setting in the sounds section of D-RATS.

Just my ha-penny.

Com Port issue

We just had a comport issue with a drats install on a win 7 service pack 1.The comport appeared to be installed correctly in both drats and the device manager, every time we opened drats the comport opened and closed and was audible from the computer. We tried every trick we could think of, updating and re installing drivers, changing USB ports, all of the normal com port driver tricks. All to no avail, drats would on occasion transmit the log on call but not every time drats was started. The final fix was a clean uninstall of drats and a new install of the daily build 02232012. Since then the machine runs just fine, again the comport opening and dropping back out was audible like plugging in a USB cable to a port. I hope this helps someone else as it is a annoying problem to encounter.

Mike,

This is an excellent find. ?I will give you credit for that. Since I run Linux, it is good to know that they work on Linux.

I have an IC-706 and an ID-880 in my truck. ?I have been thinking about adding a computer so I would have access to NBEMS and D-RATS in the truck. These cables are just the ticket to do that. ?I also plan to replace the really old USB to serial adapters that I have been using on everything else. ?

I have a Raspberry Pi that I use with my DVAP. ?I would like to be able to set up a ratflector on that as well. ?Perhaps you could provide some insight as to how you set yours up.

Thanks

Hi David,

I'm happy you found it useful.?

The cables are not shielded, but I've never had an RFI problem using them. A few ferrite snap-on beads might not be a bad idea as prevention, though.

I've used these cables as D-STAR rig data/programming cables and as rig control cables for the Yeasu FT-450s HF rigs our EOC has in our GO boxes.?

You can also get TTL level output versions, both 5V and 3.3V level. I've used the 5V TTL level version for ICOM CIV rig control of IC-706, IC-7000, IC-756Pro and IC-7100 rigs. For CIV use the 5V TTL output version of the cable instead of the RS-232 level and short the TX/RX wires together, then install the appropriate mating connector.

I'm using a 3.3V TTL output version to talk to the serial port of the Raspberry Pi that's running the N0SO Ratflector.

The cables work well with Linux and Windows, I've not tried them with a Mac.

I'd like to claim this idea as my own, but it's not. I started using these cables at the suggestion of a young man that I talked to at the ICOM D-RATS booth in Dayton a couple of years back. I don't ?remember his name or call to give credit where it's due.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, these FTDI USB to RS-232 "wire end" cables work well:

The cable is a USB plug / converter at one end and "bare wires" at the other end. You will need to solder on a connector that fits your rig, in most cases a 2.5mm stereo plug (that's where the soldering iron come in). Connect the Orange wire to the tip, the yellow wire to the middle sleeve and the black wire to the base. You don't need to connect the other wires.

Pick your 2.5mm plug carefully, most of the ICOM rigs require a pretty narrow backshell on the plug. I've been known to leave the plug off and just cover the connections with heat shrink tubing.

The cables are about $23 from Mouser Electronics. They work well, I've made several.

The cable from RT systems that John suggested also works well. It may cost a little more, but no soldering would be required.
