Re: CPK-3 SMD pre-assembled

The trick to mounting a SMT IC like that is to tack solder one of the pins when wiggling it into place.? Once it's straight on the board, you want to tack a second pin.? Ugly is fine.? Then generously apply liquid flux (this is critical) at all pins.? Then from the opposite side of the tacks flow a ball of solder down the chip.? Do the same for the other side of the chip, redoing the tacks.? If you bridge pins when rolling the ball of solder down the pins, then go back and pull the solder outwards from the chip.? If that still doesn't work, more liquid flux and solder wick will fix that.

It's actually pretty easy.? Probably easier than soldering a DIP IC once you have done one. Clean of the flux with Naptha (Zippo lighter fluid) or similar after soldering.?

The other way is to use paste solder, a stencil and hot air.? If done correctly that works great too.? But this isn't hand soldering.?

I encourage everyone to learn how to do this.? Liquid flux, my good people.? It's your friend when doing SMT work!?

If you can't focus anymore like me at almost 55 close in, then also get a microscope with a screen on it.? Verify that the chip is on straight before rolling the solder ball down both sides.? ?Inspect when you are done. It'll look like a wave machine did it if you follow these instructions.?

CPK-3 SMD pre-assembled

Guys,

During the holiday, I have prepared some CPK-3 KT Receiver kits with SMD part pre-assembled. For those who are reluctant to solder SMD parts, you can consider this kit at 16 USD (14.5 USD + 1.5 USD) each including tracked air shipping. You can directly PayPal to rongxh@... and leave your ship-to address.

Thanks,

Adam

Tim,

Good luck. Take care not to short the 5V to GND as the on board 5V regulator does not have the short circuit protection. Don’t touch any of the pins of Arduino. Build along the modified parts.

Adam

Ok, like to know how the 5v regulator isn't working, followed the assembly manual to the letter, so guess I'll have to see if can unsolder nano, or use the 5v regulator like the link showed, but not sure on how it works, only connection was ground and 12v, showed nothing else.

It looks like your 5V regulator is damaged, but 3.3V regulator is okay. With 12V on C1, can you still see LED is lit on the Arduino Nano module?

You should be able to proceed with the building still, but you only can power the radio with USB port now. The RF output will be limited to a few hundreds of mW.

The fix is to replace the module, or you can try to add an external regulator like this blog if it applies to your situation.

Hi Jason,

The drift is caused by heating by the finals. To reduce the drift:

Warm up for 2-3 minutes.
Make sure the antenna is a good match.
Lower the power supply voltage a bit.
Lower band has lower drift.
Drift does not always mean poor decoding.
If you have access to a TCXO of 25MHz, try to modify the 5351 module.
